ルハン大聖堂Basilica de Lujan

A one hour drive, 70km west of Buenos Aires, is the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Lujan, one of the most important basilicas in Argentina. The basilica has two towers standing more than 100m highブエノスアイレスから西に70km辺り、車で１時間程行ったところにアルゼンチンで最も重要な大聖堂の一つであるルハン大聖堂がある。100ｍ以上の高さを誇る２つの塔が天高々にそびえたち、大聖堂内の中央廊下もまた100ｍを超える。荘厳なステンドグラスも目を惹いて止まない。
この地に初めてチャペルが建てられたのが17世紀後半で、その後拡大を続け18世紀半ばに大聖堂の形として完成。20世紀前半に現在の形に完成した。
ルハン大聖堂は守護歳暮サンタ・マリア・デ・ルハンを祭った巡礼の地である。18世紀にブラジルから届いたマリアの姿はアルゼンチンのナショナルカラーである水色と白に塗られた銀製のマントで覆われ、アルゼンチンで最もポピュラーなマリアの姿となった。
カトリックの信仰が根強く生きているアルゼンチン。毎年行われる巡礼はブエノスアイレス市内のリニエルスからルハンまで15時間以上かけて歩くというもの。毎年100万人以上が参加している。

In the late 17th century, the small chapel was built on this land. Then in the middle of the 18th century, the architecture was completed in the basilical form. The basilica reached the current appearance in the early 20th century.
Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Lujan is an important place of pilgrimage dedicated to Santa Maria de Lujan. The figure of Mary coming from Brazil in the 18th century was covered in a silver coat painted in the national colors of Argentina– blue and white. This figure became Argentina’s most popular image of Mary.
Argentina is a huge Catholic country. The pilgrimage which starts from Liniers of Buenos Aires city and finishes at the basilica takes more than 15 hours by foot. Each year more than one million people participate in this pilgrimage.
