On a visit to Helsinki while chatting to an art gallery owner the name Osma Harvilahti popped up, his work was described asヘルシンキのギャラリーのオーナーと話しをしていたあるとき、オスマ・ハヴィラティというカメラマンの名前が挙がった。ヘルシンキを拠点に活動する若いフォトグラファーが生み出す生き生きとした作品はたちまち有名になり、フィンランド国内のみならず、世界中から注目を集めている。イギリスのクライアントにはBBC（イギリス放送局）、フィンランドではマリメッコのようなブランドや国際的に有名なノキアなどをクライアントに持つ。彼の学歴はほかのアーティストとは少し違っており、カメラマンとしてキャリアを磨きながら、ヘルシンキ大学で社会学とメディア専攻を卒業した。野心的な彼の個性がよく現れた作品は、おぼろげな夢のようで、優美だと表現されることが多い。フィンランドの新星であり、これからは世界の新星へと進化を続けている。
最近どんなプロジェクトを取り組んでいますか？
最近はたくさん旅行へ出掛けたり、プライベートや仕事の撮影をしていました。次のプロジェクトは日本へ行き、才能あふれる日本アーティストたちと仕事をすること、そして個人的にいろいろな撮影をしたいと思っています。最近の仕事の撮影では、ノキア、ナウネス、モノクルマガジン、インベントリー、プリンテッドページズマガジンなどの撮影をしました。
作品は非常に自然な印象でありながら、おぼろげな夢の中のような雰囲気も併せ持っていますね。このような対照的なコンセプトをどのように扱っているのですか？
たぶん実際のものとアレンジされた架空上のものとを組み合わせを表現しているのだと思います。ときどき自分が見た瞬間を再現しようとするのですが、なかなかうまくできません。僕にとっては、見る人がそれがどこで撮影されたのかわからない作品や完全にアレンジされた作品であるということが重要なポイントになります。
撮影用に使用しているカメラ、個人的な旅用のカメラには何を使用していますか？
いつもはキャノン5D MarkIIの24-70mm4.0レンズ（早くて簡単）か、ハッセルブラッドH5D（大きくてかさばるけれどきれいにしっかり）のどちらかを使用しています。旅行のときは、マミヤ645 PROを80mm 1.9のレンズをつけて使用します。ほとんどの個人的な撮影はこの組み合わせです。
ヘルシンキのどんな所が好きですか？
ヘルシンキの街が本当に小さいという部分が気に入っています。街を気軽に動き回ることができるし、とても純粋な街です。大きな混雑もありませんし自然がごく身近にあります。ヘルシンキはますます面白くなっていて、新しい雰囲気の良いレストランやほかの新しいスポットが多くオープンしています。とてもオープンで、親しみの持てる、小旅行にぴったりの街だと思います。
ヘルシンキのお気に入りの場所を教えてください。
アンット・メラスニエミが経営しているいくつかのレストランがお気に入りです。クールナは昔からずっと好きですが、比較的新しいレストランでランチがおいしいケッロハッリやビールやピザが最高のプッテスという系列レストランも好きになりました。また近年のカリオ地区は、様々な魅力的な場所がなんでも揃っているエリアになってきていて、ハメーンティという通りの近くにはシルタネン、クーデス・リンヤ、カイクなどのナイトスポットが集まっています。アート鑑賞には カーペリテフダスにある、写真美術館が面白いと思います。そのあたりは散歩にも適した綺麗な街並みが続いています。
Text: Mike Sullivan exciting and it quickly became apparent that this young photographer based in Helsinki was quickly making his name known not just in Finland but also in the world. In the UK his clients include the BBC (a major British broadcaster) and in his home country he has worked with the world famous Marimekko brand as well as the other internationally famous company from Finland, Nokia. His background is a little different from other artists, he graduated from the University of Helsinki in Sociology and media while at the same time as developing his career as a photographer. His work has been described as dreamlike and ethereal while his personality reflects a man with a lot of ambition, he is a rising star in Finland and is well on his way to becoming a rising star of the world.
What photography projects have you been working on recently ?
Recently I’ve spent a lot of time traveling and shooting both personal and assigned work. My next bigger project is traveling to Japan and working with some Japanese talents as well as shooting new personal material. Some of my recent commercial/assigned shoots include clients like Nokia, Nowness, Monocle Magazine, Inventory and Printed Pages magazine.
Your work has consisted of settings which are very natural, yet at times very dreamlike. How do you manage to work with such contrasting concepts ?
Well I suppose I’m looking to combine documentary material with more arranged and imaginary ingredients. Sometimes I reproduce moments and things I’ve seen but wasn’t able to capture. Still it’s very important for me to create pictures where the viewer isn’t completely sure whether it’s a snapshot or something completely arranged.
What is your choice of camera for a planned shoot, or just for spontaneous photos when traveling ?
I usually work with either a Canon 5D mk2 with a 24-70 4.0 zoom (quick and easy) or Hasselblad H5D (large and bulky but nice and firm to shoot with). During my travels I carry my Mamiya 645 PRO with a 80mm 1.9 lens attached to it. Most of my personal work is shot with this combination.
Could you tell us about Helsinki? What do you like about it ?
I like the fact that Helsinki is really small. It’s effortless to move around and it’s clean if that’s something you like. There’s no big crowds and we live right by the nature. I feel it’s getting more and more interesting, there’s a lot of nice new restaurants and different venues for people. It’s also getting more open and more easily approachable for people to visit.
Please give us your recommendations for visiting in Helsinki.
Many of my favourite restaurants are owned by the same guy: Antto Melasniemi. Kuurna has been a long time favourite for years but there’s some new casual places like Kellohalli (great lunch) and Putte’s (nice pizza and beer). Kallio is becoming a more versatile place for going out and there’s a nice bunch of places located close to each other on Hämeentie such as Siltanen, Kuudes Linja and Kaiku. For art etc you might want to visit Kaapelitehdas with the Photography Museum and there’s also a pretty nice walk around that area.
