Amersfoort was first mentioned in writing in 1028, but probably existed from about 1000 AD. This enchanted city, is one of the most important ones of The Netherlands, and is located 40 km from Amsterdam and 22 km from Utrechアメルスフォールトが歴史の文献に初めてその名を刻んだのは1028年だが、おそらくそれよりも前、紀元前1000年の中石器時代からすでに社会が営まれ、ある種の町が形成されていたとされている。オランダにとって歴史的に重要な町の一つであるアメルスフォールトは、アムステルダムから40キロ、ユトレヒトから22キロに位置する。
塔などの中世の建築物がそこかしこに佇む歴史的なこの町には、運河や美術館、数々の商店、美味しいレストラン、そして緑溢れる公園や美しく閑静な住宅街が広がっている。アムステルダムなどの眠らない都会の街に住む人なら、騒がしい街から離れて、いつかこんなところに地に住んでみたいと切に思うだろう。
アメルスフォールトの駅からは、１キロほど歩けば町の中心に出ることができる。そこで見逃してはならないのが、教会塔である「聖母マリア教会塔」。高さ98.3メートルの塔は二つのカリヨン（演奏用の鐘のついた鐘楼）から成り、一つには35個、もう片方には58個の鐘がついている。塔自体にも7つの鐘があるので、合計すると100個にもなる。カリヨンの鐘は4時間ごとに鳴り、金曜日と土曜日の市の日や、木曜日の夜のショッピング・ナイト、その他特別な行事の時には鐘の演奏会も開かれる。
塔のすぐ隣にある教会広場には、いくつものカフェが建ち並び、そこではさまざまな催しが行われている。毎週金曜日の朝にはフラワーマーケット、毎月2回・土曜日には蚤の市、そして夏の夜には野外映画の上映も。このような催しは、そこから2分ほど歩いたところにあるケルコフでも見られる。
町の中心には、他にも訪れるべき二つのアート・スポットがある。「モンドリアン・ハウス」と「フレヒッテ美術館」だ。モンドリアン・ハウスは抽象絵画の巨匠ピエト・モンドリアンの生家であり、今でもたくさんの彼の作品が残されている。また、フレヒッテ美術館はその美しい建物の中に、絵画や文献、写真、さまざまな考古学的な物品や家具など、町の歴史を物語るさまざまなものが所蔵されている。
フレヒッテ美術館から1ブロック歩くと、15世紀初頭に建てられた城門「コッペルプールト」（写真）がある。町の中でも特に目立つこのランドマークは、エーム川にまたがり、水陸の城門として使用されていた。コッペルプールトともう一つの城門である「モニッケンダム」は、外壁の外にありながらも残る唯一の中世の城門である。
1800年にはこの二つの城門を取り壊す動きがあったが、幸い免れた。コッペルプールトはその後1997年に改修が行われ、歴史的な建築物の修復に贈られるヨーロッパ・ノストラ賞を受賞している。
城門を過ぎ、運河沿いにまっすぐ歩いていくと、町で最も人気のレストラン「ダラ」に行き着く。ダラは絶品のモロッコ料理を運河とコッペルプールトを眺めながら食すことができる最高の立地にあるレストランだ。運河を渡ると、ミシュランの星に輝く「デ・サフレ」がある。ここでは上質な料理とエーム川を行くボートの上で食事ができるサービスがある。
もし洋服やオランダ旅行らしいお土産を買いたい場合は、町の中心へ。どこの街でも見かけるような大手のファッション店が入ったモール（スタッドスリングの中にある）やさまざまな商品のお店が立ち並んでいる。
アメルスフォールト は歴史と発見に満ち溢れている。歴史的な観光名所を回るのもひとつの楽しみ方だが、町の通りや公園をそぞろ歩くだけでも、きっと素敵な風景に出会えるだろう。

Medieval buildings, a Tower that can be seen from almost anywhere in the city, canals, museums, shops, great restaurants, green parks and beautiful quiet neighborghoods are the main ingredients of a place that must be seriously consider as a getaway, specially if you are wiling to take a breathe of the crowded-never-sleep Amsterdam.
If you arrive by train, within 1 km walk you will reach the center of the City. You cant miss Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren (The Tower): it is 98.3 meters tall and holds two carillons, one consisting of 35 bells, the other of 58 bells. The additional 7 swinging bells make a grand total of 100 bells. The carillon plays on the quarter hour and concerts are played on market days (Fridays & Saturdays), shopping night (Thursday nights) and for special occasions.
Right next to the tower is the Kerkhof (church square), full of cafes and fairs: every Friday morning a beautiful flower market can be visited , two Saturdays per month a flea market is there, and in occasional summer evenings, outdoor movies are projected. Walk for 2 more minutes and you will be at The Hof (The square of court), where similar events to the ones happen at the Kerkhof can be found.
Also in the Center, Amersfoort has two interesting art places that is worth to be visited: Mondrian Huis, the house in which the painter was born, where many of his works are living nowadays; and the Museum Flehite, a lovely building that contains a selection of paintings, prints, photos, archeological finds and furniture depicting the area´s history.
One block away from the Flehite you will noticed De Koppelpoort (photo), a shocking landmark , built in the early 15th century, that used to be a water and land gate over the Eem river. The Koppelpoort and the Monnikendam (another beautiful water gate in Amersfoort, +1400) are the only gates remaining from the outer wall. In 1800 was an unlucky intention of demolish them , but they still the same and The Koppelpoort was recently restored (1997) and honoured with the Europa Nostra award.
If you keep walking in the same direction, following the canal, the trendiest restaurant of the city will appeared: Dara, a delicious moroccan food in a really nice ambient and the possibility of eat staring at the water and The Koppelpoort. Crossing the canal, the Michelin´s star De Saaffre offers high quality food and the experience of eat over the Eem, into a boat.
If you want to buy clothes or typical netherlanding remembers, just take a walk in the center where you will find all kind of shops, including a mall (in the Stadsring) where many of the big fashion stores every–city-has-to-have are.
Amersfoort has many places full of history and inspiration, you can make a plan to see the historical and tourist sites, but you can also just let yourself go through the streets and parks, discovering in your way a really special place in the world.
