If you did not know which country you were in and you reached the Mayo Avenue, you could be led to believe you were in Paris or in Spain５月大通りを歩いていると、まるでパリかスペインにでもいるような気分になり、その周辺に流れる空気は他の地区よりもゆっくりと流れているかのようである。そんな５月大通りの中心に見える、レトロな赤い字体の看板を掲げた「カフェ・トルトーニ」。
このカフェの名前は1858年、フランス人移民がパリのイタリアン大通りにあった、19世紀パリの文化を象徴する文人達が集っていた場所を偲んで名付けたのだという。20世紀に入ってから別のフランス人に引き継がれ、それ以来ここには小説家・詩人として有名なホルヘ・ルイス・ボルヘス、画家ベニト・キンケラ・マルティン、女流詩人アルフォンシーナ・ストルニィ、歌手カルロス・ガルデルなどの著名な作家、画家、音楽家、ジャーナリスト達が通っているという。
気軽に軽食を食べながらアルゼンチン・タンゴを鑑賞したり、古き良きアルゼンチンの精神が流れる店内でのディナーもまた格別だろう。
時の流れが止まったかのようなその空間を求めて、多くの外国人や昔ながらの地元ブエノスアイレス人が訪れている。

Translation: Yuki Mine. The restaurants, the hotels and the buildings all disconcert the passer-by, thus creating the illusion that time on that avenue has gone by at a slower pace than in the rest of the city.
At 800, Mayo Ave. in the middle of the block, a sign in antique red lettering strikes those walking by: “Café Tortoni”. Legend has it that in 1858 a French immigrant whose surname was Touan named the place in remembrance of a site in the Boulevard des Italiens, where the elite of the Parisian culture of the 19th century used to gather.
At the turn of the century it was purchased by Mr. Celestino Curutchet. From then onwards the bar has become the meeting place for writers, painters, musicians and journalists of considerable fame – Jorge Luis Borges, Benito Quinquela Martin, Alfonsina Storni and Carlos Gardel.
Nowadays, you can savour a good serving of snacks while enjoying a show of tango — the Argentinean dance per excellence — or a complete dinner with all the spirit of antique Buenos Aires.
It is usually populated by foreigners and typical Buenos Aires characters, those who wish to live with the illusion that time has not gone by.
