Gagosian Gallery is a leading international contemporary art gallery with twelve exhibition spaces in New York, Los Angeles, London, Rome, Athens, Paris, Geneva and Hong Kong. Established by Larry Gagosian in 1980, ガゴシアンはニューヨーク、ロサンゼルス、ロンドン、ローマ、アテネ、ジュネーブ、パリ、そしてここ香港に拠点をもつコンテンポラリーアートギャラリーの先駆け的存在である。1980年にラリー・ガゴシアンによって設立され、世界一パワフルな現代アートとコンテンポラリーアートのギャラリーだと広く認識されている。2011年1月、世界で11カ所目そしてアジアでは初となるギャラリーを香港にオープンさせた。
香港のガゴシアン・ギャラリーは、ダミアン・ハーストの個展「Forgotten Promises」（フォーガッテン・プロミセズ）と共にオープンした。ギャラリーが位置するのはセントラルのビジネス街にある、1924年に建てられたペダービルの７階。戦前の植民地時代の名残として上品な風格を携えている。ギャラリーはロンドンを拠点に活動するデザイナー、カルソ・セント・ジョンによる設計で145坪の広々とした空間が広がっている。
オープン以来、このギャラリーで個展が開催された有名アーティストは、アンドレアス・グリスキー、ダミアン・ハースト、村上隆、リチャード・プリンス、曾梵志（ツェン・ファンツィ）、さらに巨匠ロイ・リキテンスタインやサイ・トゥオンブリー等。2012年8月に開催されたサイ・トゥオンブリーの「The Last Paintings」（ザ・ラスト・ペインティングズ）、また同年11月下旬に開催された村上隆「Flowers & Skulls」（フラワーズ&スカルズ）には香港だけでなくアジアの他の国からもアート愛好者が訪れた。この国際的なコンテンポラリーアートギャラリーの今後の展覧会スケジュールに注目したい。

Text: Kanae Tamase Gagosian is widely considered as the most powerful international art gallery for modern and contemporary art, and in January 2011, it opened its eleventh location, and its first space in Asia, in Hong Kong.
Gagosian Gallery inaugurated its Hong Kong space with a solo exhibition by Damien Hirst, titled, “Forgotten Promises”. Gagosian Gallery Hong Kong is located on the seventh floor of Pedder Building, an iconic building that was built in 1923. The elegant stone building is in fact the last remaining example of pre-war colonial architecture in the city’s Central Business district. The gallery spans 5,200 square feet, and was designed by London-based architects, Caruso St John.
Since it opened, Gagosian Hong Kong has hosted major solo exhibitions with some of the world’s most important living artists, including Andreas Gursky, Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Richard Prince, and Zeng Fanzhi, as well as Contemporary masters including Roy Lichtenstein and Cy Twombly. Thousands of art-lovers from Hong Kong and from around Asia visited “Cy Twombly: The Last Paintings” in August 2012, and also “Flowers & Skulls” by Takashi Murakami, which opened in late November the same year. We should definitely keep our eyes on the upcoming exhibition schedule at this leading international contemporary art gallery.
