日本二十六聖人記念館26 Martyrs Museum
Nishizaka Park is located on the hilltop in Nishizaka-cho Nagasaki and is a place where 6 propagators and 20 Japanese believers were martyred in 1597長崎県長崎市西坂町の高台に広がる西坂公園は、1597年に宣教師6人と日本人信徒20人が殉教した地。彼らは豊臣秀吉の命令により京都で捕縛され、徒歩で西坂の地へと連れてこられ処刑された。それから約四百年後の1962年、彼らが26聖人として列聖されて百周年となる記念の年に、日本二十六聖人記念館、聖堂および記念碑が建設された。
公園内に建つ26人が一列に並び祈りを捧げる等身大の像は、自らもカトリック教徒であった彫刻家舟越保武（1912〜2002年）の手によるもの。公園全体を見渡すように建っているその記念碑は、まさに西坂公園一体を象徴する存在となっている。
記念館は碑の裏側にひっそりと佇んでおり、館内にはステンドグラスから光が差し込み厳かな雰囲気が流れている。この資料館には26聖人に関する資料や遺品のほか、国内外から集められたキリスト教関連の15世紀にまで遡る書簡や聖像、遺品などを通して当時の日本でのキリスト教布教の様子や信徒達の日常を垣間見る事ができる。
さらに2階にある「栄光の間」は、あたかも教会内部のようなつくりとなっており、中心にある祭壇には26聖人の遺骨が納められている。
また、道路を隔てて隣接する聖フィリッポ教会へは自由に入ることができ、定期的にミサも開催されている。この教会は、26聖人の内の一人である最初のメキシコ人殉教者にちなんで名づけられた。教会から聳え立つ2つの塔は高さ16メートルあり、アントニオ・ガウディの建築を思わせる外観は、長崎市のランドマークのひとつとなっている。
記念館及び教会は、共に今井兼次（1895〜1987年）の設計である。
豊臣秀吉から徳川時代に続く専制政治の下で、日本で殉教したキリシタンの数は二十五万人に上るといわれている。そのうち、西坂殉教地とその付近で殉教した人々の数は記録に残ったものだけでも六百数十名に達している。展示された遺品や資料から、当時の彼らの想いが伝わってくるようである。

Text: Yuki Mine. They were arrested in Kyoto by an order of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, and were brought on foot to the place of Nishizaka and executed. About 400 years later, in 1962, at the year of 100th anniversary for the 26 saints, the Twenty Six Martyrs Museum was built along with Mermorial Church and Monument.
Designed by a Catholic sculptor Yasutake Funakoshi (1912-2002), the life-sized 26 praying statues were displayed in one line in the park. The monument exists as a symbol around the area of Nishizaka Park.
Built behind the monument, the Museum showcases documents and momentos regarding 26 saints, letters and saint statues collected worldwide dating back to the 15th century that give a glimpse of the Christianity propabation back then in Japan.
Across the road, you can visit Twenty Six Martyrs Memorial St. Philip Church that is named after a Mexican martyr who was one of the 26 saints. The 2 towers soaring from the church have 16-meter hight and the church becomes one of the landmarks in Nagasaki. The museum and church was designed by Kenji Imai (1895-1987).
