Jorine Oosterhoff is a product designer, born in The Hague and currently based in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Every one of you would put a smile on your face when you see Jorine’s workヨリネ・オーステルホフは、オランダ・ハーグ出身、アーネム在住のプロダクトデザイナー。ヨリネによるデザインの、その今にも動きだしそうな愉快な姿形をした食器達は、見れば誰もが顔に微笑みを浮かべてしまうだろう。ハーグとアーネムのオランダの２都市に馴染み深い彼女から、オランダの都市の魅力について教えてもらおう。
自己紹介をお願いします。
ヨリネ・オーステルホフ。1981年オランダ・ハーグ出身です。幼少時からファンタジーやシュールな物語と同時にアニメ、キャラクターや陶芸にも特に興味を持っていました。その興味が今も続いているというわけです。私が手掛けるのは、モノに停止した物語を作り出したり、家族のある製品やユニークな物達を作ることです。2005年にアーネム芸術デザインアカデミーを卒業。同年に自身のデザインスタジオ「JORINE」を設立し、現在もオランダ・アーネムを拠点にクライアントワークや個人のプロジェクトを制作しています。
オランダは、家具やインテリア製品など、プロダクトデザインでとても発展している代表的な国のひとつです。オランダのデザインシーンについてどう思いますか？
ダッチデザインは、明確で、落ち着いていて、論理的な製品と言われていて、そんなダッチデザインを有名にしたデザイナーには、ドローグ、マルセル・ワンダース、ユルゲン・ベイ、ハイス・バッカーなどがいます。私たち若手は彼らの恩恵を受けていると言えますね。例えば、アートやデザインでは素晴らしい教育を受けることができます。たまに、オランダ人デザイナーであることの便益を感じることがあります。外国の人の中にはオランダ人デザイナーが好きな人もいて、そのことが、ある種の即効性のある質をもたらしてくれます。ビジネスの上では、そのようなことは関係ないでしょうけど。
また、デザイナーが、人気のある職業になりつつあります。年々世界中でデザイナーを目指す卒業生が増えていて、新しいデザイナーが増えていることから、著名なデザイナーになるのが段々難しくなってきています。私のゴールはそこにはなくて、自分のことをやりつつ素敵なプロダクトを作っていきたいと思っています。
ハーグとアーネムという都市について教えて下さい。
私はハーグというオランダの沿岸に近い政治的主要都市に生まれました。ハーグには、ベアトリクス女王の住む宮殿もあります。小さい頃にハーグから他の街へ引越してしまったので、あまり多くは憶えてないですが、古くてシックな家が建ち並ぶ素敵な街です。憶えているのは、祖父母の住む古くて広々としたオランダの邸宅が以前ハーグにあったことで、いとこ達とみんなでかくれんぼをたくさんしました。
また、オランダのミニチュア都市を再現したテーマパーク「マドローダム」があります。すべて子供の頃の思い出ですね。とても素敵なところです。
現在は、緑が広がるオランダ東部のアーネムという素敵な都市の中心部に住んでいます。緑が多く、とても静かで大好きなところです。庭にはたくさんの鳥がきたり、時にはハリネズミやカエルも現れます。ショッピングセンターも近所にあり、街まで歩いていくことができます。ショッピング以外には、自転車で数分のところにオランダで最大級の自然公園へ行くことができ、そういったところも魅力ですね。
アムステルダムについて教えて下さい。
アムステルダムは活気溢れる街です。なので、多くのオランダ人デザイナーやアーティストやアムステルダムへ拠点を移し活動しています。それにアムステルダムはこじんまりとしているし素敵な場所ではありますが、規模が大きく、世界的な博物館やショップ、オープニングイベント、パーティーなど豊富ですよね。
アムステルダムの雰囲気が大好きです。オランダの西と東では様子が違うのですが、私にとって、西へ向かうことは自分の拠点へ戻るような感じで、ハーグへ行くのがそうです。アムステルダムへ向かうのもそんな感じが少しします。すごくオランダらしいところですね。でもアムステルダムに住むことに興味はないです。アーネムの緑多い静かな街が気に入っています。
アムステルダムにある素敵なショップに、フローズン・ファウンテン、ドローグ、プッチーニ・ボンボーニなど。博物館もたくさんあり、アムステルダム市立美術館がおすすめ。アート、グラフィック、デザインなどの素敵なエキシビションを開催しています。現在は、改築などでたくさんの美術館がクローズしています。
フードデザイナーのマライエ・ フォーゲルサングにより運営されるプルーフ・アムステルダム。彼女はウェディングパーティやビジネスディナーなど特別でユニークなパーティフードの企画をしている。プルーフ・アムステルダムでは、ワークショップを行っていて、ロッテルダムでは「ピックニック」というレストランを経営。目にも口にも美味しい朝食やランチを提供している。
アーネムやハーグでお気に入りの場所を教えてください。
アーネムのショップには、ジョーンズ（服）、カミングスーン（デザイン、本、服）、ヴィムポルマン（陶器／ガラス）、サブウォーク（デザイントイ、グラフィックなどの本、服）など。また、TapeやO.P.A.、ショールーム・アーネムなどのイニシアチブも。
