Simon Lee Gallery was founded in 2002 in Mayfair, London. Since then it has been one of the leading galleries for contemporary art in Europe. It widely represents some of the most important contemporary artists such as Larry Clark, Bernard Frizeサイモン・リー・ギャラリーは2002年ロンドンのメイフェアに設立され、以来ヨーロッパの主要な現代アートギャラリーとして活動してきた。同ギャラリーはラリー・クラーク、ベルナルド・フリズ、クリストファー・ウール等の有名現代アーティストから、新しく注目される若い世代のジョセフィン・プリードやアンジェラ・ブロック等のアーティストまで幅広く扱う。
2012年春、そのサイモン・リー・ギャラリーが海外初の拠点を、世界有数のギャラリーがアジアにおけるハブとして集結する香港のペダービルにオープンした。サイモン・リー・ギャラリーはコの字型のスペースで、訪れる人を数歩毎に新しい作品へ導く。さらに天井のほぼ全面をカバーした照明からふりそそぐ光が、空間の曇りない白さを強調している。
アートバーゼル香港に参加した同ギャラリーは、マニー・ウェーバー「丸太夫人と汚れたうさぎ」という、人間と等身大のうさぎが、女性が彫り込まれた丸太に腰掛けているインスタレーションを展示し注目を集めた。前述のように幅広い世代のアーティストを取り扱うことはもちろん、絵画だけにとどまらず彫刻や映像、写真等をダイナミックな企画力で展開していくのが同ギャラリーの持ち味である。それらは私達に現代アートの手法や思考がシフトしていく様子を知る機会を与えてくれるものであり、同ギャラリーは今後よりローカル及びアジアアートシーンへの影響力を高めていくだろう。

In the spring 2012, it opened its first overseas platform in Hong Kong, at the Pedder building where the world’s big-name galleries gather as their hubs in Asia. Simon Lee Gallery Hongkong, with its U-shaped space, guides a visitor to encounter the artworks after his few steps. The light beam showers from the wide part of ceiling to emphasize their pure white space.
At Art Basel Hong Kong 2013, Simon gallery drew many people’s attention with the artwork “Log Lady and Dirty Bunny” by Marnie Weber, the installation of human-size bunny sitting on a log that a lady is engraved. The gallery hosts programs of a wide range of artist as mentioned above. What makes this gallery distinctive is their dynamic directorship which features from sculpture and painting to film and photography, etc. Their both solo and group shows aim to give us the opportunity to learn shifts in contemporary art practice and thought. Simon Lee Gallery will definitely enhance its influence on local and Asian art scene.
