横浜港シンボルタワーYokohama Port Symbol Tower

Sending signals out to cruise ships and cargo shipping fleets that enter the port of Yokohama from all over the world, the “Yokohama Port Symbol Tower” bids safe travels to all that pass through the port横浜港に出入りする世界中の客船や貨物船に信号を送り、旅の安全を見守る「横浜港シンボルタワー」。地上36.5mにある展望室からは、横浜港が一望でき、晴れた日には三浦半島、房総半島、アクアライン、富士山まで見渡せる。
展望室の入り口近くには「平和を願う国際都市横浜」にちなんだ彫刻『遥かなる物・横浜「貝」』が置かれている。太古のころ、横浜湾に棲んでいたホタテ貝を中心に、富士山や波、小動物をモチーフに制作された作品だ。作者は田辺光彰氏。
またタワー周辺は緑地が広がっており、芝生の上で港を眺めながらのんびりくつろぐ人の姿も多い。ここでテントを張って過ごすことも可能だ。随時、フリーマーケットやコンサート、フラダンスショーなどのイベントも開催され、家族連れで賑わっている。
シンボルタワーへの入場料は無料。駅から少し離れた場所にあるので、バスや車を利用してのアクセスが便利だ。また周辺の「本牧海づり施設」では、有料の貸し竿やつりエサ・釣り具全般を販売しており、気軽に海づりを楽しめる。

Text: Saori Hashiguchi. From the observation room 36.5 meters above ground, one can view the span of Yokohama’s port, and even Miura Peninsula, Boso Peninsula, the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, and Mt. Fuji on a clear day.
Near the observation room entrance stands the sculpture, “Yokohama, an Object Far Away,” which was created to represent, “Yokohama, the international city seeking peace.” In the center of the sculpture is the scallop that once inhabited Yokohama Bay, with Mt. Fuji, waves, and small animals crafted around the shell. Mitsuaki Tanabe is the artist of this piece.
Green lawn also surrounds the Tower where visitors lounge, looking out onto the port. Visitors are also able to put up tents on the lawn. With something happening all the time, from flea markets to concerts and hula dance shows, the lawn is always lively with families visiting the Tower.
There is no entrance fee for the Symbol Tower, and since it is located far from the station, using the bus or traveling by car is recommended. The nearby “Honmoku Fishing Park” offers fishing rod rentals, bait, and sells other fishing equipment for ocean fishing as well.
