白老ポロトコタンShiraoi Poroto Kotan

Poroto Kotan is an Ainu word that means a settlement of big lake. As there was an ainu settlement since early times in Shiraoi Hokkaido, it has been relocated by the Lake Porotoポロトコタンとは、アイヌ語で「大きな湖の集落」の意味。北海道・白老には昔からアイヌ集落があったことから、これを近郊のポロト湖畔に移設し、資料館とあわせて野外博物館として整備し公開しているのが「白老ポロトコタン」だ。
園内はアイヌのかやぶきの家（チセ）５棟を中心にかつての集落の様子を伝えるとともに、チセ内ではアイヌ古式舞踊（お話と踊り）、アイヌの伝統芸能や手工芸の実演など、無形文化の伝承保存・公開を行なっている。
ポロトコタン内に1984年に開館したアイヌ民族博物館は、アイヌ民族に関する専門の博物館。チセ（家）をかたどった建物の中には、衣食住や生活様式などがわかりやすく展示され、アイヌ文化の調査研究の拠点ともなっている。
アイヌ民族博物館のミュージアムショップでは、ミュージアムグッズから、アイヌ関係の専門書、本格的な手縫いの着物や銘入りの工芸品や、アイヌの楽器トンコリ（写真）やムックリの販売も行っている。トンコリは通信販売でも購入できる。
北海道の地名の多くはアイヌ語を漢字にあてはめたものが多く、その場所がアイヌの人々にとってどのような意味をもっていたか、アイヌ語から知ることができる。ちなみに白老は、アイヌ語で「シラウオイ」「虻（あぶ）の多いところ」だ。
白老観光協会が制作した「白老アイヌ語地名マップ」では、町内の山や川など36カ所の地名の由来を紹介している。マップを手に地域を散策しながら、地名からアイヌ文化や北海道の歴史について学んでみるのも楽しいだろう。

With 5 Ainu traditional thatched houses (chise in Ainu), the museum introduces the settlement in the past. Inside chise, intangible cultural assets are restored and shown by workshops of the Ainu traditional dance and performing arts as well as hand crafts.
In the premises of Poroto Kotan, there is an Ainu Museum opened in 1984, where specializes in the Ainu culture. In the chise-style building, it is a base hub for researching the Ainu culture that introduces Ainu’s food, shelter, and clothing as well as their lifestyles.
The museum shop features museum goods, Ainu-related books, handmade kimono, crafts, Ainu’s instruments such as Tonkori (photo) and Mukkuri.
As many of geographical names in Hokkaido are originated in the Ainu language, you can learn about what the place means to the Ainu people by learning Ainu. Shiraoi is originated in the Ainu word ‘shirauoi’, which means ‘a place with many horse flies’. This could be another way to enjoy Hokkaido trip to learn the Hokkaido history and Ainu culture.
