「サンタ・カテリーナ・マーケット」は、バルセロナの古い街にある。ゴシック建築の教会に囲まれ、細い路地に19世紀の住居などが立ち並ぶこの街に1848年にオープンした「サンタ・カテリーナ・マーケット」は、開始以来、戦後数多くの人々の供給の中心として歴史の動向をその目で見てきた。The Santa Caterina market is located in Barcelona’s old town. Surrounded by gothic churches, narrow streets and 19th century residential buildings. Opened in 1848, the building experienced since then a moving history as the post-war supplying centre for the population. Reaching the nineties of the 20th century it had suffered a significant dilapidation as-well as a commercial breakdown.
As a result of an official competition in 1997 the architecture bureau Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tailgate was chosen to refurbish the old market. It took 7 years to finish the rehabilitation of the building. Due to the premature death of one of the partners of the architecture bureau, Enric Miralles, aswell as complications while the construction works. Archaeological remains were found, belonging to the 15th century dominican Santa Caterina convent and ruins of a roman nekropolis on which the market was build.
What draws ones attention most when passing the new market is probably the colorful roof, covered with hexagonal ceramic tiles, produced especially for the market by “Ceramicas Cumella” from Granollers city, near Barcelona. When looking at the roof from top the images produced by the tiles get visible, a bunch of colorful fruits. The roof is supported by hand-cut wood panels and steel arches, forming sophisticate amorphous curves.
The rehabilitation of the Santa Caterina market won in 2001 the National Award of the Generalitat of Catalonia and found its way to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

1997年に改築が始まり、7年後カラフルな屋根と六角形のセラミック・タイルの屋根に覆われた建物として生まれ変わった。空から見てみると、カラフルなタイルがたくさんのフルーツのように見える。エンリック・ミラージェスとベネデッタ・テイルゲートによるそのデザインは、「ジェネラリタ・オブ・カタロニア」賞を受賞し、ニューヨーク現代美術館への展示も決まっている。
