Calvin Ho started Atomic Attack! in 1997 to follow his own interests. In the last 12 years he has opened a specialized dance music record shop and partnered to art direct and design a local magazine called Chalk!, the stuff you sniff. His interests lie in music and djing1997年に、自分の興味に従い「アトミックアタック!」を始めた、カルバン・ホー。過去12年の間でダンスミュージックに特化したレコードショップを開き、「Chalk!」という香港の雑誌のアートディレクションとデザインを担当。彼の関心は音楽とDJにあり、ナイキやアディダス、iTのパーティーや色々なイベントでのDJや、ユナイテッド・フューチャー・オーガニゼーション、ジャイルス・ピーターソンといった著名DJ達と一緒にプレイも行っている。
現在は、ユニークなデザインやイラストレーションを制作するためにファッション業界と音楽業界に注目。ノキア、ソニー、リーバイス、マイクロソフト、カルティエ、レーンクロフォードなどをクライアントに抱えるほか、自身のラジオ番組「マスターシュ・イン・ディスガイズ」の制作や、アーティストとしてのパーソナルワークの制作を行っている。
まずはじめに自己紹介と、最近の活動について教えて下さい。
私は香港に生まれ、５歳でオーストラリアのシドニーに移住しました。ファインアートを勉強した後、別の学校でグラフィックデザインを学びました。卒業後１年間働いてから、この街の業界の状況を知るために香港に戻りました。デザイナー、イラストレーターとしての他、私はDJとしても活動しています。初めてのDJは、1988年にシドニーで行いました。最近はカルティエのための８ページのイラストを完成させたほか、青春をテーマにした雑誌のために素敵な作品を制作しました。また、DGの「100％香港デザイン」北京店のオープニングのためにモーショングラフィックの映像作品も手がけました。
香港という街について、そして香港での生活について教えて下さい。
私にとって香港での暮らしには良い面と悪い面があります。香港はとても便利で何もかもが新しく、時代の最先端をゆく街です。これは私が好きなところです。また、よその街に暮らすまでは当たり前に感じていたのですが、この街はとても安全で夜も安心して出かける事ができます。一方であまり好きではないのは香港の人ごみ、空気の悪さ、湿度の高さ、そして文化の不足です。人ごみを避けるため仕事が終わった後や週末に出かけることは控えます。だいたい平日の間に人の少ないところに行って買い物をしたり、水泳をしたり、書店や図書館などを訪れたりしています。最近では、メルボルンやロンドン、あるいはベルリンのようにどこかヨーロッパの街で暮らしたいと望むようになりました。新鮮な体験と良いギャラリー、そしてゆっくりと落ち着ける場所が欲しいのです。香港はこうしたものを求め難い街です。どこへ行っても人が溢れていて、たとえ良い場所があっても落ち着くことができません。私は今、自分の創作に没頭するためのインスピレーションを欲しているのです。
香港で最も好きな場所を教えて下さい。
今私はクォリーベイ（鰂魚涌）で生活と仕事をしていますが、ここは退職者や祖父母くらいの比較的年齢の高い人たちが住んでいる街なのでとても気に入っています。近所に出かけて市場を歩き、近所の顔見知りと出会うのが大好きです。夜には公園を散歩して、ハイウェイの上に掛かる橋から港や九龍を眺めるのも素敵です。考え事をするのには一番の場所です。買い物に一番好きな場所は間違いなく「カポック」です。ここはまるでパリの「コレット」のような場所です。よい音楽やファッションアクセサリー、可愛くてクリエイティブな品物が揃っています。ここのオーナーと話すのも好きです。彼らは時々展示やパーティなども行っています。ここは時間を過ごしたり友達と会ったりするのにも良い場所です。私はここで、Tシャツのデザインを展示するという幸運にも恵まれました。

He is now focussing on the fashion and music industries to create unique design and illustrations.
Please tell us yourself and your recent activity.
I was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Sydney, Australia at the age of only 5 years old. I studied Fine art and then another school Graphic Design in Sydney. I then came back to Hong Kong after one year of work after graduation to see what the scene was like here. Besides designing and illustrator I am also a dj. My first dj gig was in 1988 in Sydney. Currently I have completed an 8 page illustration project for Cartier and an exclusive work for the magazine on the theme Youth. I have also created a motion graphics promotional video piece opening of the DG “100%HKDesigns” Beijing store.
Please tell us about your city, and how about living in your city for yourself/activity.
It’s a love and hate relationship for me living in Hong Kong. The good things are obviously convenience and everything here is new and up to date. This is what I like about the city. Its also very safe to go out at night compared to other cities which I take it for granted until I get to another city. What I don’t like about HK are the crowds, the bad air, the high humidity and the lack of culture here. I tend to avoid after work hours and weekends to go out. I usually try to sneak out during week days where there are less people and do my shopping, swim, visiting bookshops, library etc. Just recently I have been dreaming to live elsewhere like Melbourne, London or to one of the cities in Europe like Berlin. I want a fresh experience, good art galleries and chilled places to hang out. HK is hard to do those things because every place overpopulated with people, even the good places its hard to unwind. I hunger for inspiration to help me stay focused on my own work.
Please tell us a favourite place in the city you live and work in.
I currently live and work in Quarry Bay. I quite like this district as there are more older population living here, like retirees and grand parents. I love to go down and walk past the markets and see familiar faces in the neighborhood. I love to take a stroll at night to the park, a bridge over the highway leads to a lookout to the Harbor and Kowloon. It is my favorite place to reflect. My favorite place to shop is definitely Kapok, which is like a Colette in Hong Kong. It sells good music, fashion accessories, and cute creative nick knacks. I like talking to the owner and they have occasional exhibition and opening parties. It’s a nice place to hang out and catch up with friends too. I was lucky enough to exhibit in this store for a t-shirt design.
