自己紹介と、自身の活動について教えて下さい。
ジュリアン・カストロです。ブエノスアイレスに生まれ育ちましたが、仕事の都合と旅への情熱から、１年の大半を海外で過ごしています。
映像演出について学び、監督業をしています。グロリアフィルムという映画制作会社の2人と共に、ブエノスアイレスの美しいコレヒアレスの隣町を拠点にアメリカ、ロシア、メキシコ、スペイン、ブラジル、コロンビア、チリ、ウルグアイ等でも活動しています。撮影のほとんどがTVのCMやキャンペーン、ミュージックビデオです。
例えば去年はアメリカで放送されるCMをバルセロナで撮影したり、メキシコのスプライトCMをウルグアイで、ブラジルのホンダ用の映像をサンパウロで、VH1の国際キャンペーンをブエノスアイレスで撮影しました。
カンヌライオンズ国際クリエイティビティ・フェスティバルに参加することも仕事の一部です。去年は「ザ・ブック・ザット・キャント・ウェイト」という作品で３つの賞を受賞しました。
その中でもブエノスアイレスでミュージックビデオを撮影するのが好きで、それについてはかなりの量の仕事をしています。とてもエキサイティングで撮影していて凄く楽しいし自由を感じるから。今年は南米で最も人気のあるアルゼンチンバンド、イーリャ・クリャキ＆ザ・バルデラマスの大きな撮影がありした。「アデランテ」という題名で小さい奇妙なストーリーを描いています。
才能あるミュージシャンの友達がたくさんいて、彼らのためにミュージックビデオもつくります。その中で私が誇りに思っていて特に紹介したいのが、アルゼンチンのミュージックビデオフェスティバルで１位になったアクセル・クリヒエールの「センチメント／ペンサミエント」と、ウリセス・コンティの「キャニオンズ・ヒドゥン・アマング・フラワーズ」です。
私のパートナーでもあるアレホ・ローゼンバーグと2010年サッカーワールドカップの公式ミュージックビデオを撮影する機会にも恵まれました。
楽しかったのはツアー中にロラパルーザやビベラティーノ等の大きな音楽フェスで２万５千人の観客の前でVJをしたこと。フランスのアルルフェスでもやりましたが本当に楽しかったです。映像シアターともコラボレーションしました。
特集映像を作るために待機しているときは、個人的にアート映像も撮影します。それが自分にとって心からの表現方法になっています。
あなたの街について教えてください。
自分の街に帰ってくるのはいつでも嬉しく、彼女と平穏な暮らしをしています。
コグランという隣町は庭とプールとパリーラ（アルゼンチンのバーベキュー）付きの一軒家を見つけやすい良い街です。けれどブエノスアイレスは大都市でここ数年で大きく成長しています。サンテルモ、モンセラット、レティーロ等の歴史的な街も見る事ができるし、そこには舗装されていない道やバルコニーやパティオ、アルジベと呼ばれる貯水池、市場のある通りや有名なカフェ、もちろんタンゴを踊る場所もあります。これらは未だにブエノスアイレスのアイデンティティの重要な要素です。
その他にもパレルモ地区やプエトロ・マデロ地区では現代的なブエノスアイレスも垣間みる事ができます。レストランやショップ、ブティックや流行のデザイン等、近代的な都市ではどこでも見つけられるようなものをね。
ですが私が興味をひかれるのはブエノスアイレスの文化的な部分です。ラテンアメリカの文化都市で、映像やアートシーンは豊かに発達しているし、面白く、見るに値するものを作っている誰かを必ず見つけることができます。そういったものを見た後、週のいつであっても食べにでかけたり、パーティに行くこともできます。
市民としての私の視点からすれば、通りや周りの地域、街の一角や美しい公園、バーもレストランも常に変化していて、そこに住む人々は混沌として美しいものです。これらは私自身の歴史と関係があり、世界の中でもここを特別な場所にしてくれます。いつでもこの街を再発見したいと思っています。
ブエノスアイレスで映像を作ることについてどう感じますか？
プロとしての観点から言えば、ブエノスアイレスは映像クルーの技術について非常に高い基準にあると思います。もちろん俳優の才能も注目に値するし、目を見張るものがあります。一般的に、創造性と才能という価値は仕事を簡単に、そして楽しく驚きあるものにしてくれるものであると思います。
最近では監督も俳優も技術系クルーも、専門分野を容易に超えて仕事をします。舞台から映像やテレビ、広告からミュージックビデオやアートビデオ等です。分野の垣根はとても柔軟で、私達は様々な分野を体験でき、その経験をシェアすることで自分たち自身を高めることになるのです。
もう一つブエノスアイレスの映像制作について私が好きなのは、映像制作会社と恊働して、情熱がある人たちとドラマティックな仕事ができること。友人や長年知っている人たちと働きシナジー効果が生まれた時、さらによいものができるのです。
ブエノスアイレスでのお気に入りの場所を教えてください。
お気に入りの場所や一皿を見つけることはそれ自体がとても楽しい趣味で、よく食べに出かけます。
平日のランチ：デメトリアは健康的で実に美味しい食事を提供してくれるレストランです。大きな庭のある建物にひっそりとあって、私の家から近くて自転車でよくいく目的地の一つです。
平日のディナー：アレバリオ (Arévalo 1478, Palermo) は居心地がよくてリラックスできる、パレルモ地区にあるレストラン。野菜中心なのに軽すぎないベジタリアン料理にはいつも驚かされます。様々な国の人が訪れる場所です。
金曜日や土曜日の夜なら、ダダ (San Martín 941, Retiro) に行くという選択に間違いはないでしょう。郊外で、混んだ街から離れてしかもサンマルタンから一ブロックの場所にあり、ブエノスアイレスの雰囲気を楽しむ事ができます。エドゥアルド・シボリ造形美術博物館にやってくる世界中からのビジターもこのレストランのユニークなアイデンティティの一つです。フードもドリンクももちろん美味しいです。
バーについて言うなら、ダダから２ブロックだけ離れたザ・プラザ (Florida 1005 Retiro Basement, Marriott Plaza Hotel) が好きです。クラシックカクテルを楽しむのに最適な場所です。
木曜日であれば、クラブ・ゴングでのデングダンスパーティがいい体験になるでしょう。
パレルモ地区のカフェ・リオには毎週水曜日行っていました。土曜日の夜はマルバでクラシック映画を見るのも選択肢の一つです。
