Although the UAE has boasted of bringing the Louvre to the Middle East, it’s oil and gas-rich rival country Qatar is not one to be beaten. The architect of the Louvre in Paris had already designed the Museum of Islamic Artルーブル美術館の建設を進めるアラブ首長国連邦は鼻が高いかもしれないが、石油とガス資源が豊かなライバル国カタールも負けてはいない。パリのルーブル美術館の設計で有名な建築家が、既にドーハに博物館を設計しているからだ。
中国系アメリカ人建築家のイオ・ミン・ペイは、これまでにルーブル美術館のガラスのピラミッドの設計などを手掛けており、過去に建築界のノーベル賞と言われるプリツカー賞の受賞経験も持つ。今回2008年に開館したこの博物館においても、目を引くブロック状の建物を造り上げた。
この博物館の設計を頼まれたペイは、当時90歳でイスラム文化をより理解しようと中東を旅した。そして、砂漠で生活する民族の上に燦然と輝く太陽の力を、建築に表現すべきだと考えたという。『この一見簡素な形の建物は太陽の光の中、影と陰影を得てこそ真の生命を獲得する。』というのが彼がこの建物に対して抱く構想だという。
また彼は外壁に使用する石をフランスから厳選し、幾何学的な外観の建物を造り出した。これは照りつける太陽と熱、飛んでくる塩分の多い海水を防ぐ役目を果たしている。
ペイが建物の外観設計の構想を練る一方で、カタール皇族は内部に展示する美術品をせっせと収集していた。王族であるアル＝サーニー家は、博物館の構想段階からロンドンのオークションに足繁く通い、イスラム美術の貴重な品々を集めてきた。そのため、多くの美術品は元の評価額の十倍の値段に跳ね上がったらしい。
中でも最も注目すべきなのは、７世紀末から８世紀初頭にかけてのコーランの写本。カタール皇族が開館までに費やした額は３億ドル以上。その高価美術コレクションはすべて無料で一般公開されている。

Translation: Yuki Mine in the capital city of Doha. Chinese-American architect, I.M. Pei, whose portfolio includes the legendary glass pyramid of the Louvre Paris, was responsible for the unique blocky museum which opened in 2008.
Pritzker Prize-winning Pei toured the Middle East at the age of 90 for an understanding of Islamic culture, before deciding that the design should reflect the influence of the sun on the desert-dwelling tribes of the region. Pei defines his design concept: “This severe architecture comes to life in the sun, with its shadows and shades of colour.”
The architect carefully selected Shamisen stones from France to build the geometrically designed building, to protect thoroughly against the harsh sun, the heat and the salt heavy sea water. While Pei was busy designing the museum’s exterior, the Qatari royal family were busy assembling the collection for the interior display.
The ruling al-Thani family made a habit of visiting London’s top auction houses while the building was still in the planning stages, to collect rare works of Islamic art. News of their visits reportedly pushed up artefacts to 10 times their original estimates.
A centrepiece of their efforts is one of the world’s oldest Quranic manuscripts, dating from the late 7th to the early 8th century. When the museum opened, the oil-rich family had spent over US$300 million on the collection, which is generously open to public to see free of charge.
