London is a city full of the old and the new, and in the south of this amazing city you can find a grand old building which is, if anything, very much young at heart. This dignified building, which was built in the late 1880s, is the home of the South London Gallery and it has been welcoming visitors through its doors for over a hundred years.古いものと新しいもので溢れている街、ロンドン。この素晴らしい街の南には、とても古くて壮大ながら、新鮮さに溢れる建物がある。 1880年代後半に建てられたこの威厳ある建物は、サウスロンドン・ギャラリーの本拠地であり、100年以上にわたって訪問者を歓迎してきた。
ギャラリーは、16世紀から19世紀にかけての芸術作品が並ぶ歴史的コレクションと、1970年代以降の145の芸術作品で構成された現代コレクションの２つの常設コレクションを有している。特に1990年代初頭から、このギャラリーは新しいアーティストと確立されたアーティストの両方によるアートの発表に力を注いでいる。
ペッカム・ライ駅から数分のペッカムロードに位置するギャラリーは、一目で歴史のある建物だということが分かるほど、周囲の建物とは一線を画している。ギャラリー内部は明るく広々としており、建物の外観とは全く違う印象だ。たとえば、メインギャラリーは100年前とほぼ変わっていないが、配色が一新された。期間限定の展覧会はここで催されている。
近年、使用されていない古い近隣の建物をギャラリースペースや書店、そしてカフェに変え、ギャラリーは拡大している。カフェはとても高い天井と内側と外側のスペースをつなぐために開くことができる特別なドアを備え、もちろん美味しい食べ物や飲み物もある素敵なスペースとなっている。さらに2018年には、かつて消防署であった建物に新しいアートスペース「ファイヤー・ステーション」がオープンした。
最近オープンしたオロスコ・ガーデンは、ユニークで好奇心旺盛なアート作品だ。アーティスト、ガブリエル・オロスコが作ったレンガでできた複雑な円でいっぱいのユニークなこのエリアは、庭園の終わりと始まりがわからないほど。一方、フォックス・ガーデンは木々や植物、そして自然の美しさを鑑賞できるベンチがある、より伝統的な庭園だ。
さらに、サウスロンドン・ギャラリーには69ペッカムロードに位置するアパートでのアーティストレジデンシープログラムもある。イギリスでアートプログラムを修了しているアーティストは、6ヶ月間の滞在が可能だ。

Translation: Chinami OdaThe gallery itself has two permanent collections of art, the Historic Collection with artworks dating from the 16th century to the 19th century, and the Contemporary Collection made up of 145 artworks dated from the 1970s and onwards. In particular since the early 1990s the gallery has been dedicated to presenting art by both new and established artists.
Located on Peckham Road, a few minutes from Peckham Rye Overground station, the building is instantly recognizable as being different to the surrounding buildings. You can definitely tell that this is a building with history. However, inside the rooms are bright and spacious and seem to be a world away from the building’s exterior – even though, for example, the main gallery looks nearly the same as it did a hundred years ago, though with a different color scheme, and continues to host temporary exhibitions.
In recent years the gallery has been expanding with a derelict neighboring house being turned into additional gallery space, a bookshop, and the Habit Café. The café itself is a gorgeous space with extra high ceilings, special patio doors which can be opened up to join the inside and outside spaces together, and of course great food and drinks. In addition in 2018 a new art space Fire Station was opened at the former Peckham Road Fire Station.
The recently created Orozco Garden is a truly unique, and curious, art piece – it is in fact hard to see where the garden ends and where the art begins as artist Gabriel Orozco has created a unique area full of intricate circles made of brick. The Fox Garden is a more traditional garden in the sense that it has trees and plants, as well as benches where one can ponder the beauty of nature.
In addition to all of the above recent additions the South London Gallery also has an artist residency programme with a flat situation at the top of 69 Peckham Road. Six month residencies are available for artists who are completing a programme of study in the UK.
