何必館・京都現代美術館Kahitsukan

Kahitsukan Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art is located near Yasaka Shrine in Gion, Kyoto. Kahitsukan was named and opened in 1981 by the director Yoshitomo Kajikawa京都・祇園の八坂神社に程近い場所に位置する「何必館（かひつかん）・京都現代美術館」（以下、何必館）。人がしばられがちな定説を「何ぞ必ずしも」と疑う、自由の精神を持ちつづけたいという願いから、館長である梶川芳友氏に名付けられ、1981年11月に開館した。
玄静石を使用した外観の美術館館内には、何必館の柱である日本画家の村上華岳（1888～1939）、洋画家の山口薫（1907～1968）、陶芸をはじめ美術工芸のあらゆる分野で活躍した作家の北大路魯山人（1883～1959）の作品や、国内外から近現代の絵画、工芸、写真作品を収蔵、展示している他、年に数回特別企画展も開催している。
美への貢献を望む何必館では、美術品がより美しく見える場として、その鑑賞空間の美しさにもこだわり、地下１階から地上５階まである建物全体に美を追究。館長自ら設計に携わっている。最上階の５階には、「光庭」（写真）を配し、村上華岳の作品を展示している茶室が設えられており、上空からの光が差し込む美しい光庭の風景を眺めることができる。
何必館で開催された展覧会や常設している作品に関連する、本やポスター、ポストカードなどのミュージアムグッズの取扱いもおこなっており、通信販売にて購入可能。
定期的に近代現代のアーティストの個展を行っているので、ウェブサイトで予定をチェックして訪れてみてほしい。美術の素晴らしさや美しさを、まっさらで自由な気持ちで体験することができる数少ない場所だろう。

Text: Mariko Takei, with a desire to maintain freedom to doubt preconceived ideas and theories, which people often are bound by, questioning all things (ka) might not really (hitsu) be as one is led to believe.
Inside the museum, they have three collections of works by a modern Japanese-style painter Kagaku Murakami (1888-1939) , oil painter Kaoru Yamaguchi (1907-1968), and internationally well-known artist in all fields of art and craft Rosanjin Kitaoji (1883-1959). In addition, they house and display the modern and contemporary artworks of paintings, craft works and photographs from Japan and overseas. The special exhibition is also held several times throughout year.
Wishing its contribution to beauty, Kahitsukan focuses on the beauty of art space. As a place to show art pieces more beautiful, Kahitsukan pursues beauty for the whole 5-storey building with a basement, by director’s participation to its design. On the 5th floor, there is a beautifully sunlit Sun Garden that can be viewed from the Tea-ceremony room where displays an artwork of Kagaku Murakami.
Museum goods are also sold at the museum, featuring books, posters, catalogues, and postcards that are related to the art exhibitions and collections at Kahitsukan.
