Jakarta Textile Museum is a place that introduces the culture and history of Indonesian traditional textiles called “ikat” and a dyeing process called “batik”. For Indonesian people, ikat and batik are great artsジャカルタ・テキスタイル博物館は、インドネシアの伝統的な織物文化を紹介する博物館。インドネシア人にとってイカット（織物）やバティック（染物）は、国が誇る伝統的な文化・芸術であり、毎週金曜日バティックデーとして国民がバティックを身につけることを推奨する日として指定されているほど、現代の生活にも浸透している。
この博物館は、本館、バティックギャラリー、ワークショップセンター、自然染色庭園、図書館などから成っている。正面にある本館は、もともと植民地時代に作られたフランス人の個人邸であった。本館ではインドネシアの島々から収集された博物館のコレクションが展示されており、時には世界中の研究家やコレクターが協力する企画展が行われているので、オフィシャルウェブサイトでチェックしてほしい。
本館の隣には、アンティークな造りのバティックギャラリーがあり、様々な地域から集められたバティックが展示されている。奥に進むと自然染色の庭園が広がり、染色に使われる様々な植物が育てられている。ワークショップセンターでは実際にバティック（ろうけつ染め）の体験を行うことができ、真剣なまなざしで下絵から作業に取り組んでいる人も見かける。
その他にインドネシアの織物・染物に関する資料を集めたライブラリー、そして様々な時代や地域の織機を集めた展示室、ムスリムのためのお祈りスペースも完備されている。バティックの衣類やアクセサリー、書籍を購入できる売店もあるので、素敵なお土産を探してみよう。

Text: Mio Ota that they can be proud of. The textile tradition is quite common in their modern life as the national government deems every Friday as “batik day,” encouraging people to wear batik clothes.
This museum consists of a Main Gallery, Batik Gallery, Work shop center, Natural Dyeing Garden and a Library. The Main Gallery was originally the private residence of a French person during the colonial period. You can see the museum collections gathered from many islands in Indonesia. Sometimes collaborations with researchers and collectors take place. Please check on the official website for updates.
Next to the main gallery is the antique architecture of the Batik Gallery. Many kinds of batik from various regions and eras are here. Out behind the gallery, there is a natural dyeing garden with many plants available for dyeing. It’s possible to do batik work at the workshop center. You can find some serious looks as people work from under-drawings, trying to tackle this craft.
There is also a library with a lots of documents about Indonesian textiles and batik, also the exhibition room of weaving machines, Muslim prayer room, and a shop where you can get nice batik clothes, accessories and books for souvenirs.
