Study O Portable is a London-based collaboration between husband and wife duo Bernadette Deddens and Tetsuo Mukai, since 2009. Every product created has a sense of innovation paired with a completely new re-interpretation2009年からロンドンを拠点に活動するスタディ・オー・ポータブルは、ベルナデッタ・デデンスとムカイ・テツオからなる夫婦ユニット。どの作品にも革新的な手法と、全く新しい解釈を組み合わせ、それを持つ人に創造的な表現を示すよう意図し作られている。
ファッションとプロダクトデザインという経歴を持つ彼らは、お互いの関心が似ていることと、補足し合えるスキルを発見し、これらを組み合わせることによって他にはない特質を持ったコラボレーション作品を生み出している。
不思議な雰囲気を持つ倉庫のスペースに位置しているスタディ・オー・ポータブルの作業場は、ロンドン北部のストークニューイントンの美しい裏通りにある。ここは、多くの実験性と革新を取り入れた様々な分野に渡るデザインを手掛ける彼らの制作の拠点となっている。
スタディ・オー・ポータブルについて教えて下さい。
スタディ・オー・ポータブルはデザインプロジェクトとして2009年に始まりました。移り変わる自然における物体に対する関心をもとに、デザインされた環境とそれを可能にする文化的な領域における関係性を表現する作品を制作しています。作品は多様性に富んでいて、時には全く異なる作風の作品もあります。その概念は確かにアイディアと目的に結びついており、平凡さや普通さに対して別の可能性に提案をしています。一般的に関わりのある物やことの違った考えをめぐらせ、デザインの定義に思索的なアプローチを続けるという手法を使います。ロンドンに拠点を置いていますが、別の場所、ロンドンの外でも多くの仕事をしています。
最近のスタディ・オー・ポータブルの作品について教えて下さい。
現在はジュエリープロジェクトや、作品は以前の私たちのものと同じ技術を用いたサイドテーブルを制作しています。加えて「クウォーツ・ミラー」から発展した「ファズ」という作品にも取り組んでいます。
ロンドンには、現在までどれくらい住んでいますか？
ベルナデッタは８年、テツオは５年です。
お二人とも東ロンドンのストークニューイントンにある美しい倉庫のスタジオで働いていて、多くのデザイナーやクリエイターに囲まれていますね。東ロンドンはそのような創造性にどう作用していると思いますか？
この街にいる私たちの友人でもある他のデザイナーと共に過ごすのは、生活し働く環境としてベストだと思います。街の中でもこのエリアは特に。仕事に関係する事以外にも、みんなが何をしているか、何を話しているのか見るのは、とても刺激になります。全てのことが生活や仕事に関係してくると思います。
あなた方にとっての、ロンドンの完璧な一日の過ごし方を教えて下さい。
私たちは街への長い道のりを歩くことが好きです。川を渡ってテート・モダンへ行ったり、ほぼ誰もいない週末の街を歩きます。そこには隠れた古い小道や公園、面白い道の名前を見つけることができます。この場所が2000年間も存在しているというのはとても素敵なことで、あらゆる時代のものを見るのはとても面白いです。
あなた方の大好きな秘密の場所を教えて下さい。
それほど秘密ではないのですが、ロンドンのあちこちにある古いパブを満喫しています。その中のいくつかは古すぎて、いつからあるかも分からない程です！「オールド・マイター」もその一つで、エール（ビールの一種）や、簡単にトーストしたチーズサンドウィッチを出してくれます。

Coming from fashion and product design backgrounds, the duo discovered their similar interests and complementary skills, and decided to combine these to produce a collaborative genius unlike no other.
Located in an enigmatic warehouse space, the Study O Portable workspace is perfectly nestled in a leafy abundance in the beautiful backstreets of North London’s Stoke Newington. A hub for many multidisciplinary creatives where experimentation and innovation is aplenty.
What is Study O Portable?
Study O Portable is a designing practice, we started in 2009. We make objects about the designed environment and our relationship to the cultural landscape that enables it, with a particular interest in the transitional nature of our ideas towards objects. The work often catalogues various, and sometimes disparate, notions associated with certain ideas and objects, and proposes other potential for the mundane and ordinary. The practice maintains a speculative approach to the definition of designing, and is intrigued by different modes of thinking relating to things and objects in general.
We are based in London but present our work in different places, more often outside London.
Please tell us what you are currently working on at Study O Portable.
We are working on a jewellery project, a side table using the same technique as our previous work, Additionally, we are working together again with Fuzz on a progression of Quartz Mirror.
How long have you now been living in London?
Bernadette has been in London for 8 years and Tetsuo for 5 years.
Tetsuo and Bernadette, you both work in a beautiful warehouse studio in East London’s Stoke Newington, surrounded by many designers and creatives. How do you think East London inspires such creativity?
Being able to hang out with other designers, who are also our friends in this city, this is the best thing about living and working here and especially this area of the city.
It’s always nice to see what people are up to and talk about things, not just work related but anything else that might feed the work and the life in the city.
Please run us through a perfect day in London for you.
We like to take long walks down to the city, maybe cross the river and go to Tate Modern, and walk through the City during the weekend when there’s hardly anyone around. You always discover old hidden alleys, parks, interesting street names. It is nice to know this place has been inhabited for about 2000 years, and it’s interesting to see different remains various eras in the city.
Do you have a favourite hidden place you’d like to share with us?
Not so hidden, but we quite enjoy old pubs around London. Some pubs here are so old then don’t know how old they are! Ye Olde Mitre Tavern is such a place, they serve nice ales and simple toasted cheese sandwiches.
