Austrian gallerist Thaddaeus Ropac started Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in 1983 and over the years has opened galleries in Salzburg, Paris and Paris Pantin. It represents around 60 artists, holds solo and group exhibitions and participates in major art fairs around the world and even has its own publishing house. Over the past 12 years Thaddaeus has received the Officier dans L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from French President Jacques Chirac, the gold cross from the Austrian Republic and was awarded the Art and Culture prize from The Chamber of Commerce in Salzburg. When Thaddaeus found out that a specific building in London had become available he was immediately interested, and it is no surprise why.オーストリアのギャラリスト、タダエス・ロパックは1983年にギャラリー・タダエス・ロパックをスタートし、数年のうちにザルツブルク、パリ、パリ・パンタンにギャラリーをオープンした。約60名のアーティストが所属し、個展やグループ展を開催、独自の出版部門も持ちながら、世界のメジャーなアートフェアにも参加している。12年以上にわたり、タダエスはフランス大統領ジャック・シラク氏から芸術文化勲章を授与された。オーストリア共和国からはゴールド・クロスを、ザルツブルクの商工会からは文化芸術賞が授与された。ロンドンのとあるビルに入居可能だと知ると、タダエスはすぐに興味を持った。驚くべきことではあるまい。
メイフェアのイーリー・ハウスはイーリー司教のために1776年に建てられ、ずっと後の1908年からはプライベートの会員制クラブ、アルベマール・クラブとなった。第二次大戦中はアメリカ赤十字のために提供された。もっと最近では、アンティーク・ディーラーが所有していた。深い歴史を持った建物であり、独自の存在感を放っている。2016年に空きが出ると多くの関心が寄せられたが、ギャラリー タダエス・ロパックが見事にそれを手に入れたのだ。そして2017年春に初めてそのドアが開かれた。
アナベル・セルドーフによりリノベーションされた空間は５フロアーにまたがりギャラリーを展開する。外観は変わらず、だが、一歩中に入ると、まるで異次元の世界に入り込んだような独特の異質な雰囲気を感じることができる。間違いなく、それは歌手が片隅で歌っているような現在の展示によるところもある。歌声が建物の壁に響いているのだ。長く白い廊下が大きな展示室へと導く。その道なりに小さな展示室と美しい大理石の階段もある。
各階、美しくリノベーションされ、そこには真の「明るさ」がある。これがロンドンでのギャラリー タダエス・ロパックのギャラリーである。歴史的ビルの空間を魅力的に活用し、ユニークな雰囲気を作り出す。これから数々の素晴らしい展示がここで見られるのだろうという期待を感じずにはいられない。

Translation: Fuyumi SaitoEly House in Mayfair was built in 1776 for the Bishop of Ely, much later from 1908 it was a private members’ club, the Albemarle Club, and during the Second World War it was home to the American Red Cross. More recently it was occupied by an antique dealer. It is a building with a deep history, and it has its own strong presence. When it became available in 2016 there was a lot of interest in it, but it was successfully acquired by Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac and it opened its doors for the first time in spring 2017.
It was renovated by Annabelle Selldorf, with the gallery spread across five floors with over 1,500 m2 of space. The outside is unchanged, but once you step through the entrance you feel a distinctively different atmosphere as if you have stepped into a different time and place. No doubt this is partly due to the current exhibition in which singers place themselves in corners, etc., and sing notes which resonate with the walls of the building. A long white corridor leads you to a large exhibition space, but along the way you have a small exhibition room and a beautiful marble staircase.
On every floor the spaces have been beautifully renovated and there is a true sense of lightness. This is Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac’s first gallery in London, and as it is in such a historic building with a great use of space and unique atmosphere one can only wait in anticipation of the many great exhibitions to be shown here.
