Getting to the Peak by the Peak Tram is an unforgettable experience. One of the world’s oldest and most famous funicular railways, the tram rises to 396 metres (about 1,300 feet) above sea level. The Peak Tram was once the only public transportation network that brought residents from Central to The Peak, yet it turns out to be a must-experience tourist attraction now even with the competition from other means of transportation available.
Although the entire journey to The Peak takes around 10 minutes, it is always a fantastic moment throughout. Once you step in to the vintage burgundy carriage, remember to take a seat on the right in order to have a better view. All the way to The Peak is steep and spectacular with panoramic views over the northern coast of Hong Kong Island, Victoria Harbour as well as the Kowloon peninsula. Each tram has 90 seats and 30 standings carrying 120 passengers at a time. If you are one of the 30 left out with seats, standing and experiencing standing at 27 degrees horizontally during part of the uphill journey would be another unforgettable experience. There are in total six stations (with four intermediate stations) in this 1,365 meters long trip, namely the Garden Road Peak Tram Lower Terminus, Kennedy Road, Macdonnell Road, May Road, Barker Road and the Peak Tram Upper Terminus.
This double reversible funicular system runs from 7 am to 12 midnight daily, seven days a week and has carried the first passenger since 1888, servicing more than 120 years till now. As a way of paying tribute to The Peak Tram, The Peak Tram Historical Gallery was open in September 2007 at Peak Tram Lower Terminus. The Peak Tram Historical Gallery, with more than 200 memorabilia exhibited, is divided into 15 theme sections taking visitors back to Hong Kong in the 19th and 20th century. Major highlights of the exhibits include a replica of the first generation Peak Tram carriage have been brought to life and the 1926 Haulage Room is recreated which was responsible for pulling the Trams up and down the Peak for over 60 years.
The venerable Peak Tram is, as most passengers agree, the only way to truly experience the beauty of Hong Kong’s natural wonders and harbour view. Tens of millions of people from every corner of the globe have taken the ride, which affords a uniquely spectacular perspective of the city. Moreover, since 1888, The Peak Tram has served Hong Kong, quietly witnessing 120 years of the city’s changes and is arguably the most enduring emblem of Hong Kong’s unique past. It has seen war, been featured on films and television and played host to numerous dignitaries. The Peak Tram is certainly worth a status in Hong Kong that can never be replaced.
