Kunstmuseum is one of the oldest museum in the world. Located in the south-west of Basel, it was established in 1671. The museum houses the masterpieces from across the globe– such as El Greco and Delacroix from the 15th century, and Vincent van Gogh, Paul Klee, Gauguin, Chagall, Picasso from 19th century. バーゼル南西エリア・ザンクトアルバンの一角にあるクンスト・ミュージアム（バーゼル市立美術館）は外観の素材感とファサード構成から歴史を感じさせられる。1671年に設立され、世界最古の内の一つの美術館としても有名であり、揃えてあるアートコレクションも世界レベルを常にキープしている。グレコ、ドラクロワなど15世紀から19世紀の絵画から、ゴッホ、クレー、ゴーギャン、セガール、ピカソ、モネなどのマスターピースまで収蔵されており、アートと歴史を幅広く行き来できる感覚はワールドクラスの価値がある。
現在の本館は1936年に建てられ、道路沿いに配置されたポルティーク形状で入り口のチケット売り場とカフェは軒下になり、雨天の場合でも困りはしない。一階の展示スペースはバーゼルに関するアートが置いてあり、二階に行くと中世からルネッサンス時代の絵画が、そしてモダンアート、戦後の作品などは二階にあり、階毎に特徴を付けている構成になっている。
1980年には、本館からライン河沿いに歩いて5分ほどのところに別館が設けられ、主にコンテンポラリーアートを中心とした作品が並ぶ。因みにこちらのチケットは本館で購入するのでご注意。そして2016年には本館と地下で繋がっている新館が出来上がりさらに話題となっている。手がけたのは巷では有名な建築ユニット、クリスト＆ガンテンバイン。本館を意識した設計はは数々のデザイン賞も受賞し、斬新な内部空間を堪能するのと同時に巡回展が主の建物は何回訪れても飽きない。バーゼル市立美術館にはスイスと世界の文化を繋ぐ架け橋となる作品、体験が味わえる。

Text: Toru WadaThe main building, HAUPTBAU, was built in 1936. It has striking arcades where you will find two ticket desks and a cafe. The exhibitions on the ground floor displays Basel’s local arts, and on the second floor you will find Medieval Arts, Renaissance paintings, and then Modern Arts and Art after the War.
The museum opened its first extention, GEGENWART in 1980, which focuses on contemporary arts. Please note that the ticket for this museum can only be bought at the main building, which is about 5mins walk.
In 2016, the museum opened its third venue, NEUBAU, which mainly holds special exhibitions. It is connected to the main building by an underground passage. The building was designed by the local architects Christ & Gantenbein. The design is based on the main building, yet it is modern and innovative and has won several design awards. You can easily spend all day there and savour the Swiss culture and masterpieces of the world.
