あなたのバックグラウンドを教えてください。
私の両親が1974年にモザンビークからポルトガルへ移住してきた時、父が不動産の仕事を始めました。なので、父のオフィスで建造物の絵や青写真をみて育ちました。ポルトガルの建設ブームの間にそのビジネスが活気付いていくのも目の当たりにしました。
夏休みの間はよく設計図や調査書類で囲まれた父のオフィスで過ごしました。あとは、両親と一緒に旅行もしました。私の兄弟が土木技師として働いていて、建設のことや設計を話すことはいつも夕食の時の楽しみでした。
母はインドで生まれで、とてもクリエイティブでアーティスティックな人でした。それが私のデザインへの興味に火をつけました。自然とデザインや建築の分野へ手をつけるようになり、本格的な学習へ結びついていきました。著名な建築家たちで知られるポルトガルで生まれ育ち、学生時代にはすでに興味津々でした。
技術を磨くため、そして実寸大の建築物を制作する心の準備をしていくために、デルフト技術大学とイスタンブール工科大学へ通いました。たくさんの講義とスケッチに費やした時間がアイディアを保ちながらそれを視覚化していく方法を鍛えてくれました。
卒業してから数年間ほど建築家として働きましたが、その後インテリアデザインの勉強をする決意をしました。建築家として学んだ技術をさらに向上させるため、ニューヨーク大学に通いました。これによって、デザインと建築を包括的に取りこむことができるようになりました。
あらゆるプロジェクトにおいて大切にしている哲学などはありますか？
私にとって、良いデザインとはひとえに結果とは言い切れません。なぜなら根本的なものは過程にあるからです。デザインや設計のプロセスの動機というのは、それをみて経験する人に対する感情的な影響です。
私がそれを踏まえて、限られた時間と予算の中で達成することができれば全ての過程がうまくいきます。
細部にまで渡る計画ができた時に、クライアントとプロジェクトに関わる全ての人との強い関係性を保ち、定期的な管理・調査、そして信頼できる業者を確保し、総合的にプロジェクトを進めることができます。
あと、意欲のあるデザイナーたちはその時々で違ったものを作りたがりますが、私のモチベーションはそれとは違います。私のデザインを通して時間に左右されない優美さをあらゆる場所で表現することが私のモチベーションです。
これまで手がけてきたプロジェクトの中で、一番気に入っているものを教えてください。
どのプロジェクトも計画段階からデザインし、完成を見届けてきたので、何か一つを決めるのは難しいです。それぞれに同等の量の時間と努力、創造力を費やしてきました。全てが私のお気に入りです。自然と、今までやってきたあらゆるプロジェクトを思い返すと興奮してしまいます。
より記憶に残っているプロジェクトはあると思います。それはコンセプトにおけるオリジナリティーによります。それで言えば、子どものための美術館や遊び場を設計したドバイのオリオリのプロジェクトは記憶に残っています。
ドバイであなたの作品が見れるところを教えてください。
私たちのアトリエはドバイであらゆる種類のプロジェクトを成し遂げてきました。住宅だとドバイ国際金融センターにあるブリダマン・アパートやパームのビラなどで、どちらも地方と国際コンペで最優秀賞をいただきました。バンヤンツリー・レジデンスはこれから取り掛かるプロジェクトで、ショー・アパートメントというコンセプトを元にしていこうと思っています。
オリオリとラ・プチ・ツリーハウス・カフェはもうご存知かと思いますが、どちらもアル・クオズにあります。また、ドバイ・ホールディングの経営オフィスやドバイモールのマスカ・ラップなどの商業施設の制作も行ってきました。ドバイだけではなく、ポルトガル、オマーン、ロスでも見ることができます。
ドバイでの暮らしについて教えてください。
この仕事をする上で特に良い点は、毎日が特別な日であるというところです。毎朝、午後からのミーティングのために設計やコンセプトを作成します。私は早起きなので、生産的にこの時間を活用しています。
ドバイは、５ケ月間天候に恵まれるので、海辺の散歩やアウトドアを楽しみます。
都市はバラエティに富んでいて、人工的なランドスケープを見ることができますし、そこから少し離れ旧市街へ出れば都市の喧騒から離れリラックスすることもできます。
ドバイでおすすめのスポットを紹介してください。
ドバイは、ブルジュ・ハリファをはじめ、数多くの工学的な建築群があります。建築に興味があれば、ザハ・ハディドが手がけたオーパス・タワーや、フォスター・アンド・パートナーズが手がけたドバイモール内のアップルストアにも是非訪れてみてください。ドバイ国際金融センターのインデックス・タワーには、良いレストランやアート・ギャラリーがあります。
特におすすめしたいのは、OMAがリノベーションを手がけたアル・クオズのアルサーカル芸術地区で、人気のショップやカフェがあります。
アル・バスタキヤは伝統的建物を保存した歴史地区で、昔ながらの風の塔を持つや黄土色の建造物郡を見ることができる旧市街で、アラビアン・ティー・ハウスやXVAギャラリーでコーヒーを飲むのもおすすめです。

Translation: Hanae KawaiEvery great artist has an inspiring backstory. What’s yours?
