寒さの厳しい冬の北海道の中でも、常に最低気温ランキング上位に位置する占冠村。占冠村トマム地区に「アルファリゾート・トマム」はある。マイナス20℃を越える程、猛烈に冷え込む日も少なくない。Shimukappu Village is one of the coldest areas in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. There is a big resort called “ALPHA RESORT” in Tomamu, Shimukappu.寒さ故の極上の雪質を誇り、全国はもとより世界中からスキーやスノーボード客が集まる人気スポット。ゲレンデのみならず誰もが楽しめる様々なアクティビティ施設があり、あらゆる冬の遊びを網羅できるメガリゾートだ。山岳にそびえ立つ超高層ツインタワーは、あまりにも有名だろうか。
しかし、ここにトマムの寒さでしか成し得ない、研究者と職人の技がつまった幻想的な空間が潜んでいることは、過去あまり知られてこなかった。実は９年前から展開されていたのだが、今シーズンからより大きく見どころとして取り上げられるようになったというこの空間、氷のドームが立ち並ぶ「アイスビレッジ」に足を運んだ。それも二十四節気で最も寒い「大寒」の日のこと。最も寒い日に最も寒いビレッジへ！
日もすっかり落ち、冷え込みが一層厳しくなる夕方５時、アイスビレッジはイルミネーションの煌めきに包まれてオープンする。オープン時間を目指して札幌よりJRに揺られることほんの１時間半弱。トマムとは意外にも身近でアクセスしやすい場所にあった。JRトマム駅を降りると、すでにリゾートは目の前に広がり、列車時刻に合わせた無料送迎バスに招かれる。つまり目的のエリア内には、待つことも迷うこともなく、とてもスムーズに足を踏み入れることができるのだ。
この季節、雪氷のアートが群がるフェスティバルが北海道中に数ある中で、このトマムのアイスビレッジにしかない最大の特徴とは一体何か。それはこの小さなビレッジに点在する、大きな氷のドームの独特な建築技法にある。北海道東海大学の教授である粉川牧氏が研究開発した、この厳しい寒さを利用した技法によって、安全で素早く自在な雪氷大型ドームの建築が可能となった。そしてその可能条件を最適に満たした日本唯一とも言えよう土地が、この冷え込みが厳しく日中でもなかなかマイナスの気温を脱しない冬のトマムなのである。
ビニールシートとロープを使って作る巨大風船に、雪と水を吹き付け、氷の壁を成長させるというのが、その独特の技法だ。この方法を利用することで、設営時マイナス10℃を下回る好条件になると、直径15mのドームで2、3日ほどでできあがる。雪山をくり抜いたり、氷のブロックを積み上げる労力とは比べ物にならない。形も目的に応じて自在である。最大では直径30ｍの大型ドームの制作を過去に成功させているとのことだ。しかも、氷のドームは、かまくらやイグルーと違い、透過性が高いので柔らかな光を帯びた幻想的な空間を出現させることができる。
また、最も重要である“安全性”という面においても、トマムの制作スタッフが発揮する氷育ての勘と技によって、絶対的な強度が保たれていた。気温や吹き付ける雪の条件に慎重に気を使い、0.6という密度を基準に約15cmの厚さに育て上げた壁を保つ、とスタッフが教えてくれる。ドーム表面は昼間の日光を遮るために、適度な雪の膜で覆われていた。どうやら氷は厳しい中に生きる、想像以上にデリケートな“生き物”だった。
入口にある大きな雪像門をくぐり、巨大な氷の彫刻看板にいきなり目を奪われた後、白樺の木々をぬって小道を進む。幻想的な異空間へと導くのは、足下を照らす小さな氷のライティング。すると、さらなる光を帯びた透過性の高い氷のドーム群が現れる。
「インフォメーションドーム」という最初のドームに入ると、その明るさと暖かさに驚いた。もちろん風が遮られたというだけなのだが、思わず暖房が隠れていないか探してしまうほど。中央には、訪れた人々が制作した氷のグラスが並べられていた。このインフォメーションドームを初めとして、アイスビレッジには様々な目的に応じた氷のドームや作品、空間がある。
外には北海道出身のアーティスト（溶接オブジェを得意とする自称「鉄のゲージツ家」）「クマさん」こと篠原勝之氏の作品「真冬の鯉のぼり」がある。春の風をじっと待つかのごとく佇む鯉のぼりに、やがて溶けて空へと舞い戻る氷が見えた時、賑やかな四季と大きな自然の循環を想った。
「クマさん」の作品がある中央スペースの奥に見える、ポッカリと空いた丸い穴に誘われるように進むと、それは「氷のトンネル」である。人が２人、手を繋いで進めるくらいのギリギリの高さと幅で、氷の壁の内側は虹色の光を帯びていた。大事な人と通りたい小さなロマンチックトンネル。
「氷のトンネル」を抜けると、突然眼下に広がるのはアイスキャンドル煌めく「光の海」だった。「アイスビレッジ」に今年から加わった新しい空間である。広場の中央を通る緩やかな階段の先には、アイスポールに囲まれたブルーの神秘的なドーム「氷の教会」が荘厳とたたずんでいる。
「アイスビレッジ」中央部からは隠れた低い場所に位置にするため、トンネルを抜けた後のサプライズ感は一層大きい。「光の海」を進み「氷の教会」にゆっくりと近づいていく目の前にいた２人は、映画のワンシーンの中にいた。
