Shopper’s paradise Dubai recently opened it’s biggest-ever mall. The sprawling Dubai Mall, which sits next to the world’s tallest building – the Burj Khalifa – is famous for having the world’s largest fountainブランド好きには正に天国とも言える様な国、ドバイ。そのドバイに最近、世界最大規模のショッピングモール「ドバイ・モール」が誕生した。隣には高さ世界一を誇る高層ビル「ブルジュ・ハリファ」が聳え立つ。
ドバイ・モールの中には世界中から1200を超える店舗が集まりその数だけでも目を見張るばかりだが、何と他にも建物内に世界最大級の噴水、そして世界最大のアクリルパネルがはめ込まれた水族館をも擁している。もちろん買い物だけではなく、ゆっくりと食事ができるレストランも数多くあるのだが、その中でも特に個性的な店の一つが「スイッチ」だ。
近未来的な店内は、エジプト人と英国人を両親に持つ世界的なデザイナー、カリム・ラシッドが手がけている。彼はこれまでに2000を超えるプロジェクトを手がけ、その中には料理の鉄人・森本正治がペンシルバニア州フィラデルフィアに構えた「MORIMOTO」やアテネのデザインホテル「セミラミス・ホテル」などがある。
そんな彼の作風は、スイッチの店内にも如実に現れているといえよう。カーブがかった内壁はあたかも鯨の体内に居る様な感じを与え、座席にみられるサイケデリックな色使いはまるで宇宙船を思わせる。しかし、彼のデザインばかりがこの店の特徴ではない。何と言ってもこの店の自慢は南アメリカからやって来た料理人が作る本場の味なのだ。
おすすめは南アフリカでは有名なウスターソースやトマト、玉葱などを煮込んで作ったモンキーグランドソースを使用したハンバーガーや、チーズがたっぷりかかったフィラデルフィア・ステーキ・サンドイッチ（共に38ディルハム）。どちらも積み重ねられたトランプのように上品に飾られた自家製ポテトが添えられている。
ちなみに、バーやラウンジとして一夜を過ごすには最適の雰囲気を醸し出しているが、アルコール類は一切出されない。

Translation: Yuki Mine and an aquarium with the world’s largest single sheet of viewing glass. While there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from at the mall, one of the quirkiest is Switch.
The futuristic diner-lounge is designed by Karim Rashid, the acclaimed Egyptian-English designer who has a portfolio of more than 2000 projects – including the Morimoto restaurant in Philadelphia and the Semiramis hotel in Athens. The curves on the wall give the impression of sitting inside the belly of a whale, while the psychedelic hues of the seating suggest it could in fact be an alien spaceship.
But do not let Karim’s extraterrestrial designs distract you from the original menu prepared by the South African chef. Our recommendations are ‘Switch monkey gland burger’ and ‘Philly steak sandwich’ (38DHS). They both come with freshly cut homemade wedges stacked up like a house of cards.
Although it has perfect atmosphere as a bar and lounge for a night out, no alcoholic drinks are served in this restaurant.
