バルセロナの「アクター」と言えば、皆さんもご存知の建築とデザイン関係の出版社だ。今回インタビューに答えてくれたマーラはACTAR in Barcelona is a well-known publishing house for architecture and design.アクターでマーケティングとプロモーションを行い、ワールドワイドに活躍しているキャリアウーマン。行動範囲の広さ、また知識の豊富さはこのインタビューで分かるだろう。
自己紹介と最近の活動について教えて下さい。
異なる国・都市での生活を楽しむカナダ人、マーラです。カナダのカルガリーとトロントでの生活の後、ニューヨークへ移住し、出版社で働きました。この３年はここバルセロナで、アートやデザイン、建築を主に扱う出版社「アクター」でマーケティングとプロモーションの仕事をしています。
バルセロナについて教えて下さい。その街で暮らすことや仕事をすることについてどう思いますか？
バルセロナは活気があってダイナミックな都市です。海やビーチにもいつでも出かけられるし、とても住みやすくリラックスできる街でもあります。ガウディをはじめ若手のデザイナーや、公共デザインに至るまでデザインに溢れているこの街をとても気に入っています。
バルセロナはとても国際的で、世界中から人がやってくるミーティングポイントになっていて、ここで多くの人に会うことができています。ここに住むまでは生活費は安く住むかと思っていたのですが、今はヨーロッパの都市の中でも高くなってきているようです。
バルセロナのお気に入りの場所を教えて下さい。
バルセロナで好きな場所は、バルセロネータのビーチ周辺を散歩することです。海の近くでのランチは最高で、「カン・マジョ」はテラス席からの景色もいいのでお勧めです。
ゴシック地区もお気に入りでいつも新しいお店やカフェなどを見つけることができます。「カフェ・アカデミア」は手頃な価格で美味しいディナーを楽しめます。「ジンジャー」という古い酒場も人気があります。ラヴァルでは活気溢れる「ボケリア市場」にぜひ行ってみて。マーケット内の「エル・キム」や「ピノッチョ」でのランチもお勧めです。
同様にボーン地区も生活感があって、ユニークなショップやレストランがあって好きなところです。洗練された美味しいスペイン料理を楽しみたいなら「サレーロ」で。ロマンティックな雰囲気に浸れるはず。もしヘアサロンを探しているなら「エル・ペルー」がお勧め。素敵で格好いいサロンです。アートを楽しむなら「チョコレート博物館」の近くの「イグアポップ・ギャラリー」。オリジナルの服やグッズを扱うショップも併設されています。天気が良ければ、シウタデラ公園もお勧め。
夜遅くてもこの地区には多くのバーが営業しています。皆そうするようにギムレットを夜更けまではしごして「ハーレム・ジャズクラブ」で朝まで音楽を楽しむのもいいでしょう。
ランブラス通りはいつも観光客で溢れ、汚く、スリなどの犯罪も多いのでいつも避けて通っています。ただランブラスのカタルーニャ地区だけは洗練されたショップやカフェが多いので好きです。「ザラ」や「ザラ・ホーム」、「マッシモ・ドゥッティ」などをはじめ、「シッタムール」、「ラブリーデイ」などのファッションショップが立ち並んでいます。「セルベセリア・カタラナ」の賑わう店内でピンチョスを楽しむのもいいでしょう。
夜は多民族的な雰囲気が漂うラヴァル地区がお気に入りです。ここはまだ発展途上で最先端の地区で、ピープル・ウォッチには最適です。実に色々な人をここで見ることができます！
最もお気に入りなのは、エンリケ・グラナドス通りです。歩行者天国になっていてとても美しい現代建築が並んでいて、素敵なカフェで休むことができます。「ハバルク」のテラス席でちょっと高めのオーガニックフードのランチもお勧めです。「オリジンズ」もいいカフェですよ。
ラヴァル地区では、「ラスギャラリー・アンド・ブックストア」も是非訪れて。ブックショップの奥にあるギャラリーでは最先端のアートを見つけることができます。
でもバルセロナで本当に一番好きな場所は家の屋上にあるテラスです。そこで太陽を浴びながら一日中くつろいで音楽を聞いたり、読書や友達との食事を楽しんでいます。

Please tell us about yourself and your recent activity.
