Si Chan is a 2012 graduate from the London College of Fashion; his designs are unusual but thought provoking. We caught up with him to talk about his work and Londonチャン・シーはロンドンカレッジ・オブ・ファッションを2012年に卒業。彼のデザインはユニークで、見る側を考えさせる作品が多い。コレクションとロンドンについて彼に話しを伺った。
ご自身と仕事について教えて下さい。
ロンドンカレッジ・オブ・ファッションを卒業したマカオ出身チャン・シーといいます。今回の小規模なメンズコレクションは、私の経験より、人々の中の寂しさや人と人との繋がりを手の表情・動き、特に「ハグ」をテーマに表現しています。
最近どのようなプロジェクトに取り組んでいますか？
故郷でファッションデザイン短期コースの非常勤講師として働く傍ら、ロンドンの別のファッションの大学で大学院課程への入学を予定しています。次回のコレクションでは、より身につけやすく、耐久性と機能性を持ち合わせた作品を企画しており、高品質な素材とクラフトで紳士服のクラシックさとトレンドの要素を組み合わせています。メインコンセプトは、宗教、人、世界、真実。現在、自己満足と芸術表現、観客からの評価のバランスを模索中で、次のコレクションはもう自分だけのものではないという意識で、できるだけ様々なアングルで考えていこうと思っています。
デザインのためのインスピレーションはどこから得るのですか？
幼少時や現在の私自身の経験がいつも私のインスピレーションの源となっています。新しく学んだことと自分の記憶とを組み合わせ、伝統的で、クラシックな要素も持った新しいデザインを制作するのが大好きです。
今後のプロジェクトを教えて下さい。
これまでは常に未来を楽しみにしてきましたが、業界にはまだまだ多くの未知の要素があり、非常に激しい競争があるため、この環境の中でどのように自分の未来を作っていくか、まだ細かいところまで決まっていません。まずは、大学院の面接に受かり、MAのコレクションを完了するために全力を尽くすつもりです。卒業後、自分のブランドを構築するために時間をかけるつもりです。それとは別にウォルターヴァン・ベイレンドンク、コムデギャルソン、アンダカバーイズムなど、私の好きなデザイナーと仕事をする機会を持つことができれば、非常に良い経験になると思っています。ファッション以外でもクリエイティブな作品作りにも興味があります。
ロンドンを教えてください。それのどんな所が好き？
ファッションデザインを勉強するためにロンドンを選択したのは、私の言語的な理由と、多くの有名なファッションデザイン大学があったからです。実際に来てからも、ロンドンはファッションや芸術の分野を発展させることのできる魅力的な場所であると感じています。ロンドンは世界中から数々の国が集まっており、街の許容度が非常に大きいです。決まったスタイルはなく、アートワークが美しくても奇妙であっても、必ず誰かに響く、人々のスタイルがカジュアルであっても、華やかでも、アバンギャルドでも、テイラーメイドであっても、そこに格付けがされません。みんなが同じステージでそれぞれの才能を発揮することができます。そしてもちろん、多くの有能な人がいるため競争力が高く、それが私の良いモチベーションになっています。
ロンドンのお気に入りの場所を教えてください。
特にロンドンで毎週末開かれている、ブリックレーン、スピタルフィールズ・マーケットやポートベロー・マーケットなどが大好きです。ロンドンには異なる文化が集合している場所であり、これらのマーケットではその文化をみることができます。これらの小さなマーケットには、様々な人種、年齢、スタイルの人が集まります。食品、洋服、アンティーク、工芸品、家庭用品などを見ていると、とても自由な気持ちになり、リラックスすることができます。

Please introduce yourself and your work.
This is Si chan who is from Macau and graduated at London College of Fashion. This is small mens collection which makes use of series of hand movement especially “HUG” to express how the (dis) connection between people to people and the loneliness by my experience.
What projects have you been working on recently?
I have been working as part-time tutor for a fashion design short course in my hometown and meanwhile, I am applying for a postgraduate course at another fashion college in London and also preparing my next collection which would be more wearable, durable and functional combining with classic and trendy elements of menswear in high quality material and craft. The main concept of the next collection would be about religion, people, world and truth. I am seeking the balance between self-satisfaction and expression of art and also the appreciation from audiences so the collection would not be personal anymore and I need to consider as much as I can from different angles.
Where do you get inspiration for your designs?
My experience and childhood are always the inspiration for my creations. I love to use something new that I learnt recently to combine with my memory, which means something traditional or classic, then to create new designs.
What are your future plans?
Although I have been always looking forward to the future, there are too many unknown factors and very strong competition in this industry which means that I haven’t planned in detail about it. At this moment, I have to pass the interview for the application to a postgraduate course, and then try my best to complete the MA collection. I am not in a hurry to build my own brand after my graduation. It would be a very good experience if I could have the chance to work with my favourite designers such as Walter Van Beirendonck, Comme des Garcons, Undercoverism, etc. Apart from that, I am interested to get involved in other creative works except fashion.
Could you tell us about London? What do you like about it?
The initial reasons for selecting London to study fashion design is that, there are many famous fashion design universities in London and my language limitation. After that, I discovered that London is an appealing place to develop fashion and art fields. London gathers different nations from all around the world. Moreover, the allowance of this city is very big. There is no fixed style. No matter whether an artwork is made beautifully or weirdly, there will be somebody who will appreciate it. No matter if your style is casual, flamboyant, avant-garde or tailoring, there are no grade differences between them. Everyone can show his or her talent on the same stage. Of course, there are many talented people and the competitiveness is high. However, these became my motivation to be much better.
Please tell us about your favourite places in London.
I love the markets, which open every weekend in London, especially Brick Lane, Sptialfields Market and Portobello Market. London is a place which gathers different cultures, and those markets reveal it exactly. Every weekend, in those small places people gather with different races, ages and styles. Various food, clothes, antique, crafts and housewares can be found here. These make people feel free and relaxed.
