Paul Smith likes the expression “INDIVIDUALITY”. Placing a high priority on making each shop matching to its town and country, Paul Smith opened Paul Smith Space in Jingumae“INDIVIDUALITY”という表現を好むポール・スミス。世界中で国や街に合わせたショップづくりをとても大切にしている彼が、2006年にオープンした神宮前の「ポール・スミス スペース」は、彼のデザインするフルラインを日本で初めて取り揃えた複合ショップだ。そして、世界中にあるショップの中でもギャラリースペースを併設しているのは、ここだけという特別な場所でもある。
バンクシー、ジオ・ポンティ、デイヴィッド・ホックニーなど名だたるアーティストの作品から、未来への大きな可能性を秘めた新人アーティストまで、ポールの蒐集してきたアートコレクションが世界で初めて展示されたことでも記憶に新しい。有名無名を問わず、ポールらしさが感じられる国内外のアーティスト企画展が年間通じて開催されている。
また、４フロアから構成されるショップではポール・スミスのフルラインの他に、初版のアートブックなど貴重本も並ぶライブラリーや世界中から買い付けてくる雑貨も充実し、世界中の店舗に分散されているポールのアートコレクションが幾つも飾られたアートウォールなど、彼の世界観がトータルに紹介されている。毎年６月頃には、ポールの妻が彼のために３年をかけて開発したという、「ポール・スミス ローズ」という名のツルバラが神宮前の庭にも咲き誇り、住宅街の中にあって緑の多いこの場所をポールもとても気に入っているそうだ。
2009年には、各店舗が違うデザインを所有することで、そこでしか購入できないエクスクルーシブな商品を紹介する「Project 10」も始まり、今後のポールが提案する、伝統の中にも遊び心を忘れない“ひねりのあるクラシック”に注目だ。

Text and photo: mina back in 2006, featuring his full lineups for the first time in Japan. With a gallery space in the shop, this shop is one and only special shop among other shops in the world.
At the space Paul’s art collection was exhibited for the first time in the world, showcased works from the world-famous artists including Banksy, Gio Ponti and David Hockney to young emerging artists, which is still fresh to our memories. Regardless of well-known or unknown, various artists’ art exhibitions are held throughout the year.
The 4-storey shop features not only the Paul Smith full lineup but also a library with various valuable art books and imported items around the world, and an art wall displaying Paul’s art collection selected from his shops around the world. Every June, Paul Smith Rose, a special kind of rose developed for his wife, blossoms in the garden of the shop in Jingumae.
In 2009 a new approach called Project 10 was launched to introduce exclusive items sold at each shop. Check out his continuous and ongoing traditional yet playful ideas of the classic brand.
