Music productionポートランドをベースにノンストップでクリエイティブに活躍するエミール・アモス。 彼には様々な顔がある。JFK暗殺事件の追悼演説を含む、労働についての調査やエッセイから、アバンギャルドなテクノミュージックの作曲やロックミュージックまで幅広く手がけている。また、音楽事務所をつくったり、３つの違うバンドでワールドツアーをしたり、マルチインスト奏者でビデオアートやアート作品をつくる作家でもある。
ホーリー・サンズは彼のソロプロジェクトのことだ。メンバーの一員としてもツアーをまわったことがあるグレイルスは、アメリカのインストゥルメンタル・ロック界を賑わしたアルバム「Doomsdayer’s Holiday」（テンポラリー・レジデンス／2008年）で数多くの高い評価を得ている。
また、彼がドラマーとして活躍する「OM」での活動については、2009年の12月にニューアルバムの「God is Good」で、シカゴのダウンタウンにあるエレクトリカル・オーディオ・スタジオでスティーヴ・アルビニと共にレコーディングをしている。
最近はかなり忙しいのでは？
バンドのグレイルスは10年くらい、ソロプロジェクトのホーリー・サンズは大体20年くらいやってる。でも、バンドが認知されはじめたのはここ５年くらいの間。このことは良いことであるのと同時に、音楽が“仕事”と化してしまう恐れがあって、それは僕がいつも避けてきたことなんだ。でも不平なんかないよ。誰でも手に入るように色んな作品をつくってきたんだしね…。それに僕にとっても今の状況は以前に比べて良くなっているしね。
それから、２年前にOMというバンドに参加して、リリースの数が２倍になったんだ。グレイルスのDVDやJandekのライブも含めれば、去年だけで６枚リリースしたことになるね。
音楽プロデューサーとしてはどうですか？
僕はただ好きじゃないと感じた曲の一部を除いたり、引きつけられた部分を強調したりしてるだけ。だけど一曲をつくるのに、たくさんある中から何千もの様々な要素がある。ある意味、曲が望んだ風につくることではなく、自分にとって特別な何かを強調するということなんだ。僕は自分の手がけるレコードの大半は自分でプロデュースしている。以前は他のバンドで活動することが多かったんだけど、最近はその時間が全くないんだ。
シアトルに移動が必要な時、たとえばOMの活動の際など、どのようにプロジェクトを進行しますか？
シアトルに行くのはあまり好きではなくて、思った以上に長い道のりを運転しないとならないからね。それにシアトルの文化は、労働者的なポートランドの文化よりも人工的な感じがする。OMのアルは南カルフォルニアに住んでるから、僕と一緒に曲を書いたり練習したりするときはシアトルまで飛ばないとならないし。僕は本当は東海岸育ちなんだ。西海岸と東海岸の間には違った接し方がやユーモアのセンスがあるけど、そうしたものの全ては時代とともに分からなくなってしまっているね。
ポートランドに住んでみてどうですか？
10年間ここに住んで、本当に楽しかったのはその半分の期間だね。昔はよくここを出ようと考えたけど、たくさんのプロジェクトにいつもかかりっきりになっているから、何か大きな理由がないかぎり、自分を面倒な状況に置きたくないって思ってるよ。
ポートランドでおすめの場所を教えてください。
グランド・コントロールは、ポートランドで世界的なビンテージアーケードで、ものすごくレアな昔のビデオゲームがたくさんあるから思わず少年の頃に戻った気になれる場所。 数年前オーストラリアの友達数人がポートランドに滞在した時、彼らをここに連れて行ったら次の日まで帰ってこなかったくらい夢中になっていたよ。
パウエル・ブックスは、古本と新刊を扱う世界でも最大級のインディペンデント書店で、ポートランドのダウンタウンの中心部にある。旅行者のとって嬉しいのは、探している本が安く見つけられることじゃないかな。
ポートランドで最高のジャズライブを楽しめる「ジミー・マクス」。オレゴンの伝説的なジャズプレイヤーのメル・ブラウンによるライブが毎週行われている。
あと、ポートランドにはレコードコレクターにとって、４つの必見スポットがあるんだ。レアでエキゾチックなレコードを探すなら、エグザイルド・レコーズとミシシッピー・レコーズ。ジャックポット・レコーズは、新譜とサイケの再版ものかな。クロスローズ・レコーズは、様々な販売業者がそれぞれ委託でレコードを販売しているユニークなショップ。
それとポートランドの町並みを見たかったら、「ポートランド・シティ・グリル」という高層ビルの最上階から街の全景を眺めてみると良いと思うよ。

Holy Sons is his solo project. He has toured with his band Grails which gained a bunch of good reviews on “Doomsdayer’s Holiday” (Temporary Residence, 10/2008) on top of the current American instrumental rock. Regarding his duties as the drummer in OM last December he has recorded a new album “God is Good” with Steve Albini in charge at Electrical Audio studios in downtown Chicago. We know about his tight agenda, however he did not wanted to miss the opportunity to talk to us.