レストランだと、有機素材を利用した魚、肉、野菜料理がおいしい「ルック」 (Kastanjelaan 1, Arnhem)、ダッチデザインの家具が素敵なオーガニック野菜料理を提供する素敵なレストラン「Het Eetatelier」、ベジタリアンなオーガニックフードのこじんまりしたレストラン「Enig Alternatief」、正統派イタリアン「Zilli」など。私はベジタリアンなのですが、紹介したお店では、美味しいベジタリアン料理を低価格で楽しめますよ。
素敵な雰囲気のカフェだと、多くのアーティストやデザイナーが集う「Cafe Vrijdag」 (Velperbuitensingel 21 A, Arnhem)、ビリヤードやライブを楽しめるライン川の近くにある素敵なカフェ「De Kroeg」、広々とした中庭のあるバー「メトロポール」 (Steenstraat 68, Arnhem)、川を望めるリラックス空間の「ローゼズ」など。リラックスするにはSonsbeekparkという公園もオススメ。芝生で寝転んだり、森を散歩したり、たまにフェスティバルも開催しています。
ハーグのショッピングエリアはあまり知りません。「Liefhertje en de Grote Witte Reus」ではデザイン、アート、グラフィック、服などを取り扱っていて、展示スペースもあり、コーヒーを飲んだり、雑誌を読んだりしてくつろげます。
ハーグの博物館には「Gemeentemuseum」があり、アートを楽しむには「Stroom」もおすすめです。

Text: Mariko Takei of unique tableware which could come alive at any moment. Familiar to the 2 cities, The Hague and Arnhem, Jorine shares us her insight into cities in The Netherlands.
Please introduce yourself.
Jorine Oosterhoff was born in The Hague (The Netherlands) in 1981. From childhood on I had a special fascination for fantastic surrealistic stories, together with animation, characters and ceramics, Fascinations that are here to stay.
I make frozen stories in objects, families of products, things that are unique.
In 2005 I graduated at the Academy of Art and Design Arnhem. My design studio JORINE was also found in 2005 and is currently based in Arnhem, The Netherlands.
Here I create my own projects as well as projects for clients.
The Netherlands is one of the leading countries for their developed product design including furniture, interior products. How do you think about design scene in the Netherlands?
Dutch design stands for clear, sober and logical products. Names as Droog, Marcel Wanders, Jurgen Bey, Gijs Bakker and others made this good name for Dutch Design. We as the younger generation benefit from this. For example we have very good education in art and design. Sometimes I notice the benefit of being a Dutch designer, people from foreign countries like it and it gives an immediate quality.
When you are in the business you don’t think about it so much, it just is as it is.
On the other hand, being a designer has becoming a popular occupation. More designers graduate every year worldwide, and with all this new coming designers it has become more difficult to get a famous name. It is not my goal, I want to do my thing and create nice products, that’s the main thing for me.
