The expensive firework display that accompanied the opening of the world’s tallest building on January 4, 2010, flew in the face of rumours that Dubai was bankrupt following a debt crisis at the end of 20092010年1月4日に世界一番高いビルのオープニングに伴った豪華な花火によるセレモニーは、2009年末に発生したドバイ・ショックの噂を翻した。
工事期間中、「ブルジュ・ドバイ」として知られていた高さ828mのこの塔は、アブダビ首長国の首長でアラブ首長国連邦の大統領であるシェイク・ハリファ・ビン＝サーイド・アール＝ナヒヤーンにちなみ、オープニングの当日に「ブルジュ・ハリファ」と改名された。落成の２週間前に、アブダビ首長国は債務返済のための100億ドルをドバイに支援したのだ。
近くから見上げる、塔の驚異的な160階の高さは、旅行者の首に痛みを引き起こさせている。ビルのデザインに取り組んだ建築家、エイドリアン・スミスは地方新聞の「ガルフニュース」にUAE現地の植物であるヒメノカリスが塔の主要なインスピレーションになっていると話す。塔はガラスとスチールから構成されているが、それでもスミスは「オーガニックな性質」を持たせたという。
2010年2月には、塔の下層フロアーには内装も手掛けたアルマーニの高級マンションと世界初の「アルマーニ・ホテル」がオープン予定だ。世界一速いエレベーターは最高速度時速64kmで60秒以内に124階の世界一高い展望台「アット・ザ・トップ」へと乗客を運ぶ。
オープニングの直後、14人の乗客を乗せたエレベーターが展望台への道半ば400mの高さで１時間近く立ち往生した。この事故にもかかわらずオープニングからの数週間たった今も、塔に上がるのを待つ列はそれでも非常に長い。
展望台へ登るには、事前の予約チケット（100ディルハム）をおすすめしたい。時は金なりであると考えている人には、当日券（400ディルハム）も利用可能。

Known up during its construction as the Burj Dubai, the 828 metre tower was renamed Burj Khalifa on its day of opening as a tribute to Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of neighbouring Abu Dhabi and president of the UAE. Two weeks before, Abu Dhabi has lent Dubai $10 billion to pay off its debts.
The astonishing 160 floors of the tower have been known to induce neck-ache in tourists when seen from up close. Adrian Smith, the architect who worked on the building design told local paper Gulf News that Hymeocallis – a local plant in the UAE is the key inspiration of the tower. Despite being built out of glass and steel, Smith believes that the tower still has “an organic quality”.
In Febuary 2010, Armani Residences and Hotel which are located at lower floors of the tower will open the door to its guests. The world’s fastest lift carries tourists at a rate of 64 km/h to the 124th floor observation deck ‘At The Top’ in less than 60 seconds – although not always.
Just after its opening, the lift carrying 14 visitors got stuck half way to the deck at 400 meter high for an hour. Despite the accident, in the weeks following the opening queues for going up the tower were still very long.
Booking the ticket (100dhs) in advance is highly recommended. Those who consider time is money, fast track ticket are also available at 400dhs.
