大浦天主堂Oura Roman Catholic Church

Neighboring to the Glover Garden and known as one of the popular tourist spots in Nagasaki, Oura Roman Catholic Church is a wooden gothic church designated a national treasure「グラバー園」とも隣接し、長崎の代表的観光名所の一つとなっている「大浦天主堂」は、国宝にも指定されている木造ゴシック様式の教会。1865年、禁教令下でありながら隠れキリシタンが発見された場所としても知られている。
大浦天主堂の正式名称は「日本二十六聖殉教者天主堂」であり、1597年に殉教した日本二十六聖人たちに捧げられたもの。それゆえ、天主堂自体が殉教地である西坂の丘に向けて建てられている。
元々は1864年にフランス人のプチジャン神父らによって建設されたが、原爆により大きな被害を受けたために1952年に修復されている。1953年には日本最古の教会堂として、また洋風建築としては初の国宝に指定されている。
ゴシック様式の教会内はステンドグラスが美しく、外からの明るい光が入り込み、荘重な雰囲気が流れている。また外壁はレンガ造りだが表面は漆喰で白く塗られており、青空の中に突き出した尖塔がとても印象的である。
外国人神父が設計し、経験を積んだ日本人棟梁が建築するという形式で作り上げられたこの教会堂。改築されてはいるものの、恐らく当時この教会堂を目にした日本人に与えたであろう大きな印象を、訪れる人々にも十分に伝えてくれるであろう。

The official name of Oura Roman Catholic Church is the Church of the 26 Japanese Martyrs, which was dedicated for 26 Martyrs of Japan in 1597. Because of it, the church is built towards the hill of Nishizaka where is known as a place for the Martyrs.
Originally designed by the French priest Bernard Petijean and others in 1864, the church was damaged badly by the atomic bomb and was refurbished in 1952. In 1953, the church as designated a national treasure as first western-style building and as an oldest church in Japan.
Inside the gothic style church, the beautiful stained glass let bright sun light into the space, making a majestic atmosphere. The exterior wall is made of bricks, and the surface of the wall is plastered, that makes an imposing view of steeple sticking out to the blue sky.
Designed by the foreign priest and constructed by the well-experienced Japanese master carpenters, the church will give the same impression to visitors as the Japanese at that time once received.
