Now a leading gallery in the Berlin art world, Arndt is a pioneer in the field with an astute ability to sense the city’s art trends. Matthias Arndt established Arndt & Partner in the city’s Mitte borough in 1994今やベルリンのアート・シーンを牽引するギャラリーともいえるアールンド。このギャラリーはパイオニア精神を持ち、そしてベルリンのアートの流行に最も鋭いギャラリーと言われている。1994年マティアス・アールンドはベルリンのミッテ地区にギャラリー、アールンド・アンド・パートナーを設立した。これは旧西ドイツ人による旧東ドイツ地区にできた初めてのギャラリーと言われ、その後ベルリンのミッテにアート・シーンを生み出す大きなきっかけとなった。
最初にミッテのハッケーシャー・ヘーフェにスペースを構え、1997年には同じくミッテのアウグスト通りへ、そして2001年にはベルリンの壁近くの観光名所として名高いチェックポイント・チャーリー付近のツィーマー通りへと移っている。最近では2009年にハンブルガー・バンホフ美術館裏へと移転しており、2010年ギャラリーの名前を「アールンド」に改名すると同時にポツダマー通りに再移転した。
現在猛烈な盛り上がりを見せるポツダマー通り界隈も、2010年春のアールンドの移転以前は大手ギャラリーはほとんどなく、この移転は多くのギャラリーを流入させる呼び水となった。そもそもアールンドのスペースを構える場所は常にその時のベルリンのアート・シーンの中心地であり、このギャラリーの移転の歴史こそが、ベルリンのギャラリー・エリアの移り変わりの歴史といえるだろう。つまりマティアス・アールンドは常に時代を見守り、先を読もうとしているのだ。
取扱うアーティストはギルバード・アンド・ジョージやソフィ・カル、そしてトーマス・ヒルシュホーンといった国際的なアーティスト。ただ時代の先取りをするだけでなく、良質なアート作品を見せてくれるアールンド。このギャラリーを訪れずにベルリンのアート・シーンを語るのは難しいだろう。

Text: Kiyohide Hayashi. Celebrated as the first gallery in former East Germany opened by a former Western German, his initial enterprise flourished into a major contributor of the Mitte art scene.
First set up an exhibition space at Hackesche Höfe in Mitte, the gallery transferred to Auguststrasse—also in Mitte—in 1997. In 2001, it moved again, this time to Zimmerstrasse, near the Berlin Wall’s famed tourist spot, Checkpoint Charlie. More recently, in 2009, the art space moved behind the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum, and finally resettled in Potsdamer Strasse under the new appellation, “Arndt,” in 2010. The Potsdamer Strasse area is now brimming with activity and energy, but when Arndt relocated there in the spring of 2010, large galleries were sparse; Arndt’s move prompted other galleries to settle in the area. In fact, wherever Arndt sets up shop is the actual heart of Berlin’s art scene. The history of the gallery’s migration across the city reflects the movement of Berlin’s art galleries. In other words, Matthias Arndt is always one step ahead, while keeping an eye on the contemporary landscape.
Arndt’s list of artists includes international figures like Gilbert & George, Sophie Calle, and Thomas Hirschhorn. The gallery is not only forward thinking, but it also offers top quality art. It is perhaps impossible to discuss Berlin’s art scene without first visiting Arndt.
