4ギャッツ4 GATS

1897年にオープンしたカフェ/レストラン「４ギャッツ」は、100年以上インテリとアーティストが集まる場所として歴史を築いてきた。When I was asked to write an article about the restaurant and café “Els Quatre Gats”,I wasn’t sure if I wanted to recommend this place. Neither the service, nor the prices are very appealing. Why I still think that “Els Quatre Gats” is a must, I will tell you now.
The café and restaurant “Els Quatre Gats” (The Four Cats) opened in 1897. It became over the years a meeting place for intellectuals and artists, one of them was Pablo Picasso. “Els Quatre Gats” organised poetry readings, concerts, cabaret, chinese shadow theatre and art exhibitions. The first solo show of Pablo Picasso took place at “Els Quatre Gats” and his first commissioned work was the menu of the café.
Picasso came at the age of thirteen to Barcelona and stayed ten years before he moved to Paris. The industrial revolution brought wealth to Barcelona and helped the art nouveau movement to grow in these years. Some of the names to mention are Gaudi, Domenech i Montaner, Santiago Rusinol and Ramon Casas.
Picasso entered the art school “Llotja”, at which his father teached. Here and at “Els Quatre Gats”, Picasso got to know the painters Ramón Casas and Miquel Utrillo, the businessman Pere Romeu and Jaume Sabartes, who will become Picasso’s future secretary and became friend of the painters Carles Casagemas, Ramon Pitxot, Isidre Nonell, Ricard Canals, Sebastià Junyer-Vidal, the writer Ramón Reventós, the sculptors Manolo Hugue, Juli González and Pau Gargallo. Carles Casagemas accompanied Picasso at his first visit to Paris to see the world exhibition. In between the years 1904 till 1914 Picasso traveled forth and back between Paris and Barcelona. Many years “Els Quatre Gats” stayed Picasso’s point of reference to meet his catalan friends.