日曜日なら、ラ・ボカでのパスタを食べに行く価値があります。そのあとプロアという、街でも指折りの素敵な現代アート美術館に行けば、そのあたりはフォトジェニックな地域でもあり景色を楽しむことができるでしょう。
食べることが大好きな私からのおすすめは、レコレタ地区にある、料理の質とサービスでも完璧なマルセロです。アルゼンチン料理をアップグレードして、イタリアンやスパニッシュ料理と融合させた料理が素晴らしい。TOMO 1 ももちろん街で一番のレストランです。
レコレタ地区でフランスっぽさを味わうなら、ラ・アイラ (Francisco de Vittoria 2363, Recoleta) という小さなエリアが国立図書館の近くにあって、ブランチでもランチでもティータイムでも楽しめます。
パレルモ公園のエドゥアルド・シボリ造形美術博物館から散歩するなら、リベルタドー通りを国立装飾美術館に向かって国立美術館まで歩き、さらにレコレータ墓地まで行くのが最高のルートです。
パレルモ地区でのショッピングであれば、ラ・パッショナリアは1920年台から60年代のもので溢れていて迷子になってしまうぐらい、驚きの店です。
キャビネットは小さい素敵な店で、世界中からセンスよくセレクトされた本やガラス製品、デザイン雑貨を取り扱っています。
ヴィンテージの服はジュアン・ペレズがおすすめ。
音楽ならロックフロイド。レコードやDVDなどスペシャルで面白いものが見つかります。
ギフトショップのおすすめはSTUです。
エルグランドスプレンデッドシアターは有名なサンタフェ通りにあって、世界でも有数の巨大で素敵な図書館です。

Please introduce yourself and your activity.
I am Julian Castro. I was born in Buenos Aires; I’ve always lived in Buenos Aires, but because of my work, and my passion about travel, I spend pretty much of the year abroad.
I study film direction, and I am a director. I own with two more partners a Film Production Company called Gloria Films. Based in Buenos Aires, in the beautiful neighborhood of Colegiales, we are represented in several countries such as United States, Russia, México, Spain, Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Uruguay. We shoot mostly TV commercials, TV campaigns and music videos.
So, last year for example I could be shooting a commercial for United States in Barcelona, another one for SPRITE Mexico in Uruguay, HONDA Brazil in San Pablo or a VH1 international campaign in Buenos Aires. Or I could be attending at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity that is also part of my job. Like last year where we won 3 Gold Lions with something quite interesting called The Book That Can’t Wait.
But what I really like is to be shooting a Music Video in Buenos Aires, which I do a lot because is exciting and I found great pleasure and freedom doing that. This year we shoot quite a big one for one of the biggest Argentinean bands and most popular in Latin America called Illya Kuryaki and The Valderramas. The video is called ADELANTE and it tells a peculiar small story.
I have very talented friends musicians that I made some music videos for, which I’m really proud of and would specially like to mention: Sentimiento / Pensamiento for Axel Krygier (Won 1st price Argentinean music video festival) and Canyons Hidden Among Flowers for Ulises Conti.
I also have the chance to shoot with my partner Alejo Rosemberg, the Official Music Video for the Soccer World Cup 2010.
Something that was fun was travelling in a tour for a while doing Vjing, live visuals (VJ) in big international music festivals like Lollapalooza and Vive Latino for like 25.000 people, or in France at the Arles Music Festival. And that’s really fun. I have also collaborated with theater plays doing visuals.
