グラバー園Glover Garden
Glover Garden is one of the popular tourist spots, where Thomas Blake Glover who has travelled from Scotland built his house on the Minami Yamate Hill in 1863長崎の代表的観光名所となっている「グラバー園」。スコットランドから渡来してきたトーマス･ブレーク･グラバーが1863年、南山手の丘に建設した住宅を筆頭に、日本の産業に大きな貢献を果たした外国人貿易商の邸宅や庭園を移築復元し公開している。
その当時、長崎には多くの異国の商人や幕末の志士たちが集まっていたといい、園内には当時の趣を湛える品々が展示されている。またグラバーは伊藤博文らの英国留学を手伝い、さらに倒幕派の武士達とも交流があり、多くの援助を行ったという。
旧グラバー住宅は日本最古の木造西洋風建築で、旧リンガー住宅、旧オルト住宅と共に国指定重要文化財に指定されている。旧ウォーカー住宅にはイギリス人実業家、ロバート･ネール･ウォーカーの次男が暮らしていたが、ロバートはグラバーと共に「キリンビール」の前身となる「ジャパン・ブルワリ･カンパニー」を設立している。
他にも、幕末の武士たちが出入りしていたという隠し部屋や、日本初の西洋料理レストランとなった建物などが残っている。また園内にはハートの形をした敷石が２つある。これを見つけると恋が叶うという言い伝えがあり、一つは旧グラバー住宅の庭の方位盤の下にあるという。
「グラバー園」自体が斜面上にあるため、園内の高低差は大きく、散策コースは最も高い場所から低い場所へと見て廻る様になっている。しかし歩く歩道や車椅子用スロープが設置されているので、気軽に園内を見てまわることができる。
園内では、長崎を舞台にした歌劇「マダム・バタフライ（蝶々夫人）」に関連したコンサートなどの様々な催し物も行われている。また高台という立地ゆえ、長崎市一体を見渡せる眺めはとても素晴らしく、夏の間は夜間開園も行っている。

It is known that there has gathered many foreign merchants and nationalists of the end of Edo Period at the time in Nagasaki. In the garden there are many items showcasing that tells the old story.
The former Glover House is the oldest western wooden architecture in Japan, and with the former Ringer House and former Alt House together, the house is designated as a national important cultural property. The son of the British Robert Neill Walker once lived in the former Walker House. Robert and Glover co-established Japan Brewery Company, the predecessor of Kirin Beer.
Besides Western houses, there remains buildings that have secret compartment for Samurais at the end of Edo era and a building that was used for the first Western cuisine restaurant in Japan.
As the Glover Garden is located on the hill, you will walk from the high place down to the lower area in the site. There are moving walkway and slopes for wheelchairs.
In the garden, they offer various events such as a concert that relates to the opera “Madama Butterfly” which set in Nagasaki. Because of its location, you will enjoy fantastic panoramic view of the Nagasaki city. During summer, they open until late at night.
