ターニング・トルソTurning Torso

Santiago Calatrava is recognized and award-winning Spanish architect born in Valencia. In connection with HSB Malmö’s former Managing Director Johnny Örbäck who asked him to design a residential buildingバレンシア出身のサンティアゴ・カラトラヴァは、受賞経験も持つ世界的に認められたスペイン人建築家である。HSBマルメの前任支配人、ジョニー・オルベックは彼に、ねじれた立方体型というアイデアを元に住居のためのビルを設計するように依頼し、2005年にターニング・トルソが完成した。
動物や人間の自然な動きに着想を得てカラトラヴァが設計したこのターニング・トルソは、彼の彫刻作品「ツイスティング・トルソ」が原型になっている。彫刻と建築の驚くべき融合が実を結んだのだ。またこの建物は世界で有数の、日常生活に密着したランドマークのひとつでもあり、10階分のオフィス用フロアの上に147世帯分の高級住宅、最上層の２フロアはミーティングのための空間になっている。完成当時はスカンジナビアで最も高い建物であった。
スウェーデンは、環境意識が非常に高い国である。新しく建てられる住居は全て、居住者が環境にやさしく生活ができるように設計される。ターニング・トルソでは、住居の全室にキッチン用のゴミ回収箱が設置され、有機ゴミが有効に活用できる。また、たくさんの共有施設があるので車の使用を減らすこともできる。建物は100％地域で生産された再生可能なエネルギーを供給している。もちろんこのエネルギーは効率的に使われなければならない。熱と水の消費量は各世帯ごとにモニタリングできるので、居住者は自分のエネルギーコストや環境への影響を管理する事ができる。
この建物からはマルメ市内を見渡す絶景が眺められる。オーレスン・リンクによってマルメとコペンハーゲンは海を超えて繋がっているため、ターニング・トルソはスウェーデンのみならずスカンジナビア南部を代表するアイコンでもあるのだ。

Translation: Shiori Saito based on the idea of a structure of twisting cubes, creates this building in year 2005. Calatrava is inspired by both animals and humans and their natural movements.
The vision of Turning Torso is based on a sculpture called Twisting Torso. The result is an amazing combination of sculpture and building. It is also one of the few landmarks in the world which becomes part of everyday life with its ten floors of offices, 147 luxury apartments and meeting facilities on the two top floors. Upon completion, it was the tallest building in Scandinavia.
Sweden is a truly “think green” nation. All the “new constructions” try to make it easier for the residents to be environmental friendly. In Turning Torso there is a kitchen waste disposal unit in every apartment for grinding organic waste. Also, the many shared facilities may lessen the need for car travel.
The building is supplied with 100% locally produced renewable energy. This energy should of course be used efficient. By monitoring heat and water consumption in each apartment residents can plan their own energy costs and thereby their impact on the environment.
The building brings a recognizable skyline for Malmö. It´s an icon not just for Sweden but also for south of Scandinavia, as Öresund Bridge which connects the cities of Malmö and Copenhagen over the water.
As Turning Torso is a private residential building there is no access for the general public.
