Cheuk Wan Chi is a director, writer, artist, and now well-known for her multimedia art project called “Born To Be A Witness” チェク・ワン・チーは、香港で活躍するディレクターであり、ライターであり、アーティスト。アートプロジェクト「Born To Be A Witness」を手掛けたことで注目を集め、2009年には香港にあるマッドハウス・コンテンポラリーにて初の個展を開催した。
自己紹介と最近の活動内容について教えてください。
香港でライター兼ラジオ番組の司会をしています。現在はロンドンの美術学校に通いファインアートを専攻しています。
最近の活動では、「Born To Be A Witness」という香港のカルチャーに関するマルチメディア・アートプロジェクトを終えたところです。最初は、ただ何かトライしてみたくて、全てピュアなものにしようと意図してたのですが、できあがってみたら「マッドハウス・コンテンポラリー」というギャラリーから2009年の１月に個展をしませんかと誘われたのです。楽しかったですね。
香港について教えてください。その街で暮らすことや仕事をすることについてどう思いますか？
一国民として、香港はいろんな意味で大好きですし、ホームタウンの香港には無制限の愛を与えたいなと思います。
ファインアーティストとしては、批評になってしまい申し訳ないですが、香港は特別なところだし、全くもって変なところです。香港の特徴や起こっている現象の全てをいつも書き留めておきたいと思いますね。それで、その書類を心理学者に渡して、それらの「現象」を精神分析してもらいたいです。まるで香港がひとりの人間であるかのようにね。そうしたら、その患者さんの報告には、香港は精神病か強迫障害を患っていると記されているかもしれないですね（笑）。
香港で好きな場所を教えてください。
お気に入りの場所に、セントラルにある「センス99」というバーがあります。たくさんのアーティスト、独立系の映像作家、ミュージシャン、デザイナーが集っている場所です。多様な文化が入り交じって、私は友人と一緒に週末に行くことが多いですね。でもやっぱりどこにいるかではなくて、誰と一緒にいるかということが大きいですね。
香港のクリエイティブシーンについてどう思いますか？
ニューヨークやロンドンやミュンヘンに比べたら、あまり健全であるとは思いませんね。香港には実用的な、よく働く人がたくさんいますが、ビジョンを持ったクリエイティブな人では少ないです。でもここ数年でクリエイティブシーンは段々良くなってきてはいます。ギャラリーやスタジオがオープンしているし、いろんなイベントがあちらこちらで行われてます。

ライター、ディレクター、アーティスト。手掛けた脚本に、「メリーゴーラウンド」（2001年香港映画批評家協会賞の最優秀脚本賞受賞）、「20 30 40」（2004年ベルリン国際映画祭、金熊賞ノミネート）、「エクソダス」（ゴールデン・バウヒニア賞の脚本賞ノミネート）があり、雑誌や新聞でもコラムニストとして活躍。映画「ヒーローズ・イン・ラブ」やショートフィルム「ホモサピエンス」「ロスト＆ファウンド」の監督も務める。アートプロジェクト「Born To Be A Witness」を手掛けるクリエイターでもあり、初の個展を2009年に開催。 which was exhibited as her first solo show in 2009 at Madhouse Contemporary located in Hong Kong.
Please tell us yourself and your recent activity.
I am a writer and radio show host in Hong Kong, now heading London art school major into Fine Art. Recently, I finished an art project titled ‘Born To Be A Witness’; a multi-media art project about culture of Hong Kong. At first, my intension was all out of purity. Just want to try and explore. As it turns out, a contemporary art gallery (Madhouse Contemporary) decided to invite me to put on a solo exhibition held in January 2009. It was fun.
Please tell us about your city, and how about living in your city for yourself/activity.
As a citizen, I do love Hong Kong in many ways. And would like to give all my unconditional love to my hometown.
As a fine artist, pardon me for being critical. Hong Kong is special, and yet, utterly crazy. I always want to jot down all characteristics and phenomenon of Hong Kong. Pass the document file to a psychologist, asking the psychologist to analyst those ‘syndromes’, as if Hong Kong is a human being. The ‘patient report’ might turn out stating that Hong Kong is experiencing psychosis, or OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Ha.
Please tell us favourite places in the city you live and work in, with the reason why you like.
One of my favorite places is bar called Sense 99 in Central. It’s a cozy place in which lots of artists, independent filmmakers, musicians and designers hang out. The culture is very diverse. My friends and me had spent lots of weekends there. After all, it’s not where you are, it’s who you are with.
What do you think about the creative scene in the city?
Comparing to NY or London or Munich, not quite healthy. Hong Kong produces lots of practical and hard-working people but not much creative people with vision. But the creative scene is getting better and better in this couple of years. Gallery and studio openings, art shows and happenings are like everywhere. So, lets go and see.
