Frequently considered Germany’s leading avant-garde established in 1914 Die Volksbühne am Rosa Luxembourg Platz shines brightly with its new facade-renovation1914年に設立され、ドイツの前衛芸術のリーダー的存在として知られる劇場「フォルクスビューネ・アム・ローザルクセンブルク・プラッツ」が、改修工事を経て新たに生まれ変わった。戦前から現代に至るまでフォルクス・ビューネは、ドイツの大衆演劇であるウィーン民衆劇の上演において長い歴史を誇っている。
ベルリンの壁崩壊後、演出家フランク・カストルフは、ポストモダンの前衛芸術に焦点をおいた即興的なパフォーマンス劇場としてフォルクスビューネを一躍注目を浴びる劇場へと押し上げた。ドイツ人演出家クリストフ・シュリンゲンズィーフも同じく注目を集めたが、彼は徐々に映画へと傾倒していった。
現在最も熱いのは「逆説的かつ批評的な、ターボ資本主義時代の演出家」と称されるルネ・ポレシュ。劇場では多種多様なコンサート、映画祭や講演などのほか、レクチャーや映画上映などの芸術を混合させて行われる「テーマティック・ウィークエンド」も行われる。ドイツ人アーティスト、ヨナタン・メーゼが演劇や舞台美術を務めるこの劇場には、芸術的感性に満ちたあらゆる世代の観客が集まる。
上演の殆どはドイツ語だが、たとえ言葉が理解できなくても作品の多くはパフォーマンス主体なので観劇はよい体験となるだろう。安い席に座るより、最高の席を取って観劇することを強くお勧めする。

Translation: Shiori Saito. Volksbühne has a long tradition of staging Volkstheater for the masses, the German variant of popular public theatre both before and after the war.
With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the infamous director and manager Frank Castorf turned Volksbühne into a controversial theatre with focus on reenergising the postmodern avant-garde of improvisational performance theatre. Popular German director Christoph Schlingensief has also been one of the driving figures, but increasingly focuses on his films.
Currently very active is director René Pollesch, the so called paradoxical-critical director of turbo-capitalism. At the theatre there are a variety of concerts, film festivals and theory lectures. As well as the ”Thematic Weekends” with a combination of art forms as for example lectures and films. Famous German artist Jonathan Meese’s is a regular contributor with plays and stage scenery. The crowd is arty, highly spirited, mixed across ages.
Most plays are in German but even with German skills lacking many plays are so performance oriented that watching is adequate for a good experience. Get a cheap ticket as the view is not much worse compared to tickets costing the maximum price. Highly recommendable.
