One of the charms of Helsinki is that unlike most big cities where the city centres are dominated by the most expensive brands and big shops, Helsinki city centre allows you to find the work of original designers多くの大都市の中心部には高級なブランドや大型のショッピング施設ばかりだが、ヘルシンキの良いところは、中心部を歩いていると、地元のデザイナーの作品に出会うことができることだ。広い通りと低い建物で有名なヘルシンキは、中心部からどこに行くのにもとても便利だ。美味しいコーヒーを飲むには一年中どの季節もいいが、なんといってもフィンランドの寒い冬がぴったりだ。72％のアートと28％のコーヒーをコンセプトにした素敵なショップ「ローカル」では、アートとデザインと共にホットドリンクを楽しむために、リラックスした雰囲気が演出されている。
オーナーはフリーのフォトグラファーとして活動し、ローカルに情熱を注いでいるカーチャ・ハーゲルスタム。お店でカーチャ自身や、彼女の作品に出会うことができるのはごく稀だが、ローカルには多くの本があり、その中の１冊にはカーチャ監修の、ワールド・デザイン・キャピタル2012のヘルシンキでの開催を記念してリリースされ、フィンランドを代表するデザイナーやアーティストの20のインタビューが、彼女の写真と共に収められている「20+12 Design Stories from Helsinki」もある。カーチャはフィンランドのアートとデザインに強い情熱を注いでおり、その情熱を伝えることができるようギャラリーのスペースを最大限に生かすことのできるレイアウトでゲストを迎える。
ローカルは、毎月の新しい展示のために店内の空間自体を変えてしまう。前に訪れた際に座った椅子やテーブルは次に訪れるときにはもうない、なんていうこともありえるのだ。いつも違った雰囲気を見せるダイナミックなギャラリーだが、いつ行ってもいつもと変わらず美味しいコーヒーを楽しむことができる。

Text: Mike Sullivan after just a few minutes’ walk. This city is famous for its wide streets and short buildings, as well as the convenience of the centre which makes everything very easy to reach. At any time of the year it is nice to have a good coffee, but during the very cold Finnish winter it is even more important. Lokal is a beautiful store with the concept of 72% art and 28% coffee; it combines a relaxing atmosphere for enjoying a hot drink with art and design.
The owner, Katja Hagelstam, is a freelance photographer herself with a clear passion for Lokal and it isn’t often that you can meet the owner of a shop and see her work on the walls alongside other artists. The books in Lokal include “20+12 Design Stories from Helsinki“; it was made in celebration of Helsinki’s status as World Design Capital 2012 and includes photos by Katja throughout the book. She has such a clear passion for Finnish art and design that it becomes infectious, and it shows in the layout of the store which makes the best use of the space available.
Every month the store closes and is reconfigured according to the latest exhibition, which means the table and chairs you might use one time won’t be there when you go to visit again. It makes Lokal a truly dynamic place with an ever changing look, but with always the same great coffee.
