In September 2016 a new gallery opened in London with a difference, it is the first commercial space dedicated to non-academic and private art-making. Another unique aspect is that all proceeds from sales are used to support the Museum of Everything – an organisation which celebrates the work of artists who are outside the cultural mainstream. 2016年9月、ロンドンに新しいギャラリーがオープンした。ここは美術教育を受けていない一般のプライベートアート作品に特化した初の商業施設だ。またそのユニークな側面は、売上のすべてがアウトサイダー、つまり主な文化的な流れの外にいるアーティストの作品を後押しする組織である「ミュージアム・オブ・エブリシング」をサポートするために使用されることだ。
ギャラリーは、ベイカーストリート駅とボンドストリート駅からほど近い、赤レンガの建物が並ぶ狭くて美しい通りに位置する。小規模で、古いスタイルの佇まいのギャラリー自体は目立たず、ロンドン中心部の多くのアートギャラリーが好むような近代的なガラス窓で飾られた外観とは全く異なっている。アウトサイダーのためのスペースとして自らを支えているこのスペースは、そこから外部へ向けたはっきりとした意図が垣間見えることは明らかだ。他のアートギャラリーとは全く別のギャラリーなのだ。
中へ足を踏み入れると、暖炉やこれまでの歴史の跡が刻まれた床、建物の特徴が多く残されているのがわかる。展示スペースは非常に小さく、歩いて見て回るのに時間はかからないが、アートを展示する壁のスペースは十分だ。こういったギャラリーでは、展示された作品を１つ１つゆっくりと鑑賞するのがいい。ここで見ることができる作品は決して他で見ることができないものなのだから。
ロンドンを歩いている人が、たまたま見つけたとしたら、ここは素晴らしい小さな宝石のような場所かもしれない。でもアート、特にアウトサイダーアートにに関心のある人にとっては、絶対に見逃せない場所だ。ロンドン中心部の閑静な場所にあるベイカーストリートとボンドストリートから徒歩約10分のところにあり、ウィンドウショッピングを楽しんだり、この小さなギャラリーにも出会えるチルターンストリートはとても興味深い場所だ。

Translation: Satsuki MiyanishiThe gallery is located not far from both Baker Street and Bond Street stations, on a beautiful narrow street lined with red brick buildings. The gallery itself is quite inconspicuous, with a small old fashioned store front – which is very different to the modern glass windowed fronts that most art galleries seem to favour in central London. However, as it champions itself as a space for outsider space it does make sense for there to be a visible indication of this from the outside. It clearly stands out as being different to any other art gallery.
Stepping inside it becomes that many of the original features of the building have been preserved, including a fire place and a floor stained with history. The exhibition space is quite compact and it doesn’t take long to walk around, however there is plenty of wall space for art to be hung up – and in this kind of gallery it is best to carefully consider everything that has been exhibited for our perusal. It is more than likely that the work you will see in this gallery can’t be seen anywhere else.
For someone just walking around London it is a fabulous little gem of a place to unintentionally discover, but for anyone with a keen interest in art, and specifically outsider art, this is one place which can’t be missed. It is about a ten minute walk from Baker Street or Bond Street in a fairly quiet part of central London, Chiltern Street is really interesting for window shopping, and for visiting this great little gallery.