I am a Canadian who loves the experience of living in different cities and countries. After living in Calgary and Toronto (Canada), I moved to New York where I worked for publishing houses of books, Phaidon Press, Abbeville, Harper Collins, and Scholastic. For the last 3 years, I have been living in Barcelona and working in marketing, online, and promotions for Actar, the international publisher of design, art, and architecture books.
Please tell us about your city, and about living in your city for yourself/activity.
My current city is Barcelona. Barcelona is a young, dynamic and vibrant city. It is at the same time lively and relaxed. It is on the sea, so the beach is always nearby. I like that the city is also very design sensitive, from the legacy of Gaudi to the young designers and creative public design that fill the city. It is also quite international. I am always meeting people from all over the world and I have 2 Japanese co-workers. Before I moved to Barcelona, I thought that the cost of living would be much lower, but now most of Europe is expensive.
Please tell us a favourite places in the city you live and work in.
My favorite parts of Barcelona include: walking along the boardwalk of the beach in Barcelonetta. Going for lunch near the sea is wonderful. Can Majo is a good choice with nice views. I also like walking through the windy streets of the Gothic quarter and discovering new corners, plazas, and cafes. Try to have dinner at the plaza of Cafe Academia, very good food and popular place. This is one of the nicest plazas in Barcelona. Around the corner is a great and cosy bar with yellow leather sofas, it was an old speakeasy, it’s called Ginger. In the nearby Raval, don’t miss the Boqueria market. It’s a wonderful place to sample all of the sights and sounds of the food market and to experience the lively crowds and raucous. Go for the freshest lunch at any of the great stands in the market, try EL QUIM or PINOTXO is the famous one.
I like the Borne area a lot for its lively atmosphere and unique shops and restaurants. I always avoid the Ramblas, too dirty and filled with tourists and pickpockets. Salero is a lovely restaurant featuring yummy spanish fusion food and the atmosphere is fresh and modern, even romantic if you want it to be. The best shops are always off the beaten track, off Carrer Commerc and Princesa. Be adventurous and don’t be afraid to follow the little narrow streets. I can never remember the names of the shops, I just discover them. For changing your hair color, go to El Pelu, a very rocking and hip hair salon. If you feel like some culture, try Iguapop gallery near the Chocolate museum. Beside the gallery there is an original clothing shop for guys and girls. And if it’s a nice day, you must go to Ciutadella park, a fun city park and a great place for soaking up some sun and for people watching. For late night, there are lots of bars. Try the tiny Gimlet for some socializing and a gimlet, a special lime alcoholic drink. And if you want a very late night, go to Harlem Jazz club for live music into the wee hours until the sun rises.
I also like to walk along the Ramblas Catalunya. A very European passageway with nice shopping and cafes. Beside the chain shops of Zara, Zara Home, Massimo Dutti, there’s beautiful fashion designs at Lovely Day and Sita Murt. Take a break and have a coffee and delicious chocolate dessert at Dolso. Beat the crowds and go for early tapas and cervesa at the famous Cerveseria Catalana.
At night, I like the young and lively multi-ethnic scene of the Raval. It’s still an up and coming area, rough around the edges and great for people watching, lots of characters! My favorite street in barcelona is Enrique Granados. It is a quiet pedestrian street with the most beautiful modernist architecture. And there are always great cafes to enjoy a break. It’s nice to sit on the terrace of Habaluc for an inexpensive and healthy, organic lunch. And I love the coffee at Origens.
For the most cutting-edge design books and a gallery at the back, RAS Gallery and Bookstore.
But my all-time favorite place in Barcelona is my very own roof-top terrace! My flat is pretty small, 45 square meters. But the absolute best thing about my flat is my terrace. It is filled with sunshine all day and I can sit and lie out there and listen to music, read, eat, hang-out with friends, take care of my plants.