When my parents immigrated to Portugal from Mozambique in 1974, my father started out his business in the field of real estate and property development. Therefore, while growing up, I’d see drawings and blueprints of buildings in my father’s office. I watched them come to life on site during the construction boom in Portugal.
I would often spend my summer break between my father’s office surrounded by plans, construction details, and site visits. Moreover, I travelled to exotic places with my parents. My brother works as a civil engineer so discussing construction and building plans were always the plat du jour at dinnertime.
My mother, who was born in India, is very creative and has an artistic side to her and it piqued my interest in design. Naturally, I was drawn towards the field of design and architecture; making it my intrinsic choice for further studies. Born and raised in Porto, a city known for its architectural geniuses, I was curious during my school days.
To develop my skills and prepare my mind for creating life-sized structures on site, I took up courses at Delft University of Technology and Istanbul Technical University. With numerous lectures and hours of sketching came knowledge of how a vision is created while supporting an idea.
Once I had graduated, I was working as an architect until a few years later, I made a decision to take up an interior design course. I studied interior design at New York University to add greater value to the skills I had learned as an architect; this way I’d be able to work on design and architecture in a way that’s all encompassing and holistic.
Do you have a philosophy that you adopt for most of your projects?
To me, great design is not solely about the outcome, because the essence lies in the process. A motivating aspect of the design and build process is the emotional impact that it will have on people who will see and experience it. When I think about that and how I was able to achieve it within a fixed time and budget, the entire process becomes successful.
When it comes down to the logistics, we have a comprehensive approach of having intense interaction with the clients and everybody involved in the project and its execution with constant supervision of work as well as a discerning selection of contractors.
Moreover, any motivated designer would want to create something distinct each time but my motivation is something else. The chance to radiate an attitude of timeless elegance through my designs, across the region, and throughout the world is my motivation.
Out of all the projects you’ve completed, which one would you call your favorite?
I designed and watched all my projects be built from scratch, I hardly think that I can choose just one. I have invested an equal amount of time, effort and ingenuity in each one; they’re all my favorites. That said, I naturally do have a sense of excitement for whatever project I complete.
I do think that some of my projects are quite memorable, because of their originality, in terms of concept. Based on this, I think that OliOli in Dubai, which is a children’s museum and educational play space in Dubai is quite memorable.
Where can our readers see your work in Dubai?
The Atelier has completed a number of different kinds of projects in Dubai. Some of them are residential, such as the Burj Daman Apartment in DIFC and a villa in the Palm, both of which won the award for best residential projects in local and international platforms. In addition, Banyan Tree residencies is an upcoming residential project for which we conceptualized the show apartment..
You already know about OliOli and La Petite Treehouse Café, both of which are in Al Quoz. We’ve also completed many commercial projects like Executive Offices for Dubai Holding and Maska Wraps in Dubai Mall. However, aside from Dubai, SDA has a global presence with projects in Portugal, Oman and Los Angeles.
Please tell us about your daily life in Dubai.
The best thing about this job is that there is no typical day. Each day is so different with coordination meetings, showroom visits, client meetings, or just focused on the drawing board. I usually spend the mornings working on plans and conceptual work and only schedule meetings for the afternoons. I am an early riser, so I am a lot more productive and inspired to work on spatial strategies during this time. Life in Dubai allows us to enjoy 5 months of great weather when I enjoy walks by the sea and being outdoors. The city presents an eclectic variety of urban landscape and I quite like visiting the old part of town once in a while to get away from the high-rise streets.
Please tell me about any good places for tourists, especially for people who are interested in architecture to visit in Dubai, UAE.
Dubai is well known for its ground breaking structures with engineering and architectural achievements. Obviously, Burj Khalifa would top the list as an attraction from SOM. We have the Index Tower in Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) area which has some of the best restaurants and art galleries, as well and the Apple store in Dubai Mall is worth a visit, both by Foster+Partners. The Opus Tower by Zaha Hadid architects is impressive. I highly recommend visiting AlSerkal Avenue, where you find warehouses converted into hip shops and cafes. Here we can find Concrete by OMA. Al Bastakiya quarter, in the old part pf Dubai is full of charm with ochre colored buildings and wind towers. I would recommend to stop at Arabian Tea House or XVA gallery for coffee.
