Mountain Yam is a young talented fashion designer in Hong Kong whose brand “MOUNTAIN YAM” focuses on the highest level of craftsmanship and exceptional detailing. His design holds the structural, architectural elementsマウンテン・ヤムは香港の新進気鋭、若手ファッションデザイナーである。彼のブランド「マウンテン・ヤム」は熟練の高度な技と並外れた細かさを特徴としている。マウンテンのデザインは構造的、建築的な要素を秘めているが、それは彼のハンドバックデザイナーとしてのキャリアに起因するものだ。デイウェアラインの「112 マウンテンヤム」が最近メンズウェアとハンドバックのデザインを始めたことで、男女問わず彼のデザインを手頃な価格で体験できるようになった。
まずはじめに自己紹介をお願いします。
香港のファッションデザイナー、マウンテン・ヤムです。香港理工大学で学士号と博士号を取りました。学部生だった頃、ニューヨーク州立ファッション工科大学（F.I.T.）に交換留学しました。現在は自身のブランドとしてイブニングクチュールの「マウンテン・ヤム」と手頃な価格のデイウェアの「112マウンテンヤム」を立ち上げて活動しています。
最近街で見かけた面白いものはありますか？または日頃チェックしているものはありますか？
日頃チェックしているのは香港貿易発展局（TDC）によるファッショナリー・ドットコム。香港のデザイナーやアーティスト、アートプレイスを紹介しているウェブサイトです。街でみかけたものといえば先日、上環のコンゼップというお店にいいサングラスがありました。あのあたりは素敵なセレクトショップもいくつかありますね。それから湾仔のスターストリートへディナーに出かけたり、45Rや紳士服のクラブモナコ等のショップを見にいくのも好きです。
香港で住むということ、ビジネスを起こすということについてどうお考えですか？
輸送や資材の点でいうと香港はとても便利な場所だと思います。問題は気候ですね。ファッションが発展するには10〜20℃が適していて、より多重的なレイヤーや面白いアイディアに繋がるのです。香港は少し暑すぎるかもしれません。他にも香港の人たちは西洋的なスタイルを好む傾向にあって、地場のプロダクトに対してあまり寛容でありません。香港で会社を設立してローカルな人々をターゲットにするとすれば、安くて良いものを作るしかないのです。従って中国本土等、香港以外のマーケットを開拓していくことを余儀なくされることもしばしばあります。政府からの援助もありますが、リソースがきちんと整理されていませんので、香港はビジネスに適した場所ではありますが、どんなビジネスかによると思います。
香港のお気に入りの場所を教えてください。旅行者におすすめの場所はありますか？
私は上環（ションワン）のハリウッドロードが好きです。いいレストランもたくさんあって、小さいけれど素敵なプティックやショップがあります。その中でもお気に入りは、Po’sアトリエ（パン屋）、リリー・アンド・ブルーム（レストラン）、ブルー・ブッチャー（レストラン）、ヤードバード（レストラン）、カウ・キー・レストラン（牛モツ麺）です。食べる事が好き！それとランタオ島に行くのも好きですが、そのための時間はなかなか取れません。仕事から離れるには香港的なスタイルと喧噪から離れた場所に行くのが一番ですね。海岸が好きで、尖沙咀（チムサーチョイ）でも構わないので、毎晩のライトショーを見ながら友達とビール片手に何気ない話をするのも大好きです。
香港のどこに行けばマウンテン・ヤムの服を見つけられますか？
銅鑼湾（コーズウェイベイ）のファッションウォークにあるマゼンタに取り扱いがあります。価格帯は約600〜3,000香港ドルです。

Please introduce yourself.
I’m Mountain Yam, Hong Kong fashion designer. I graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, for Bachelor and Master degree. During my Bachelor degree, I went to Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) in NY as an exchange student and I own my brand “Mountain Yam”, evening couture line and “112mountainyam” for affordable daywear.
Is there anything you found interesting in city recently? Or do you have anything you check habitually?
Fashionary.com by TDC, a website that recommends us some designers, artists and nice artistic places in the Hong Kong. On the other day, I found good sunglasses at Konzepp in Sheung Wan. Also there are some good selected shops nearby. Moreover, I like to go to Star street in Wan Chai for dinner and visit nice shops such as 45R and Club Monaco men’s store.
What is it like living and doing your own business in HK?
I think it’s a convenient place for business in terms of shipments and resources. Only problem is its climate as the fashion needs good weather with 10-20 degrees and we can create more layers, more interesting ideas. Also another thing is people in Hong Kong tend to love westernized style or products and are not really patient for local products. That’s why if you own your company in Hong Kong and target the local customers, it’s not easy unless you make cheap products with good value. So we are sometimes obliged to explore new market outside the city like mainland China. Also, we get support from government but the resources are still not well organized yet so I think Hong Kong is good place for business but depends on what kinds.
Please tell us your favorite place in HK, any recommendation for the people who visit HK?
I like to go to Sheung Wan, Hollywood road. There are many good restaurants and small good boutique and shops. Some of my favorites are, Po’s atelier (bakery shop), Lilly and Bloom (restaurant), Blue Butcher (restaurant), Yardbird (restaurant), Kau Kee Restaurant for beef organs noodle. I love food!
I also like to go to Lantau island but I don’t have much time for it. The best way to stay away from work is to go to a place with less people and less Hong Kong style. I like to go to seaside, even in TST to see everyday light show with beer and my buddies for casual talks.