And while waiting to do my long feature film, when I have time I also do this kind of arty personal videos that I don’t know how to call them but they are just my sincerest way of expression.
Could you tell us about your city? What do you think about it?
I’m always happy to be back at my city. I live with my girlfriend in a tranquil and very nice neighborhood called Coghlan, where is more easy to have a house with a garden, pool and a “parrilla” (the typical Argentinean barbeque). But Buenos Aires is a big city, and has grown a lot in these past years. You can always see the historical city in neighborhoods like San Telmo, Monserrat and Retiro, with their cobbled street, balconies and patios with “aljibe” (cistern), street fairs and notable cafes and of course the tango places, and all of it is still a fundamental part of our porteño identity.
But know you can also see a more contemporary Buenos Aires in Palermo or Puerto Madero where you see the restaurants and shops, the boutiques and design trends that you can find in any modern city.
But what really interests me is the cultural Buenos Aires. It is the Cultural Metropolis of Latin America. The theater scene and the art scene are so rich and diverse that you can always find something interesting to see or someone who is doing something that is worth seeing. And go eating any time of the week after that or just go party.
My perspective as a citizen which have to do with my history at theirs streets and neighborhoods, its squares and beautiful green parks, their bars and restaurants in constant change, and its people, that continuous chaotic richness make it’s a very special place in the world and I’m happy to rediscover the city in every time.
How do you feel about filmmaking in Buenos Aires?
From the professional point of view, Buenos Aires have a real high standard in terms of the professionals and the technical performance of what we called the film crew. And of course the talent of the actors is really remarkable and stands out. In general the creativity and the talent are values that makes the work much more easy, amusing and fun.
These days’ directors, actors and technical professionals work and moved easily form one discipline to another: from theater to film and TV, to advertising and music videos and art videos. The boundaries are very flexible and we can all do different things, share experiences and be enriched with it.
And something I also like about filming in Buenos Aires it has to do with that working in a film production company is all about working among people in a very enthusiastic and dynamic way, and that synergy when it happens with friends and people that you choose and know form years, it gives much more sense to all of it.
Please tell us about your favorite places in Buenos Aires.
Eating out anywhere is one of my favorite things to do. And have favorite places and favorite selected meals could be itself a really fun hobby. We do it a lot.
Lunch during the week: Demetria is the principal restaurant where eating healthy and delicious is possible. Kind of hidden placed in a big garden building is near my house and it’s my regular bike destination.
Dinner during the week at Arevalito (Arévalo 1478, Palermo), a cozy and relax Palermo spot and be surprised by its creative vegetarian but not especially light dishes. International public is often seeing there.
Fridays or Saturday nights going to Dadá (San Martín 941, Retiro) is always a good choice. In downtown, far from the crowded Palermo and just one block from the amazing San Martin square, have a real Buenos Aires atmosphere. And the universal and mixed crowd that comes to Museo de Artes Plásticas Eduardo Sívori, is part of one of its unique identity. And of course the food and the bar are very good.
Talking about bars and just 2 blocks from Dadá I like the Bar at The Plaza (Florida 1005 Retiro Basement, Marriott Plaza Hotel). Always a nice spot to have a classic cocktail.
Heading the night, and very close, Thursdays is a good day to go and experience the Dengue Dancing Party at Club Gong.
Wednesdays I use to be a regular at Café Rio in Palermo, a really meeting point. On a Saturday night a classy movie at the cinema of the MALBA sounds like a plan.
A Sunday, with good disposition for an enjoyable ride, worth it to go and have a nice pasta at La Boca and then head to a really picturesque area where is one of the nicest contemporary art museums in the city, PROA and a great view.
From a foodie point of view, and talking about quality, service and excellence, I ought to mention Marcelo in Recoleta: and upgrade of the argentinean cuisine that mixed the best meats with Italian and the spanish influences. And of course, TOMO 1: simply the best restaurant in town.
To spot the frenchy part of the capital, in the Recoleta, in a small area called La Isla (Francisco de Vittoria 2363, Recoleta), near the great National Library it is Florencio, a real frenchy little place to have a brunch, lunch or tea time.
The ride where you can walk from the Museo Sivori at the Bosques de Palermo, taking Libertador Avenue heading the Museo de Arte Decorativo, to the Museo Nacional de Arte, and then to the Centro Cultural Recoleta is really one of the nicest and best walks to do.
To shop, in Palermo, La Pasionaria it’s quite an amazing place to shop and get lost between gems from the 20´s to the 60´s.
Kabinett is a small nice place to do some divers and well selected object, book, glasses and design from all over the world.
For vintage clothes: Juan Perez.
For music, Rock’n Freud, besides the Alto Palermo shopping, where you can find special and interesting pieces. Vinyl and music DVDs.
Letting oneself be advised. A very nice gift shop: STU.
And yes, the library Ateneo Grand Splendid, at the famous Santa Fe Avenue, one of the nicest and biggest libraries in the world.
