The White Cube galleries have been increasing in number since the 1990s, owned by Jay Jopling, the concept is to have an intimate space where artists can show1990年代にジョイ・ジョプリンによってオープンしたホワイト・キューブ・ギャラリーは徐々にその数を増やしてきた。そのコンセプトは、アーティストが重要なアート作品や一貫したシリーズ作品を展示できる落ち着いた空間だ。このギャラリーには、アーティストは一度しか展覧会を開催できないという特徴的なルールがあり、多くの新人や新進気鋭のアーティストにオープンな環境となっている。
ホワイト・キューブは現在、メイソンズヤードとバーモンジーの２カ所があるロンドンの他、香港、サンパウロにギャラリーを構える。2011年にオープンしたホワイト・キューブ・バーモンジーは、展示スペース、プライベート閲覧室、講堂、書店を含む、約5,300m2以上の広さがある。1970年代には倉庫だったこの建物は、今ではヨーロッパで最大の商業ギャラリーの一つとなっている。
ギャラリーはロンドンブリッジ駅とロンドンの街にそびえ立つビル、シャードからもそう遠くはないところに位置し、モダンな建物が中へと誘う。驚くほど大きいが、見た目よりは重くないドアから中に入るとレセプションが出迎えてくれ、その先にはギャラリーの中心を通る広く、白い、廊下が続いている。
廊下は一見ドアなどが一切なく、出口までまっすぐ続いているように見えるが、壁に沿って歩き始めると書店の入り口や、様々な展示スペースが現れ、廊下の終わりには講堂が直結している。ここは確かに訪問者が本当にアートの展示を楽しむことができる静かなスペースが多くある、よくデザインされた建物だ。違った種類の展示スペースがあることで、絵画、彫刻、パフォーマンスに至るまで様々な種類のアート作品を展示することができる。
展覧会は４〜７週間程の期間で開催されている。品揃えの良い書店の他、アーティストによる映画作品や、長編映画の上映、講演を行うのに最適な60席の講堂がある。ここはロンドンの中でもよりモダンで、アートの喜びを与えてくれる非常におすすめできるギャラリーの１つだ。

Translation: Satsuki Miyanishi a single important work of art or a coherent body of work within a focused environment. A striking aspect of these galleries was the rule that an artist could only exhibit once, thus opening the doors to many new and upcoming artists.
Currently White Cube galleries can be found in Hong Kong, São Paolo and two locations in London; Mason’s Yard and Bermondsey. White Cube Bermondsey opened in 2011 and is the largest with more than 58,000 sq ft of space that includes exhibition spaces, private viewing rooms, an auditorium and a bookshop. This building which was once a warehouse in the 1970s has now become one of the largest commercial galleries in Europe.
It is located on a street not far from London Bridge Station and the latest building to dominate the London skyline, the Shard, and presents a modernistic building which literally invites you to walk in. After entering through the surprisingly large, yet light, doors you can find a reception counter and directly in front of you a wide, white, corridor that forms the centre of this gallery.
The corridor deceptively appears straight with no doors or exits, but as you walk along openings in the wall become apparent such as an entrance to the bookshop and to the various exhibition spaces. The end of the corridor leads directly to the auditorium. It is a very well designed building which certainly succeeds in giving the appearance of having lots of quiet space in order for visitors to truly enjoy the art on the walls. There are several different kinds of exhibition space which allow different kinds of art to be shown, such as paintings, sculptures and even performance art.
Entry into the gallery is free and exhibitions tend to last around four to seven weeks, it has a very well stocked bookshop as well as a 60 seat auditorium which is well suited for showing artists films, feature films and lectures. It is one of the more modern, and delightful, galleries in London and is highly recommendable.
