Technically speaking, Galeria Guëmes is renowned not only as the oldest high-rise building in Buenos Aires, but also as the first reinforced concrete buildingブエノスアイレスで最も古い高層建築として、また初の鉄筋コンクリート建築として、技術面でも名高いガレリア・グエメスだが、その絢爛たるアールヌーボー様式の美観はブエノスアイレスの中心で格別の存在感を誇っている。
14階建てで高さ87ｍ、そして中心を通る116ｍものパッサージュはサンマルティン通りとフロリダ通りを繋いでいる。ブロンズとガラスで設計された二つの丸天井からは、今はショッピングモールになっている廊下に上品に空の光が注がれている。
1915年、イタリア人建築家フランシスコ・ジャノッティによって完成されたこのアールヌーボー建築は、ブエノスアイレスの歴史的文化遺産に登録されている。当時、地下に劇場とキャバレー、レストラン、サンマルティン通り沿いの塔には350もの事務室、フロリダ通り側に70のアパート、そして屋上には展望スペースにレストランを設けていた。また、当時にしてみればかなり高速のエレベーターを14基も設置するなど、近未来的なインパクトを与えていた。
現在は数々の有名店が並ぶショッピングモールになっているが、歩きながら丸天井の繊細な日差しや、通路の大理石に豪華に施された彫刻、エレベーターエントランスの荘厳な門構えなど、あらゆるところに目を向けて、優美で感動的な感覚を味わってみては。

Text: Mami Goda. In addition, the splendid beauty of this Art Nouveau architecture shows an exceptional presence in the middle of Buenos Aires.
The building stands at 87m with 14 floors and a 116m long central passage that connects St. Martin street and Florida street. Two magnificent vaults made of bronze and glass pour light into the hallway of the actual shopping malls.
In 1915, this Art Nouveau style building was completed by Italian architect Francisco Gianotti. The building is registered as an historical and cultural heritage property of Buenos Aires. At that time, the Gallery provided a theater, a cabaret, and a restaurant in the basement. The tower on the St. Martin Street side contained 350 offices and the tower belonging to Florida Street had 70 apartments. There was also another restaurant and an observatory on the rooftop. The 14 elevators, which were quite fast for that time, offered a futuristic impact for the building.
At present, the mall counts a number of famous shops, but why not walk and take a look at the vaults through the delicate sunlight, where sculptures richly decorate the marble corridors and the majestic entrance of elevators. Surely you can experience a taste of luxury and excitement.
