Downtown Rio is called “Centro” by the cariocas. Among the more famous features of this neighborhood, like the Municipal Theatre, the Candelária Church and the National Museum of Fine Arts, lies a square called Praça Tiradentesリオのダウンタウンは、地元の人々にセントロと呼ばれている。この地域にはより広く知られている市民劇場、カンデラリア教会、国立美術館などと共に、「チラデンテス広場」と呼ばれる場所がある。チラデンテス広場にあるジョアン・カエターノ劇場、カルロス・ゴメス劇場の二つはリオで最も重要な劇場である。この歴史ある市の一角、チラデンテス広場48番地では、かつてニューヨーク・メトロポリタン歌劇院で主力な歌い手だったブラジル人ソプラノで、偉大なリオ市民でもあるビドゥ・サヤオが所有していた古い３階建ての建物を見ることができる。
この美しく復元された建物の中に、「カリオカ・デザイン・センター（CCD）」はある。ここは、リオのデザインについての議論のためのオープンスペースだ。市の歴史的に重要な場所に位置するこの建物は、クリエイティブな経済・都会的な考え方とデザインを介して結びついている、文化・歴史的遺産の広報活動を推し進めるための戦略としての役割も担っている。３階のオープンギャラリーでは展覧会、ワークショップや日常の会議などが催される。カリオカデザインセンターは、プロフェッショナルや大学関係者、経営者、学生たち、一般市民などを一堂に集め、デザインについて語ったり、リオに貢献できるようにしようと努めている。
カリオカ・デザイン・センターとまさに同じ建物の中にあるのが、「スタジオ-Xリオ」だ。このカルチャーセンター兼研究所はどちらも市や、ニューヨークのコロンビア大学とパートナーシップを結んで、リオの未来を探求している。

Translation: Sahomi Nishimoto. You’ll find two of the most important theaters in Rio right there, the Teatro João Caetano and Teatro Carlos Gomes. In this historic part of the city can also be found an old three storey building at number 48, a place that once belonged to a brazilian opera soprano called Bidú Sayão. Bidú was once a leading artist of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and a proud citizen.
It is inside this beautifully restored building that lies the Centro Carioca de Design. The CCD is an open space for the discussion of design in Rio. It’s installation on the historic center of the city is part of a strategic plan looking to boost Rio’s cultural and historical heritage promoting activities connected to the creative economy and the urban thinking through design. Within it’s 3 floors of open galleries, they hold exhibitions, workshops and conferences on a regular basis. The space strives to bring together professionals, academics, decision makers, students and the general public to talk about design and engage the city.
In this very same house is the Studio-X Rio. A cultural center and a laboratory for exploring the future of cities brought to Rio through a partnership between the city and Columbia University (NY).
