Santa Fe Avenue, one of the main busy streets of Buenos Aires, lined with electronics stores, supermarkets, pharmacies, shoe stores, and clothing shops, is always crowded with people. Galeria Patio del Liceoブエノスアイレスのメインストリートの一つであるサンタ・フェ大通りは、家電店、スーパー、薬局、靴屋、服屋などが軒並び、交通量も多く、いつも人で溢れかえっている。その喧騒の中に隠れるようにして潜んでいるのが、ガレリア・パティオ・デル・リセオだ。20世紀前半まで女学校だった建物は90年代にアーケード商店街へと変化したのち、今の姿に至った。サンタ・フェ通りに位置する入り口をくぐっていくと、まるで秘密の花園のような空間が待っている。
一階スペースは広いパティオになっていて、すぐに植物の緑が目に飛び込んでくる。気取らないカフェスペースがカフェスタンドの回りにあるのは、無造作に置かれた椅子や机があるから。週末になるとそれらは子供たち向けのアトリエスペースとなり、親子混じって紙やクレヨンなどを使いながらの工作をする心和む風景を目にする。パティオの周りには本屋のメビウスやアルゼンチンや世界の新進気鋭のイラストレーターの作品を文具やオブジェにして販売するモノブロックなどが並ぶ。パティオには階段があり、アートギャラリーや洋服店などが並ぶ２階、３階へと続いている。
全部で52店舗が並ぶガレリア・パティオ・デル・リセオはブエノスアイレスを代表するアバンギャルドなクリエーターたちの溜まり場とも言える。STUDIO 488やミテ・ギャラリー、PASTOなどの若手アーティストの作品を紹介する場から、音楽通が足繁く通うレコードショップのMercurioや現代アートの分野でオーナーが選んだ海外からの輸入書を扱う書店「プル」まで、どこを訪れても若手のエネルギッシュな創造性や自由を感じる空間だ。大通りの喧騒に疲れたときは、ちょっとした息抜きやインスピレーションを求めて、パティオ・デル・リセオの門をくぐるのもいいかもしれない。

Text: Mami Goda, even though it is located on Santa Fe Avenue, is away from the hustle and bustle. Originally a girls’ school in the early 20th century, the building transformed to the appearance it is now when it became a shopping arcade in the 1990s. After passing through the entrance located at the Santa Fe Avenue, you will discover what appears to be a secret garden space.
The first floor is a large patio where you immediately see the green plants from the entrance. Around the patio, there is a cafe stand and its unpretentious cafe space with it’s casual unattended desk and chairs. This area becomes a studio space for children on weekends, where you can enjoy seeing a heartwarming scene of children and their parents freely creating with crayons and papers. There is also the Moebius bookstore and Monoblock shop that specializes in stationary and objects of the works of up-and-coming illustrators from Argentina and around the world. There is a staircase in the patio, leading to the second and third floor where clothing stores, art galleries, etc., are lined side by side.
Galleria Patio del Liceo, which contains 52 stores in total, can be considered as a one of the most avant-garde creators’ haunts of Buenos Aires. Including local businesses, such as Mite Galería, STUDIO 488, and PASTO, who represent the young up-and-coming artists’ works, Purr Bookstore, which deals with selected contemporary art books, selected and imported from abroad by the owner, and Mercurio disc shop, where music lovers frequent and show their energetic creativity and freedom. If you are tired of the hustle and bustle of the main street, why not pass under the gates of Patio del Liceo to escape away in search of a bit of inspiration and relaxation?
