MobArt is a different kind of gallery. They have been showcasing new emerging local artists around town in Hong Kong. Not in a gallery space but in lounges, restaurants and cafes「モブ・アート」は通常のギャラリーではない。香港で活躍する新進気鋭の地元アーティスト達の作品をギャラリーではなく、ラウンジやレストラン、カフェなどに展示をする。作品を選定し飾る独自の感覚は、飾られる環境に新たな息吹を与えている。香港で他とは違うアートやギャラリーを探しているなら、ウェブサイトで今後の展示の予定をチェックしてほしい。
モブ・アートのディレクターで設立者のステフ・チャンは、オックスフォード大学で経済と経営学を学んだ、若手企業家の新たな一人。海外生活の後、自身の夢を追い求めて香港へと帰国。ロンドンの金融業界で働くうち、美術館訪問や内覧会へ参加するようになり、そこでアーティストたちと直に話す機会を得た。香港へ戻ってから、アートを取り巻く状況がいかに閉ざされているか驚かされたと言う。展覧会のオープニングに行っても、いるのはアーティストか業者のどちらか。彼女のような単純にアートを愛する者は誰一人いなかったのだ。そこで浮かんだ考えが、アートを香港の都市生活に無くてははらない存在にしよう、というものだった。
まず、モブ・アートについて教えて下さい。
従来のギャラリーとは違って、固定された場所を持たず、展覧会を街中のレストランやカフェ、ラウンジなどで開催する、遊牧民なスタイルを取っています。私たちの主な目的は人々、特に普段アートに触れることの無い人々へ積極的にアートを提供していくことです。日々の生活にアートを取り入れることで閉塞的な状況を打破し、アートを身近なものにして行きたい。そしてアートをもっと堅苦しくない（例えば壁は一面白一色で、さらに熱心に販売してくるようなギャラリーではなく）親しみやすい環境に置くことで、見る人にもっと気軽に楽しんでもらいたいと考えています。モブ・アートは2009年にスタートしたばかりですが、2010年の初めに自分たちの事務所を手に入れて以来、人々にアートを届ける活動を数多く行ってきていますし、良い評価もたくさん頂いています。それぞれの詳細は是非、私たちのウェブサイトをご覧下さい。
香港について。この仕事をするにあたり、香港という街はどうなのでしょうか？
香港は実に様々な国籍や背景をもった人々が集まる国際的な都市です。東洋と西洋が混ざり合った文化、とほとんどの人が言いますが、まさにその通りです。それに香港の人々は活動的な生活を送っており、たいてい皆あちらこちち走り回っていて、立ち止まることがありません。
私の仕事は基本的には作品（たいていが若手アーティストのもの）を販売することですが、この市場はまだ十分に発展しているとは言えませんし、あまり有名でないアーティストの作品を購入するという考え自体、やっと広まりつつある状態です。ですので今のところはまだこの市場で事業を行うことは難しいですね。でも確信しているのは、この市場が今後成長していく潜在的可能性は大いにあり、作品に込められたアーティストの創造性や努力を皆が理解して大切にしてくれるだろうということです。
香港のアート及びデザインシーンについてはどう思われますか？
投資やオークションはとても活発に行われています。新しいアーティストを取り巻く状況について言えば、いくつかの活動が行われており、特に政府の援助を受けたものが多いですね。
あなたが生活し仕事をしているこの街で気に入っている場所はありますか？
南湾海岸ですね。ストレスが溜まったり落ち込んだりした時、もしくは香港の喧騒から逃れたい時はそこで時間を過ごすのが好きです。穏やかな海を見ていると落ち着きますし、元気が貰えてまた日々の課題に立ち向かっていく気にさせてくれます。
モブ・アートの今後の計画を教えてください。
様々な場所で展覧会を行うことにより、もっともっと多くの人に作品を見て貰えるような場を提供していきたいと思っています。年間9から10の展覧会を開くのが目標です。ほとんど毎月ということですね。ただし夏の間はお休みです。新しいアーティストや場所を探さなければいけませんからね！さらにもっと大きな規模なイベントを開催して皆に楽しんでもらい、本物のアート作品を購入してもらいたいですね（ただしこれはまだ企画中なので具体的な内容はお伝えできないのですが）。

Steph Chung is a director/ founder of MobArt. Trained in Economics and Management at Oxford University, Steph is a new breed of young entrepreneurs who returned home to pursue her dream after living overseas. While she worked in the finance industry in London, she has developed an interest in visiting art galleries and going to previews, an occasion which allowed her to meet with and talk to the artists first hand. Since her return to Hong Kong, she was surprised to find a rather closed art scene – most people found at art show openings were either artists or someone from the trade; there was none like her, simply an art lover! That’s when the idea came – to make Art integral of the urban lifestyle in Hong Kong!
Can you tell us about MobArt?
Unlike the traditional galleries, we don’t have a fixed space, rather we have adopted a nomadic style of “living” through curating art shows around town, in places like restaurants, cafes, lounges etc. Our main objective is to proactively bring art to the people, especially to those who don’t normally look at art. By injecting art back into our everyday, we hope we could “break the ice” and make art more accessible to everyone. In addition, by having art in a less formal (i.e. not a gallery with white walls and a keen sales) and more familiar settings, we hope the audience will enjoy art at ease.
MobArt is still very young, having only started a year ago, but since the beginning of this year, after getting our own office space, we have been very active in bringing art to everyone and have gained a lot of positive feedback.
Please tell us about Hong Kong, and how about living in Hong Kong for the work you do?
Hong Kong is a cosmopolitan city with people from diverse nationality and background. It is, as most people have correctly said, a mix culture where East meets West. And people in Hong Kong lead an active life, you normally find people rushing from place to place and never stopping for a second.
For the work I do, which is essentially selling art (mostly emerging artist’s art), it is still an under-developed market and people are still getting used to the idea of buying art from lesser-known artists. So for now, it is still a difficult market to operate in, but we firmly believe that there is a huge potential for this market to grow and people will start to treasure the creativity and effort artists pour into their works.
What do you think about the art/ design scenes in Hong Kong?
The art scene within the investment and auction category is very vibrant in Hong Kong. As for the scene among emerging artists, we can hear some noise being made, especially with the support of the government.
What Please tell us a favourite place in the city you live and work in.
South Bay. I like spending my time there whenever I am stressed or feel lost or need a break from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. Looking at the peacefulness of the Ocean calms me down and enables me to regain my energy and drive to face my everyday challenge.
What’s the future plan of MobArt?
We are hoping to act as a platform for artists to reach a much wider audience through curating shows in different places. We are aiming to open 9-10 shows a year, so pretty much every month (bar our summer months for research- scouting new artists and venues)! On top of that, we hope to organize a much bigger event that will enable everyone to enjoy and be able to buy genuine art (still in the making – so concrete ideas are yet to be announced).
