Repurposed from bubble-era snack bars (similar to hostess bars), y gion is a collaborative space that offers pop-up art exhibitions, live music shows, culinary experiences, and retail shops. Opening in Fall 2017, y gion brings artistic diversity to Kyoto’s famed Gion district with a five-story building complete with a panoramic rooftop view of the Kamo river.京阪三条駅の南に位置するバブル時代のスナックバーを再利用した「y gion」はポップアップのアート展覧会、ライブミュージック、料理、小売店などが集まるコラボスペース。鴨川のパノラマビューが見える屋上つき５階建てビルのこの施設は、2017年秋のオープニングから京都・祇園にアーティスティックな多様性を提案している。
中に入ると、ネオンライトが客を迎え、鴨川のすばらしい眺望と川沿いのテラスで食事も楽しめる４階のギャラリーを前にして、大きなテーブルトップがDJを待っている。４階にはミニバーがあり、アルコール類やシャンパン、ソフトドリンクを10席ある花崗岩のテーブルの、ミニマルなセッティングで提供している。バーエリアは、コンクリートの壁、追加の座席、グレーのサブウェイタイルなどモダンなインダストリアルテイストのインテリアでまとめられていて、窓から眺める山の景色ともバランスが良い。
焼酎カクテルと鴨川の絶好な眺望が融合するルーフトップバー「サワーガーデン」は、天候が許す限り暖かい時期に期間限定でオープン。カクテルは焼酎とレモンやスイカ、パッションフルーツ、キュウリなどをミックスしたものがある。
アーティスティック、コラボレイティブ、クリエイティブ。y gionは、京都のアート、骨董、歴史そしてレクリエーションエリアにおいて、クリエイティブな人たちのスリリングな場所になっている。これからも、サウンド、視覚、味、触覚などホワイトキューブギャラリーを超えた、終わりのないクリエイティブな経験を楽しむことができるだろう。

Text: Amelia IjiriAt present, neon lights greet customers, and a large tabletop awaits a DJ in the front 4th floor gallery, which offers stunning views of the Kamo river and its riverside terrace dining culture. The 4th floor also includes the Candy Bar Gallery that offers alcoholic mixes, soft drinks, and champagne served in a minimalist setting on ten-seat granite island. The bar area has a modern industrial interior that features concrete walls, additional seating, and gray subway tiles. This interior offsets rustic views of neighboring tile rooftops and mountains viewable through floor to ceiling windows.
The Shochu mixology together with the stunning river view combined at the Sour Garden, a rooftop that runs through during warm good weather season. Cocktails created using shochu, a hard liqour often made from grains and tubers, and fermented by koji, a filamentous fungus, include lemon, watermelon, passion fruit, and cucumber variations.
Artistic, collaborative, and creative, y gion is a vibrant space for creatives centered in Kyoto’s artsy, antique, historical, and recreational area south of Keihan Sanjo station. Bringing sound, sight, taste, and tactile experiences to reenvision art beyond white cube galleries, y gion offers a never-ending palette of creative experiences to sample and enjoy.
