MACN – The Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales (Argentine Museum of Natural Science) is located in the neighbourhood of Villa Crespo, within Parque Centenario. It was created in 1823ブエノスアイレスのビージャ・クレスポ界隈近くに位置する、アルゼンチン自然科学博物館。センテナリオ公園の敷地内にあり、1823年に開館した。“自然史博物館をブエノスアイレスに”というベルナルディーノ・リバタビア元大統領の構想のもと、各地方から収蔵物が集められた。
当初はマンサーナ・デ・ラス・ルーチェス界隈とモンセラットのビル内に設置されたが、1937年に今日の場所に落ち着いた。現在の建物は、ヨーロッパ風の科学博物館が次々と建てられた時代のものだ。
著名なアルシド・ドルビニやフェルナンド・ラハイル、エドワルド・ラディスラオ・ホルムバーグたちは、博物館の展示室や研究施設で活躍してきた研究家だ。
博物館の収蔵品の中には異類な物もあったが、後にテーマごとに分類され、その収蔵品の一部を移動して、市内に新しい博物館も建設された。現在は150万もの収蔵品を抱えるまでになり、そのうち1割だけが展示されている。16部屋ある展示室は、古生物学、南極大陸、海底、軟体動物学、地学、植物学、節足動物、現代哺乳類に分類されている。
常設展のほか、写真展、絵画展、コンサートなど様々なジャンルの企画展が催されている。特に注目したいのが、学生向けのガイド付き見学だ。幼稚園から高校生までと幅広く対応しており、博物館の学芸員が案内してくれる。
建物もすばらしい。蝶から恐竜に至るまで様々な展示物を眺めながら広い展示室を歩けば、まるで違う時代の中にさまよい込んだような気分になってくる。博物館へは週末に行くのがオススメだ。建物の周りで市場が開かれるので、おもしろい物に出会えるかもしれない。

Translation: Chihiro Miyazaki and the inspiration of Bernardino Rivadavia, who invited the provinces to gather materials to ‘aid the establishment of a Natural History Museum in the Capital city,’ was what led to its creation.
The museum was first located in the Manzana de las Luces and some buildings of the Monserrat square, until it was finally set in 1937 in the building it occupies today, which was built according to the architectural cannons of the period for European science museums.
Renowned researchers such as Alcides d’Orbigny Fernando Lahille, L.Kraglievich, Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg, among others, have worked in its exhibition halls and laboratories. The museum collections comprised heterogeneous elements at first, which have afterwards been grouped thematically and separated to give birth to other museums in the capital city.
Nowadays, the museum holds over 1,500,000 pieces out of which only 10% are on display for the public to see. The pieces are divided into 16 exhibition halls corresponding among other areas to Palaeontology, Antarctica, Bottom of the Sea, Malacology, Geology, Botany, Arthropods and Present Day Mammals.
In addition to the permanent exhibition there are temporary exhibitions of photography and painting, concerts and scientific gatherings of different kinds. However, the most important of these exhibitions is the one related with school visits – from kindergarten to high-school level – which are guided by specialized personnel at the MACN.
The museum building is impressive: walking around its broad exhibition halls contemplating strange species ranging from butterflies to dinosaurs makes one feel in a different historical period. It is ideal to be visited at the weekend, when you should grab the opportunity to see the park surrounding it, where there is a street market with all sorts of things, which is ideal for curious people.