アルファリゾート・トマムには、世界的な建築家、安藤忠雄氏が創り上げた「水の教会」があり、雄大な自然と融合する斬新で美しい空間で結婚式が一年中行われているが、冬期限定でアイスビレッジに出現するのがこの「氷の教会」だ。実際にここで式もあげることができる。「サムシングブルー」という伝説（結婚式に青いものを身につける花嫁は幸せになれるというというもの）が、まるでそのまま形になって見えるかのように、ドーム内は氷の青に包まれ、煌めいていた。
それだけでは終わらない。グリーンライトが埋め込まれた氷の壁が施されているドーム「氷の迷路」では、空間が歪むほどのキラキラな眩しさに迷わされる。細部まで氷で表現された「アイスホテル」にはバスタブまで設置されており、実際にここで眠ることを想像して楽しめた。また、美しくてクリアな幻想世界に夢中で浸るうちに、すっかりと冷えた体をあたためる「ホットステーション」もあり、アイスビレッジを取り囲むように張り巡らされたコースでは「犬ぞりナイトクルージング」にも挑戦することができる。
氷の特徴が様々な形で活かされた幻想空間・アイスビレッジは、厳しい寒さを楽しく美しく暖かくする、知恵と情熱と自然のコラボレーション。吹き付ける雪の中、オープン中もなお作業をすすめるスタッフの笑顔が印象的だった。この後も春の風がふくまでの間、キラキラに世界を楽しむことができる。
あなたならこの寒空の下のクリアなドームにどんな空間を描くだろうか。自然環境を自然のままに利用する、ますます新しいアイディアに対する期待を感じながら、この透き通ったアイスビレッジがトマムに存在できないほど環境が崩れてしまうことのない未来を、切に願う瞬間でもあった。

Text: Yurie HatanoIt’s not unusual this time of year for days to get severely cold with temperatures below -20?. Visitors from all over the world are attracted to witness the best snow conditions being made by the coldness. Even if you are not a skier nor a snowboader, you can enjoy all other kinds of winter activities in the facilities around the mountain. They boast the world’s highest twin skyscrapers in a mountainous region, which maybe you’ve heard about.
However, it is not well known that a fantastic space, with a scholar’s idea and engineers’ skill, coupled with Tomamu’s temperature was also lurking in this resort. In fact, the space has been developed over the last 9 years, but they just started emphasizing the space from this season as the highlight of “ALPHA RESORT”. We visited the space where ice domes are clusterd, “Ice Village”. It was the day that begins the coldest time of the year called “DAIKAN” in Japanese. To the coldest village on the coldest day!
The “Ice Village” opens, filled with sparkling illuminations at 5 pm after sunset when it gets colder and colder. Aiming to make the opening time, we took a JR line. Tomamu was less than an hour and half away from Sapporo. The place was closer and easier to access than we had expected. Soon after we arrived at Tomamu Station, the resort was extending in front of our eyes. As a free pickup bus runs in the train’s arrival time, you don’t need to wait nor lose the way to the resort’s area you will visit.