Could you tell us about your city both Den Haag and Arnhem? What do
you think about the cities?
I was born in The Hague, the political capital of holland near the dutch coast.. Also the work-palace of our queen Beatrix is in The Hague. My family moved to an other city when I was really young so I don’t remember a lot of The Hague. Some of my family still lives there, and also my grandparents used to live in The Hague. The city has really nice neighbourhoods with old and chique houses. I can remember my grandparents house very well, a large old Dutch mansion where I could play a lot of hide and seek with all my nephews and cousins.
Also Madurodam; a theme park with miniature dutch cities, parks with squirrels who to eat out of your hands, all memories from childhood. Really nice ones.
Now I live in Arnhem, a nice city in the east of The Netherlands with lots of green forest around it. We live near the centre of the city in a very green area, really quiet what I like a lot. A lot of birds in your garden, sometimes a hedgehog or frogs. It’s in the neighbourhood of the shopping centre, so we can walk into town.
Also if you are not in a shopping mood, you can take your bike and in a few minutes you are in the biggest nature park of Holland. I like it here a lot.
Could you discuss about Amsterdam? What do you think about the city?
Amsterdam is a vivid city. This is probably the reason why a lot of (Dutch) designers, artist etc move to Amsterdam to start up there business there. Understandable, Amsterdam can be nice and cosy. But also big and international important, musea, shops, openings, parties in abundance.
I really like the atmosphere in Amsterdam. The west of Holland looks different than the east. Going to the west means for me going back to my roots. This is how it feels when I go to The Hague, but also a little bit when I go to Amsterdam. It is really Dutch.
But moving to Amsterdam is not what attracts me. I like my green surroundings an the more quiet city of Arnhem.
Some good shops in Amsterdam are: Frozen Fountain (design), Droog (Dutch design). Puccini Bomboni (delicious chocolates)
Amsterdam has a lot of good museums. A good one is , nice exhibitions in art or design, graphic art etc. Right now most museums are closed because of rebuilding.
Proef Amsterdam is runned by fooddesigner Marije Vogelzang. She organizes food for parties like for your wedding or a business diner, very special/unique style. This she does at her workshop in Amsterdam. In Rotterdam she has a restaurant (called PICKNICK) where she serves breakfast and lunch, good taste, and good for the eye.
Please tell us about your favourite places in Arnhem and Haag.
In Arnhem we have some really good shops like: Jones (clothing), Coming Soon (design, books, clothing), Wim Pollmann (ceramics and glass), Subwalk (designer toys, (graphic-) books, clothing etc.) and some good initiatives like Tape, O.P.A., showroom Arnhem.
Some good restaurants are;
Look (Kastanjelaan 1, Arnhem) – Good biologic fish, meat and vegetarian dishes.
Het Eetatelier – A nice restaurant who serves biologic good vegetarian food, with a nice Dutch designed furnishing.
Enig Alternatief – Small restaurant with vegetarian and biologic dishes.
Zilli – Traditional Italian food.
These are all restaurants who serves also good vegetarian food (I am a vegetarian) and are not too expensive.
Some cafes with a nice atmosphere are:
Cafe Vrijdag (Velperbuitensingel 21 A, Arnhem) – This is where a lot of artists, designers etc come.
De Kroeg – Nice atmosphere, near to the river (Rijn), with a pool table and sometimes live music.
Metropole (Steenstraat 68, Arnhem) – Nice bar with a lot of space and a courtyard.
Roses – Comfortable, you can relax outside with a view over the river.
Also a good spot to relax is Sonsbeekpark (park). Here you can lay down in the grass, go for a walk in the forest… sometimes a festival.
The Hague: I do not really know the shopping area of The Hague. A great shop is Liefhertje en de Grote Witte Reus. They sell design, (graphic-) art, clothing etc. They have also an exhibition space. You can also relax here with a nice cup of coffee and read some magazines.
A good museum in The Hague is Gemeentemuseum. Also Stroom is a nice place to go for art.
