In March 2009 construction started on the newest addition to the London skyline, in the months and years since then it has begun to draw attention to itself, because this is no ordinary building. In May 2012 when it will be completed2009年3月、ロンドンの新しいスカイラインの建設が始まった。このビル、「ザ・シャード」は、特殊な形状の建物のため、建設が始まって以来ずっと注目されてきた。2012年5月310メートル（1016フィート）に達し、西ヨーロッパでは最大の建物となる。比較すると、333メートル（1092フィート）の東京タワーとの差は23メートル、英国内の現在最も高いビル、「カナリー・ワーフ」とも呼ばれるワン・カナダ・スクエアでも235メートル（770フィート）の高さだ。ザ・シャードはその高さからだけでなく、ロンドンではあまり見ることのできないクリスタルラインの外観からも注目を集めているのだ。伝統的にロンドンのスカイラインは低い建物が多かったこともあり、シャードの建設は優れたデザインの高層ビルの大胆で新しい時代を示している。隣国からの旅行者を、この高いビルの立つ新しい風景がお出迎えしてくれる。
このビルのデザインは、オフィススペースとレストラン、ホテル、住居スペースと展望デッキを組み込み、ユニークな造りとなっている。展望デッキの４階はロンドンの半径40マイルの景色を360度見渡すことができる。晴れた日には海岸まで見ることができる。2013年2月にオープン予定となっており、ロンドンの街を広く見渡すことができる。現在ウェブサイトでチケットの発売を知らせてもらうための登録が可能。次に高いエリアは誰もが夢見るような素晴らしい眺めの住居スぺースとなる。34階と52階には英国初のシャングリラホテルがオープン予定で、この５つ星ホテルには、200の素晴らしい眺めの豪華な客室と、スパやビジネス設備も整えてゲストを迎える。続く３つのフロアにはたくさんのレストランがオープンし、ロンドンのスカイラインからの眺めを堪能しながらディナーを楽しむことができる。レストランのフロアはグラスアトリウムとなっているので、窓際の席を予約することも難しくはない。１階はオフィスフロアとなり、人々はいつもこの素敵なビルに刺激を受けながら働くことができる。
このビルはイタリアを代表する建築家レンゾ・ピアノが「何千もの人々が、働き、楽しむバーチャルシティー」をイメージしてデザインしたものだ。ザ・シャードはこのイメージを簡単に現実にしてしまいそうだ。まだ完成していないときから外観を写真に撮る人が多かったので、一度オープンすれば、仕事をしたり、食事をしたり、景色を見るために展望デッキに上ったりと多くの人が集まるだろう。シャードは、ロンドン・ブリッジ駅からほど近い場所にあるため、電車や地下鉄からのアクセスもよく、ロンドンの中心にあるノーススターの様に、迷うことのないミーティングポイントになるだろう。さらに、10～15分歩けばロンドンタワーや、有名な美術館、テート・モダンにも行くことができる。建物の美しさだけでなく、95パーセントはリサイクルの材料を使用していることも特徴だ。鋼鉄部品の20パーセントはリサイクル素材、またトリプルスキン構造の外壁によって、自然光を最大限に生かせる造りとなっている。

Translation: Satsuki Miyanishi it will have reached 310m (1,016 ft), the tallest building in Western Europe. In comparison Tokyo Tower is 332.5m (1,091 ft) tall, a difference of only 22.5m and the current tallest (completed) building in the UK is One Canada Square, commonly called Canary Wharf, which is 235m (770 ft) tall. However, The Shard not only stands out because of its height, but also because it’s crystalline façade represents a whole new architectural style not commonly seen around London. Traditionally the London skyline has been a plethora of low buildings, with this in mind, The shard heralds a bold new era of tall buildings of exceptional design. Anyone travelling into London from the east or the south of the country is greeted, upon approach to the city, by the sight of a brilliant new building that rises above its neighbours.
The design of this building incorporates a unique mix of office space, restaurants, a hotel, residential space and on the highest floors an observatory deck. The four floors of the observatory desk will allow a 360° view of London for a radius of 40 miles; on a clear day it should even be possible to see the coast. It is anticipated to open in February 2013 and will almost certainly be one of the most sought after city views in London. It is possible to register on the website now to receive a notification for when tickets will go on sale. The next highest floors will offer up residential space, which considering the views and location will no doubt be a hot commodity and provide the most spectacular views any occupant could dream of. Floors 34 to 52 will welcome the first Shangri-La hotel to be opened in the UK, this five star hotel will offer up its visitors 200 luxurious rooms with breath taking views, and will include a spa and business facilities. The following three floors will allow everyone to enjoy dinner in one of a number of restaurants while feasting their eyes upon the sights offered by London’s skyline. It isn’t hard to imagine that booking will be required in advance to gain a table by the window. The restaurant floors will also feature a glass atrium. The lowest floors will be open to companies to make their office, considering the amazing building the employees will work in it is to be expected they will be very inspired by their surroundings.
The building was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano who said that he imagined ‘a vertical city, for thousands of people to work in and enjoy,’ and looking at the possibilities that The Shard presents it is easy to agree with him. Once it is open for business people will flock to it, not just to take great pictures from the outside, even though it isn’t finished yet already many people can be seen around the base taking photos, but to turn it into a home, a place to eat, work, or just go to the top and take in the views. It will almost certainly become a meeting point for many people as it is hard to get lost with such a North Star being located at such a central point of London, and it also benefits from being so close to London Bridge station will gives convenient access to trains and the tube. Furthermore, within a 10 to 15 minute walk it is possible to reach a long list of destinations including the Tower of London and the Tate Modern. As well as being a beautiful building, The Shard also represents the best of the modern age by being able to boast of 95% of its construction materials recycled, 20% of all steelwork being from recycled sources and a triple skin intelligent façade allowing maximum use of natural light.
As mentioned The Shard is due to be completed in May 2012, though it can now be seen for miles around and is already garnering attention. In fact it has had a dedicated band of followers from the beginning who have maintained a photographic diary of the gradual rising of the building since 2009. However, the excitement that anticipates the opening of The Shard is palpable and the coming months leading right up to the expected sale of observatory tickets will be a tense waiting period.
