SCAI THE BATHHOUSEは、最先鋭の日本のアーティストを世界に向けて発信すると同時に、日本ではまだ紹介されていない海外の優れた作家を積極的に紹介する現代美術ギャラリー。200年の歴史を持つ由緒ある銭湯「柏湯」を改装し、1993年にオープンしたShiraishi Contemporary Art Inc. opened a gallery “SCAI THE BATHHOUSE” in 1993, in the historic Yanaka district of Tokyo. SCAI THE BAHHOUSE is remodeled from a traditional Japanese public bathhouse, “Kashiwayu”, which was established in 1787。
このギャラリースペースは、銭湯のもつコミュニケーション機能を現代美術という共通言語によって引き継ぎ、外観は瓦屋根に煙突がそびえる風情あるたたずまいだが、一歩中にはいるとコンクリートの床に白い壁面のニュートラルな空間が広がる、きわめてユニークな展示空間となっている。高い天井からは自然光が入り、開放感も演出している。
最近の主な展覧会として、横尾忠則、宮島達男など国内の作家をはじめとして、アニッシュ・カプーア、ジュリアン・オピーなど、海外の著名なアーティストの展覧会も開催している。
周辺は下町として親しまれている谷中の界隈。美術館や芸大が点在する上野からも近く、アートゾーンの中に立地。交通は、JR山手線日暮里駅南口から徒歩６分、地下鉄千代田線の根津駅から徒歩７分ほど。
展覧会は不定期で開催されている。展覧会会期中は、日曜日と月曜日、祝日が休廊日。

In remodeling the space, the integrity of the original structure has been preserved, the space features typical Japanese roofing tiles, over 7 meter high ceilings, and skylights providing for natural sunlight, making it ideally suited to the exhibition of contemporary art.
SCAI has been exhibited the works of prominent artists, such as Tadanori Yokoo, Tatsuo Miyajima, Anish Kapoor, Julian Opie etc.
