A simple building with a big opening in the center part and has the distinctive feature of its presence in Tenjin is a head office building of Fukuoka Bank, designed by an architect Kisho Kurokawa福岡の中心地、天神に独特の存在感を放つビルがある。一切の無駄な装飾を排除し、中央に大きな開口部を持つミニマルな建物は、建築家・黒川紀章（1934〜2007年）の設計による福岡銀行本店だ。存在感を持ちながらも、それを示しすぎないという銀行の象徴性を表現した、無機質な花崗岩の外観も重厚感と品格を醸し出している。

ビル中央の開口部は、公共空間として彫刻や植栽、水盤、ベンチが配され一般に開放されている。また、地下には大ホール（775席）があり、クラシック音楽などのイベントが定期的に開催されており、「内部と外部の共生」あるいは「公共空間と私的」という黒川の意図した中間体としての機能をもった文化施設としても活用されている。

1960年代から本格的に建築家としてのキャリアをスタートした黒川は、クアラルンプール国際空港（1998年）や、ゴッホ美術館（1999年）、国立新美術館（2006年）などを手掛けたことでも知られ、数々の建築賞も受賞している世界的な建築家のひとり。
1975年に竣工した福岡銀行本店は、現存する稀少な黒川の初期の代表作のひとつだ。

黒川紀章の建築は、福岡では他にもウォーターフロント・百道（ももち）の「世界の建築家街並みゾーン」という、磯崎新プロデュースによる世界的有名建築家のマンション群のひとつとして、1989年に竣工した建物を見ることができる。このプロジェクトには、葉祥栄、スタンリー・タイガーマン、マイケル・グレイヴスらが参加している。

福岡銀行本店が位置する天神の一画は、周辺建物の老朽化や地域活性化による大型再開発の計画が幾度となく立ち上がっているエリア。生前から都市計画の提案を積極的に行い、晩年の2007年に選挙にも出馬し日本の将来を案じていた黒川のこれらの建築物が今後どうなっていくのか興味深い。

As Kurokawa said, “This kind of intermediate space between exterior and interior or between private and public has its roots in traditional Japanese architecture, Engawa”, the center space of the opening is open for public, people can enjoy sculptures, plants and relaxing at the benches. There is a big hall (775 seats) in the basement, offering events like classic music concerts.

Built in 1975, the building for Fukuoka Bank is one of Kurokawa’s earlier works. Kurokawa is one of the notable international architect among others. His works include Kuala Lumpur International Airpot (1998), Van Gogh Museum (1999), The National Art Center, Tokyo (2006).

In Fukuoka Kurokawa’s work can be seen on one of the apartment building built in 1989 in Seaside Momochi. Other architects who has participated in the projects are Stanley Tigerman, Michael Graves, and Shoei Yoh.

There are several urban planning going on surrounding area for the local revitalization and because of aging of buildings.