Quite intense times lately, isn´t it?
Well, my band ‘Grails’ has existed for about 10 years and ‘Holy Sons’, my solo project, has been around for almost 20 years now. But it’s only been in the last 5 years that both bands have really come into the public’s consciousness. This has been nice but has threatened to make music more of a “job” and I’d always avoided that. I can’t complain at this point because I’d originally set out just to make the various art I made available to anyone… and the conditions are better for me now than they were before.
In addition, 2 years ago I joined another band ‘Om’ and the amount of releases has doubled. Last year alone I released 6 records if you include the Grails DVD and the Jandek live show that came out.
How is your facet as a music producer?
If you really boil it down, mostly what I’m doing is just eliminating the aspects of songs that I naturally don’t like and amplifying the pieces that I’m drawn to. But there are 1000s of different variables within the various choices you make in building one song. In a way you are trying to amplify what’s specific to your own identity in the song without getting in the way of how the song wishes itself to be constructed. In general I produce most of the records I’m making… I used to work with other bands more often but I’ve completely run out of time lately.
How do you manage projects when you need to move to Seattle, for instance with OM?
I don’t like going to Seattle much, the drive is always longer than you’d think for some reason. It’s culture is also a little more plastic and affluent compared to Portland, which is much more working class. Al from Om actually lives in Southern California so he has to fly up here to write and practice with me. I’m originally an East Coast kid. There’s a difference between west coast and east coast attitudes and senses of humor, but all of that has gotten more blurred with time and transience.
How is live in Portland?
I’ve lived here for 10 years and only really enjoyed Portland for a little more than half of that time. I used to think about moving away often… but until I have a major reason to change things I wouldn’t put myself through the hassle of moving as I’m always entrenched in so many projects.
Please tell us some good places to enjoy the city.
Ground Kontrol – A few years ago some friends from Austria were visiting Portland, I dropped them off at Ground Kontrol and they were so enamored that they didn’t come back until the next day. Ground Kontrol is a world class vintage arcade in Portland full of extremely rare old video games that swiftly bring you back to being a kid again.
Powell’s Books – It is the largest independent used and new bookstore in the world located in the center of downtown Portland. It might be one of the bigger tourist attractions in that you can find cheap/multiple copies of most any book you are looking for.
Jimmy Mak’s – Portland’s best live Jazz is at Jimmy Mak’s. It’s known for weekly shows led by Mel Brown, who is Oregon’s most revered Jazz Legend.
For record collectors there are 4 essential stops in Portland. Exiled Records and Mississippi Records for rare/exotic finds. Jackpot Records for newer records and psych re-issues. Crossroads records for various sellers arranged in a record show format.
And to get a grasp on what Portland really looks like from overhead you can go to the top of a skyscraper and look out over the entire city from the Portland City Grill.
