Tate Modern, which has a symbol of a high chimney near the river Thames in the south bank area, is one of the most popular museums in London. It was opened in May in the millennium year数あるロンドンの美術館の中でもひときわ人気なのが、テムズ川沿いサウスバンク地区にある、大きな煙突が特徴のテート・モダンだ。オープンは2000年5月、ミレニアムを記念しての事だったが、すぐにMOMAやポンピドゥーセンターと並ぶ世界を代表する現代美術館となった。
元々発電所だった施設をテートグループが増え続ける現代美術品の所蔵用にと買い上げ、改築されて現在の姿になったのだが、１階から７階までが吹き抜けになっているなど、元発電所のメリットを活かしたデザインになっている。これはスイス人建築家ユニットのヘルツォーク＆ド・ムーロンによるもので、その外観も、ガラス張りの壁が驚くほどレンガ造りの建物にとけ込んだ、クラシックかつモダンな印象だ。
展示室は３階から５階になっており、４階の全フロアを使って行われる企画展以外は無料で見られるため、常に沢山の人で賑わっている。１階タービン・ホールでは、その巨大なスペースを活かした迫力のあるインスタレーションを楽しむ事ができる。
たくさんの現代アート鑑賞に疲れたら、一息つける場所を見つけよう。館内にはアート関連の本や雑誌が非常に品揃え豊富な本屋や、ミュージアムショップ、カフェが併設されていて、特に７階にあるレストラン＆カフェでは、目の前に広がるテムズ川、そこに架かるミレニアムブリッジ、そしてその先のセント・ポール大聖堂を眺めながら食事ができるのでおすすめだ。現代アートと聞くと「難しそう」という印象を持ってしまう人でも、きっと楽しめるこの美術館。ロンドンでの外せない観光スポットのひとつである。

Tate Group purchased the building which was a former power station to display outgrown international modern art collections and converted to be as a new museum. The architect of the building was Herzog & de Meuron, a Swiss architect unit , and they retained the character of the former power station such as a huge turbine hall. They combined brick wall and glass very effectively and it is not only classic, but modern looking.
Exhibit rooms are from level three to five. You can see the exhibits for free except for the temporary exhibition on the whole level four. The turbine hall on the ground floor became a dramatic display space to enjoy dynamic installation projects.
When you are tired of watching many contemporary art works, let’s find a place to take a break. The museum has a book store with well selected art books and magazines abundantly, a museum shop, and cafes. Especially in the top floor of the museum is a cafe & restaurant, you can enjoy a meal with stunning views of the river Thames and the millennium bridge linking St. Paul’s Cathedral and the museum. Even the visitors who hesitate about contemporary art are surely able to have a good time there. This is one of the “must-see” spots in London.