What is the most special feature of this “Ice Village” in Tomamu among that there are many festivals with snow and ice artworks during the winter months in Hokkaido? It’s in an original architectural technique of the huge ice domes being scattered about the small village. Researched and developed by Tsutomu Kokawa who teaches at Hokkaido Tokai University, it became possible to build huge ice domes which are also safe and easy. The place where it meets this possible requirement best was Tomamu in winter, where it gets severly cold and keeps minus temperatures even in the daytime.
Spraying ice and snow on a big balloon with vinyl sheets and ropes, and making the ice wall grow. That is the original technique. Using this technicue and in a good condition with below -10?, a dome with a diameter of 15m can be completed in a few days. It’s much easier than the other ways like hollowing out a snow mountain, or piling up ice blocks. The shape can be controled depending on its usage. The biggest ice dome they had built in the past was one with a diameter of 30m. It is also possible to make a fantastic space with soft lighting because the ice domes have high permeability unlike igloos.
In addition, the most important element is “safety”, which is perfectly maintained by intuitions and the skills of Tomamu’s production staff. Taking care of temperature and spraying snow, they keep 15cm thick of ice walls based on consistency of 0,6. To avoid direct sunlight, the dome’s face is covered by moderate amount of snow. It seemed that the ice was a delicate “creature”, living in strict condition.
After passing through a big snow gate and having your eyes glued to a big ice sculpture with a sign, you thread your way through white birches. Those that guide you to a fantastic space are small ice lightings at your feet. Then you will find the ice domes in a group with further lightings.
I was surprised by the brightness and warmth when I entered the fist dome called “Information Dome”. It was just because the wind was blocked off, but I was almost trying to find a hidden heater. Ice glasses visitors made were exhibited in the center. With the “Information Dome” at the head of the list, there are various ice domes, works and spaces in the “Ice Village”.
There was a work named “Carp Streamer In the Midwinter” by an artist from Hokkaido, Katsuyuki Shinohara a.k.a. “KUMA-San” who is good at welding objects. I felt the circulation of the big nature and the colorful four seasons in the carp streamer waiting for the spring wind, and also in the surrounding ice which will go back to the sky over the course of time.
From the center space where “KUMA-San”s work is placed, you can see a round hole. That’s the “Ice Tunnel”. In height and the width that just two persons can go through joining hands with, the wall inside is shining in rainow-color. A little romantic tunnel to go through with someone precious.
After passing the “Ice Tunnel”, the “Sea of Light” with twinkling ice candles suddenly appeared. It was a new space added in the “Ice Village” from this season. At the end of the stairs through the center of the “Sea of Light”, a mystical blue dome between ice poles “Ice Chapel” was solemnly standing. The surprise feeling after people go through the tunnel is larger because it is located in the low place hidden from “Ice village” center part. A couple in front of me, going through the “Sea of Light” towards the “Ice Chapel” seemed to be in a movie scene.
You might already know that “ALPHA RESORT TOMAMU” has a “Water Chapel” designed by a worldwide architect Tadao Ando, and weddings are held all the year round at this beautiful and novel space with nature. This “Ice Chapel” in “Ice Village” is the limited version only in winter season but weddings can be held here too. As if the legend “Something Blue” (legend that the bride with something blue at the wedding will become happy) could be seen, inside the dome was filled with glittering ice blue.
That was not all. “Ice Maze” made me get lost with its ice walls where bright green lights were buried. “Ice Hotel” even had a bathtub with other details expressed by ice, and I could enjoy imagining actually sleeping here. There was also “Hot Station” that warmed a completely cold body. Moreover, you can try “Dog Sled Night Cruising” in the course that surrounds the “Ice Village”.
Fantasy space “Ice village” in which the feature of ice is made the best use of in various shape was a collaboration of wisdom, zeal, and nature to warm the severe cold temperatures with beautiy. The smiles of the staff still working for the ice creations during the time of opening to the public were impressive. You can enjoy the clear world after this until the spring wind blows.
What space do you draw in a clear dome under this wintry sky? I felt the expectation for more and more new ideas to use the natural environment naturally. At the same time, it was a moment I sincerely wished that won’t happen, if we reach a future environment where this transparent “Ice Village” in Tomamu cannot exist.
